Why should social secuirty be privatized?

I personally think it should be especially for our age group because the "pool" of tax money will be gone by the time we are ready for retirement. Any other thoughts on this topic?

Because I don't want to have to pay for somebody's grandma to live 30 years past her due date because she's scared to die.

Also, because Social Security is an outdated system corrupted by certain major population fluxes that shifts the pay ratio between the average citizen and the seniors from 3:1 to about 1:3, which defeats the purpose.

as i understand it, we all pay into the system. the goverment spends that money, so in effect, when it comes time for us to use the money we set away, we are really using other people's money.  I don't want to type a paper, but there is plenty of lit out there on it.

Im saying there never should have been a social security system run by the government. Obviously, it hasn't had a great go of it so far, it's on the verge of bankruptcy. The shit we pay into it now, we will never see again, and it won't benefit us directly. Do you think it's ethical to take money from one person to pay it off to another?

taxes are a fact of life. however, in a perfect world i would like to see the government sustained on user fees. and other various forms of revenue collection. not income taxes. or at least a graduated income tax.

more often than not, the government takes money from that pool of social security funds and lends it to itself to pay for shit like roads, schools, hospitals, and even bs political schemes. They money isn't meant for that. We all get screwed because we won't get what our taxes promised us and all this time, cuts of our paychecks aren't being set aside for the purpose the social security tax is supposed to serve.

there is social security tax. its called FICA on your paycheck. everyone pays it and the govt and IRS is more strict about it than Fed witholding tax.

and regarding the OP. Social Security should be eliminated. its an outdated system that can no longer support its original purpose. at some point maybe the fed should consider creating a system that pays back to people over the age of 65 and a half but now is not the time. and SS should not be privatized. do you want the banks that just received billions in TARP money to be handling the nations SS for the next 50 - 100 years? another alternative would be a requirement for all workers to contribute to some sort of retirement. but thats another discussion.

it would be money taken out of your pay check. but instead of going to a big pool for everyone they are set aside for you when you retire. dumbfuck. called privatizing. same idea as taxing

Dont know what youre getting at with this.

Are pensions not things your workplace provides as a retirement fund? Im pretty sure they're not government run... So why is there social security on top of this?

Pensions are not 'government run', they may simply fund a pension the same way unions and other organizations do. Pensions are designed for non taxed income to be matched by a pre determined or contractual organization, and saved until retirement

interesting observation: on a site where the majority usually seems to lean left politically there is quite a bit of animosity towards social security, which is definitely a liberal policy.

that said i can't stand the idea that the government thinks they can save for my retirement better than i can; privatizing/making it optional would make me feel much better
