Beginner Shots... Input?

DOF on the first one is nice, the others lack any sort of subject though..

Yes, Train tracks. Everyone takes pictures of train tracks when learning.

any suggestions on how to compose the subject better?

Add a subject, take a friend with you, preferably a girl for obvious reasons (ooooh, look at how big your lens is......)  and get them to just chill and take photos of them.....

The photos just need a reason to be taken, at the moment they are pointless snapshots.....  Not hating, just crit :)

The best advice I got as a beginner was to go slow, really slow. Take care with your composition, lighting effects, depth of field, shutter speed and make sure you have everything absolutely perfect before you snap a shot. Otherwise beginners tend to take a plethora of "snap-shots" versus a handful of photographs and rob themselves of the learning experience. At this point, subject matter is something you should consider but it shouldn't be your primary focus quite yet as you need to build up your skills. Take a shot that is just about the light, or just about the texture, or just about depth of field, and learn how things you compose in the lens will look as photographs. That way, when your inspiration (subject matter) strikes you'll have the skills to capture it the way you want. Somebody older, smarter, and more talented than me once said "Your first ten thousand photos will be you worst." So work hard, don't get frustrated, and enjoy your time behind the lens. Yeah man, try for a while in manual exposure, It'll help you understand how the camera works.

When you get it, you can take a step back and use aperture priority...

in terms of the last one, work with the pattern, or get closer.
