Ugh after effects has got the best of me.

Im trying to reproduce this dvd menu in after effect as practice. For the life of me I can't seem to get it right. There using trapcode particular I'm assuming. The problem im having is my particles dont look like that at all... is it a custom layer particle? how do they make it go around the video? iI thought your supposed to use this shit in 2-d? anyone got any ideas?
