Movies that were great but could have been epic.

I figured this could be a good idea for a thread. (I know theres a media arts forum, but nobody posts there so whatever, this could bring some non-retarded discussion to NSG). Maybe post ideas on how the movie could've been made better.


I nominate Sunshine. Thought it was a really good movie, just watched it again tonight. It had potential to be a sci-fi classic, but it got turned into Hollywood crap about halfway through (although there were amazing moments throughout.) Definitely recommend it if you havent seen it.


**Spoiler Alert**

1. Ditch some of the stereotype behaviors. They kinda had the whole, quiet guy who saves the day, douchebag, douchebag whos actually legit, legit guy who sacrifices himself etc. etc. I thought they could have been a bit more subtle with the whole character development, and also focus much more on it.

2. Ditch the whole retarded slasher-flick thing towards the end. I liked the twist, but they could have made it more metaphorical or just kinda a psychological thing that was going on. They did a great job of setting up the whole effects of light and seeing the sun on the psychology dude and the captain before he died, but didnt delve into it much more with other crew members.

3. Soundtrack. Could have used more silence and more epic post-rock than the usual string-symphony stuff for the epic scenes. I dont know a better movie to have "God is an Astronaut' in the soundtrack for.



Anyways, thats about it... i doubt many people will respond to this but whatever, had to get it off my chest because its frustrating how good of a movie Sunshine could have been.

A movie where because of global warming the earth is fucked so a team of astronauts is going to go to the sun to put up a giant mirror to reflect some of the light and save earth and then they run into another team that was supposed to do it first and supposedly died but one guy is still alive and shit goes down.

Also, I think that the movie Hot Rod was great, but could have been epic (like a Zoolander or Step Brothers type of epic) I don't know how they should have changed it exactly, because epic is an art not a science. But i feel like that movie was on the edge of just being incredible

I thought the movie Troy sucked ass (but I was mildly entertained to some degree), but a solid theatrical release on something like the illiad or odyssey could be extremely badass, but alas, this was not. It could really give credence to the word "epic"

alexander tried to be epic, but it was shitty. i practically forgot i saw that movie until I saw this thread.

public enemies, the bank robbing one. could have been so amazingly badass, but they focused on the wrong areas(love interest) for wayyy to long. had that movie actually been about robing banks, and fucking bitches it would have been amazing. but it sucked cock.

You basically described the exact opposite of the situation. The sun was dying and their ship was going to set off some sort of bomb thing that would restart it or something like that. The 'mirror' was simply the shield their ship had in order to stop it from getting raped by the sun.

idk if i'm crazy but i feel like equilibrium could have outdone the matrix (both released the same year) if it had a larger budget. that movie was so great but could have been epic

I personally think equilibrium outdid the matrix, but thats because its a more realistic storyline; like i could actually see that happening in the future. theres a lot of symbolism in there too if you look that pretty much screams nazi regime. idk, me and my friends thought it was pretty epic. sadly hardly anyones seen it though.

stipes .. it was a great comdey. The first half was absutly halirous with guys in boot camp. but then it seemed like the were Oh Shit we only have half a movie and finished with a wicked corny rescue mission in a armored motor home

Haha, you just called equilibrium realistic.  Maybe its personal brand of dystopia is a little more relatable, but gun katas?  Seriously?  Great movie though.


Sunshine is amazing too.  I agree with Mr. OP that it fell apart towards the end, but there were some great scenes.  Like when Icarus is talking about not having enough air for five crew members when there should only be four.  Saw that high in theaters and jumped.

nah. that shit was pure quality.

then again, i didnt read shit about it, didn't read reviews, didnt see a trailer, etc, so it was nice and fresh when i watched it an imax theater.

completely disagree about hot rod...honestly, that movie was genius.

and whoever said dark knight, i definitely thought it lived up to all the hype.

i do agree with sunshine, though, and war of the worlds. thought they were going to be better.

No actually it was not the greatest movie ever.. It had the greatest portrayal of the Joker, however the rest of the movie was sub par at best.. The new batman movies make batman look like a rich idiot. When in fact batmans "superpower" is how smart he is. Alas I stray from the subject..

To op,

I feel like all the Harry Potter movies were good but could have been done so much better. Like sticking to the books plot more in a few of the movies, adding more quidditch (I would have especially liked to have seen the world cup game in the fourth movie) There are a lot of things that if done right could have made the Potter movies so much better than they are.

i mean i enjoyed both movies a lot but i def see where you're going with that. all my friends loved it too.  and by "outdone" i simply meant that the quality of the cinematography and such. i feel way more people should have seen it
