NEED computer HELP!

ok so i went to play a video in quicktime and it says that i needed some sort of software to play called xvid codec. so i downloaded it put it in the correct file so it would play but its still not working. Any help is appreciated to helping me fix the problem +K. i have a mac also if that heps

VLC is a free video player that will handle most file types and codecs.

this. download vlc and you can play everything with one program.
