Bill O"Reilly may have a more reputable history of retardation, but Beck and Hannity are off the wall "No-hope-of-ever-returning-to-reality" conservative fanatics. Trust me, none of these guys are well-springs of intelligent thought, but Beck and Hannity are just fucking stupidity on cable.

different kind of books, totally different audience. As much as I hate twilight, it has been wildly successful and basically resuscitated and recreated the vampire genre. I still love the Victorian vamp archetype though. I just watched the movie "The Body Snatcher" on halloween and it had that whole English victorian feel to it. I'm getting to be obsessed with the genre, and I've gone as far as looking into buying a victorian topcoat haha.

What I find even more intriguing is that every pompous dimwit young leftist on this site uses Hannity and Beck to feel better about their own stupidity. Maybe just one time, resist your urge to try and encapsulate right wing politics around the opinions of fox news' opinion shows. Most of you fools get most of your news from the daily show anyway.

I have tried reading godless: the church of liberalism. It just blows my mind the distasteful look at life that woman has. I consider myself a pretty moderate positioned  individual but the amount of sheer polarity  in that book literally made me throw up in my own mouth. The fact that Ann Coulter could be defended is that of an embarrassment. Any scholarly individual will tell you that their work is laughable. Their books are completely derogatory and this is why they sell. It's the same reason "beef" records outsell good ones. Again, ratings and best sellers matter little in a country like ours.

Think about who watches network television news and buys these books and I will point out the majority that can't point out Panama on a map. Please stop using but they sell the most as a fact.

Let's see why they are national bestsellers. Who buys books anymore? Older generations. I buy books, lots of books, but I am a minority there. I can tell you the large audience of Ann, Beck, etc books are RELIGIOUS people. Mormons and evangelicals. I'm sorry but I can't take any of it seriously just as I cannot defend liberal conspiracy theorists. Unfortunately, extremely religious people make up a large portion of our population. I have nothing against any religion, but when megachurches preach the word of god and then people go to the store and buy these books from the store in THE SAME CHURCH they just went to, I want to turn the population upside down and spank the stupidity out of it.

Actually, that post was meant to illustrate how "wildly successful" books are not always relevant or quality. Bill O and Coulter may be bestsellers, but that sure doesn't mean that they are truthful, valid, or well written books. It just means they have a massively indulgent consumer base who don't care about quality or truth - a la Twihards.

STFU. Post something relevant instead of taking the elite agist approach.

hahah Daily show or radical left-wing blogs like MOVEON.org. There's a link to MSNBC there because Olberdoucher gets all his info from radical blogs.

I actually read Beck's newest book, pretty accessible to all kinds of people. No regular person wants to read something academic because frankly, they don't have the time or the patience. Political books outside of the academic field are written for the purpose of appealing to a mass audience. That's the difference between presses as well. If you want scholarly books, you look for shit put out by the Yale University Press or the Cambridge University Press. If you want popular works, look at Simon and Schuster or Random house or some shit like that. The way I see it, people buy the books either because they like the person, they hate the person, or they want to know what the person stands for. Judging by Beck and O'reilly's ratings, they have a pretty massive fanbase. The fact that they sold that many books just goes to support that even more. And it's not only "stupid" people who read them. Plenty of intelligent people read these books.

I'm with you there, O'Reilly more and more has an independent platform, and I enjoy his show even if I don't agree with everything. At least he doesn't appear to be pushing an agenda other than his own opinions.

On another note- if anybody else saw the full Daily Show last night, it was a good one. In particular the bit where they "inadvertently" compared the crumbling Soviet Union in 1989 (ie bad economy, over-extended war in Afghanistan, popular president who won Nobel Peace prize, etc) to the current day US. Kind of depressing parallels, but certainly partially true commentary.

The problem with the popular pundits is that they generate their ratings by be incredibly polarizing, which in turn rubs of in politics (or vice versa) and society. A lot of that discourse is not directly reflective of the majority of people's thoughts or opinions, but it just riles everybody up. We are going to have another civil war in this country if it doesn't stop on the path it's headed.

I like some of what he does when he has a liberal and a conservative person on his show. Like when he has Colmes (god, I feel so sorry for that guy, I actually like how he commentates on things even though he is a liberal) and he says two things and then watches everyone fight.

I wonder how many people in this thread have actually watched/listened to a full show from Rush, Glenn, Hannity, Levin or watched Fox News. I'm not talking watching/listening to little clips of the shows and having so called experts pick them apart, but actually listening to what they have to say and thinking about it. I mean I'm about as conservative as they come but I still watch Meet The Press, This Week, and a few other news shows that I have access to without cable. That is because I want to get both sides of the argument and get different opinions/perspectives on what is happening in the world. There is no such thing as completely unbiased news, so you need to get out and here both sides. And usually when I hear both sides I agree with the more conservative take 9 times out of 10. Just because you dislike someones viewpoint doesn't mean you have to hate them, just learn to respectfully disagree. Yelling that the other side should be shut down and taken off the air is about as anti-freedom as it gets.

I get Levin's podcast (his show from the day before), watch Anderson Cooper when I get the chance, I watch Bill O'Reilly's show, and usually will have CNN playing late at night just to listen to it while I work on homework or something.

I concur. The ultimate in close-mindedness it to just listen to whomever you agree with (preaches to the choir). With news, etc. I actually enjoy listening to opposite perspectives even more- it makes you think, and every so often I learn something too.

Normally I'd agree with this post, and it's all fine and good knowing that you listen to both sides and form your opinion that way, but you actually have to think about what conservatives are preaching before you preach to us about close-mindedness. Just because you're contradictory and enjoy what the right is all about doesn't necessarily mean it's right or good, especially in our country right now, when conservatism draws parallel more with radical fundamentalism than it does an actual political party.
