Amplid Antidogma Base problem

So basically I bought these 08/09 skis brand new a month ago in a sale. since then I have waxed and hot scraped them to take off the factory wax and now I'm on my third layer of wax (of six I'm planning to put on) before they touch snow. My problem is the black parts on the base, when heated is running. I drip wax on, and heat it into the base (just like mrstskier does in his waxing video) then as the wax heats up under the iron the black part starts to run.  After its cooled it scrapes off along with the rest of the wax. Is this something to worry about? or normal on new skis?  thanks

It doesn't look that bad in the picture because of the light - but every time I wax I end up scraping off a lot of it

I have never heard of this before. I'd PM Amplid or Email them and ask what's up, they'd know better than anyone.

you dont need 6 coats of wax dude, there new so it doesnt really apply, but when you wax use cheep all temp wax for a hot scrape to take all the dirt particals out of the base and open up the pores, then use some better wax targed towards the temperature of the snow you will be on and youll be good to go

um, whats the ski binding/maintenance thread? and who says you need six coats of wax? the ski is not going to hold as much wax as you put on it. the amount of wax you put on the ski is MORE then enough to fill the fully opened pores. the other 5 coats will just be stupid...

thats what I'm thinking but I'm applying wax at 120-130 centigrade, and I'm not leaving the iron over one area for too long because i put my hand underneath the ski and its still cool. It happens just as I heat the wax into the ski.

Haven't seen this before... Do you use any base cleaner prior to waxing? It could be dirt or grease (if you ride on man-made snow) rising through the wax as it's heated.

Doubtful this issue will decrease the performance of the ski. If it continues drop us a pm.

Well if you're letting the iron stay in one place without any movement, then it will burn the base.  I wasn't sure if you were saying that..but you should be always slowly moving the iron along the ski.  Also if you're not using enough wax that MIGHT make it burn easier.  just an idea, I've burned a bit of a base once from both of those.

No base cleaner because these havent touched snow yet - they dont even have bindings fitted yet.

I was using -  SWIX CH6 (blue -6 to -12 centigrade) ironing temp = 140 centigrade
                   - and Swix CH8 (red +1 to -4 centigrade) ironing temp = 120 centigrade

yeh you misunderstood i am always keeping the iron moving but the black part always seems to smear on to the white parts of the base, but scrapes off after with the rest off the wax.

Also I thought I have been dripping enough wax on covering the whole base in a diagonal movement the full width of the base all the way down the ski. - if that makes sense.


I'm going to do another wax tommorrow, iron at 120 centigrade and put on loads of wax to see if iFail is right about not enough wax, cheers guys for your input by the way

upon further research its a graphite sintered  base so i think what you are seeing is the black graphite from the base pulling into the white part, shouldn't be a problem, hope that helps

UPDATE

so i've done another wax with swix blue just now and the problem has stopped

I put on an extra 3rd more wax than I usually use and I moved the iron quicker across the base on a temp of 130 centigrade.

I was melting cold wax on so I timed how long I moved the iron the full length of the ski (181 antidogma). It took exactly 1 minute. that was approx 20 seconds faster than I usually do. I couldn't go any quicker otherwise the wax wouldn't melt properly.

I think the problem was that a mixture of not enough wax and moving the iron not quickly enough.
The bases never bubbled or the underneath of the ski never felt too hot, so I don't think I have done any lasting damage.
