In refresh Duncan Adams says mammoth is probably the mecca of freeskiing. in every day is a saturday Abma reckons it's alaska

When Adams said Mammoth I think he was implying the park scene. Mammoth has been pushing the park skiing and snowboarding scene since its beginnings. When Abma said Alaska he was talking more along the lines of a mecca of the best big mountain skiing that everyone who loves skiing should get a chance to ski in their life time. So either can be a mecca depending on what you are into.

big mtn: chamonix, alaska, verbier, las lenas

park: snowpark nz, mammoth, summit county, laax

pow: alta, jackson, japan

all-around: whistler, tignes/val d'isere, tahoe

skiing means many things to many people. there is no one mecca. thank god.

^ exactly. u really cant compare alaska and momoth, because they r both mecca. but their mecca in different styles of skiing.

Mammoth used to be the mecca of park skiing between 1999-2003 (and I think that's probably what Duncan was referring to). Mammoth was the place to be if you rode park. I suggest some of you try to find a way to see the movie Scandalous! because the movie really documented the heart of this scene.

Oh how things have changed though. It seems like a lot of riders have realized that Mamm's lack of accessibility is a big problem if you are trying to maintain in the competitive scene without spending all your money flying/driving everywhere. From what I've seen the Montage kids are really some of the only skiers that hold it down in the parks out there these days, but they aren't really doing many comps. Breck and Keystone have become what Mamm used to be for park riding. Although neither mountain will ever touch Mamm's insanely sick terrain.

As far as big mountain in North America, Alaska is THE mecca. Jackson is obviously a contender as well but its clearly not on the level of AK.

Arguably, Mt Hood / Portland. I wonder if anybody has actually done a count of the photos in the magazines to see which locations are most represented.

There are pros all over the world, BC, UT, CO, CA, Europe, Asia. . . but somehow, everyone makes it to Hood in the summertime. So it's a bit like the Mecca of skiing, and they perform the Hajj, if you get my drift.

hood is obviously the mecca of glacier skiing but that is another category entirely.

True, but Hood and Whistler are about equal in my opinion as far as their past. Both have incredible history. It was really cool this summer to get a chance to visit both. I went to Hood last summer so it was cool to see spots where jumps from old Mack Dawg and PBP movies had been built. This summer I got to visit Whistler for my first time, it was pretty crazy to see where the legendary High North QP/hip was built and to see where so much of 13 was shot. Even just walking around the Whistler village I was getting flashes in my head from old ski and snowboard flicks.

whistler is pretty big mountain, the resort lines aren't as huge as alaska or chamonix but there are def some backcountry lines that are some of the biggest non-Alaska
