alright so this is my opinion, and i feel im right. T-pain and Akon are taking over the industry. I mean listen to them its NUTS, i could never imagine when i was a lad, people hitting the notes they hit. Its almost inhuman of them.

me and skodeo were just talking about this on pms and he agrees.

They may be taking over the mainsteem industry but we still underground stuff. I stopped listening to the radio a long time ago so im not to worried.

I guess that's true, but to me thats not what "rap" is about. It has nothing to do with what notes people can hit, it's what they rap about, their flow stuff like that.

How can the same people who sell bootlegs of my catalog try to stop me from selling a simple mix CD to celebrate vinyl? That's why Hip Hop is dead and Rap music can go to hell as far as I am forever concerned.

I think sometimes people get too caught up listening to certain music and don't ever give rap/country/rock/electronic/whatever a chance, without really exploring their options for listening within that genre. Either way its good music, not necessarily my favourite, and I'm not even listening to anything mainstream for rap/hip-hop, but there is certainly some good stuff out there, and being a musician myself I can safely say it is tough to put together a banger track, not matter what genre.

Besides, music has degraded in complexity and form over the past 400 years or so, way back in the day when Bach was writing music it was ridiculously complex and super hard to write, which is partly what makes it so amazing to listen to - there is so much to hear and so much to appreciate. Since then its gotten really basic. Take for example Champagne Supernova - its simply the same chord with a moving 7th or something like that (learned it from tab on guitar, I'm assuming thats how it works, but simple either way). Incredibly successful but also incredibly simple. And while there is something to be said for how awesome music like that is, it is also about as complex as a lot of rap/hip-hop music. You really can't call rap shitty music unless you're a purist in classical or contemporary music. Or jazz. Or modern music. I think you get the point.

Unless its not the chord progressions and complexity of the music which makes it shitty music to you, if that's your opinion I respect it but highly suggest you give it a chance before bashing it.

Unneeded. I think that 2% of rap is good. Cunninlynguists, Atmosphere, etc. But what he's talking about (akon, tpain) SUCKS. Not just in a musical sense (complexity, cliche, melody), but also in the sense that it isn't even entertaining to listen to. And this coming from someone who listens to beyonce and lady Gaga. Yeah, you can argue that music in and of itself cannot be bad, but I will argue that most of rap, and even the artists I listed above, are guilty of being cliche, repetitive, uninspired, and mechanical. I'm not close-minded to any one genre (except late 80's surfer punk), or a purist of any one genre, but you have to admit that this shit isn't good and our standards have fallen. We've come from the Beatles and the Stones to Hendrix to Pink Floyd and (ugh) Led Zeppelin, and then the 80's (enough said), and then Nirvana and Jeff Buckley, to this. It's sad, and it's amazing how low we've fallen as a society when you see how we call this stuff "good" in the context of musical history as a whole.

And don't give me that "Oh, but wyatt, there are so many great Indie bands out there." Stop it. 99% of indie bands will never be heard from again after they put out their 2 shitty albums with their 4 good songs total that only sound good because they're better than the crap on the radio, which isn't saying much. Hell, even Animal Collective only has a handful of good songs; like 5 at the most. The Smiths? Like 5 good songs.

It may be a cut above the rest, but that's not saying much about the band, unfortunately. That's saying something about the industry.

Music has "degraded" because simpler chord progressions/melodies are more catchy because they're easier for a non-musically trained person to process and remember them. This is the reason why this type of musical structure is so successful, because it is the most marketable. Profit has a lot to do with how many people can hear/remember a song or artist, and a majority of any given populous consists of people without musical training.

I've always been a huge fan of complex music, but I feel even simple music must be complex in structure for it to sound pleasant. (By "simple" I really mean minimalist, which is far from whatever shit they're playing on the radio). Take for instance Pink Floyd. Many people would call their music "simple" because each measure doesn't sound convoluted or intricate. In terms of the simple presence of notes, yes, they are incredibly simple. David Gilmour doesn't shred the guitar like Yngwie Malmsteen, but he doesn't have to. He is able to make up for that by being unbelievably intricate, both compositionally and dynamically. Instead of playing boring chords all the time (A major/minor, B major/minor, C major/minor, etc.) they will modify various jazz/blues chords to create ones that are more dissonant, atmospheric, or spacey, all without sounding any more "complex" to the average listener because they keep things slow. In short, the number of notes in a song does not directly correlate to the complexity of the song.

And I hate to sound elitist, but anything with a pop construction I tend to feel bitter towards. Even a song like Wonderwall by Oasis I can never take seriously because it has that same bullshit pattern: verse, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, etc. I have always felt that the reason why I've never been able to like many acclaimed bands is mostly because of this. I don't want to hear some stupid "meaningful" lyrics, or a blazing fast solo. I want to hear music that is well written and produced. Not four open chords being played repeatedly while some jerkoff sings about their feelings.

This applies to all musical genres. I hate rap/country/reggae just as much as the next guy, but even those genres can have amazing music as long as it's written well.

I do agree that the stuff he is referring to sucks in comparison to a good portion of the genre, wasn't trying to defend it, just expressing a viewpoint of mine which was not necessarily directed at any one person, didn't mean to accuse you of anything, sorry if I came off that way. And yes, my post was probably unnecessary, but I thought I'd try to get something good out of this terrible thread lol.

As for admitting that this isn't good and that our standards have fallen, that is something I am entirely trying to get at, but it may have been lost in my disorganized rant lol, I definitely agree with you there.

I can't let the Pink Floyd comment pass though, I honestly believe they were on a musical level for complexity and quality that was shared by the Beatles and Stones (their early stuff is amazing), and their best work was released in their early days, throughout the '60s and '70s, around the same time period as when the beatles were starting out. I don't mean to demean either the Beatles, the Stones, or Floyd, I'm just too much of a Pink Floyd fanboy to let that pass hahaha.

I am definitely not a huge fan of indie as a genre, I personally think that a lot of the best bands are coming out of europe with electronica and such right now (see m83, royksopp, those are the ones that are coming to mind). I don't even listen to Animal Collective, but I do like a few of their songs.

As for your final sentence, I think that despite our slight disagreements, that is the essence of both our posts', and the most important place for us to agree.

getting hung up on auto tune (or any sort of music stuff) is silly.

Flesh Canoe, Purple Bottle, In the Flowers, My Girls, Summertime Clothes, Peacebone, Lion in a Coma Water Curses, Winters Love etc. etc...  And im not even that much of an Animal Collective fanboy...
