Computer to tv help.

I just got netflix and i have been watching online movies. Now iv got all the right cables connecting the beasts but the only thing that shows on the tv is my blank desktop image. Is there a setting on the computer that i need to change for a video out format? Thanks a bunch.

p.s. its a mac book pro. i think the second to last edition.

when you hook it up and see the blank desktop, try moving a window into across the screen into the external monitor
