How can I convince my dad to let me buy this car.

First off, I want to buy this 1991 Mk2 GTI that this guy is selling. It is in MINT shape to say the least. It has 92k miles on it. We just got home from checking out the car and we drove it around. The owner has done a lot to this car and one thing is a VERY stiff suspension. He seems to be stuck on the fact that it'll handle like shit in the winter (which I know it will, but only on the shitty roads), and that I'll get sick of bouncing over every bump (LOTS of these in Maine). From what I can tell he seems sort of 50/50 on it. I am in love with this car and I've always wanted a mk2 gti. I've had a few friends that have had these and that's really what made me want one; they're just so fun. Basically I'm stumped on how to get him 100 percent convinced to let me get this car. After all, he's the one fronting me most of the money for it. He knows I'll pay him off in a quick manner so that's not the issue.

Sparknotes: I want this car that my dad thinks I will hate in a few months. Which I may but it's too fun of a car to care. How can I convince him to help me buy it.

my integra had the stiffest suspension i have ever felt in my life (full race coilovers- stiffest springrate) and you get used to it, i had fun dodging potholes and avoiding roadkill that would destroy my bumper. it was actually better than my subaru in snow conditions unless it was alot of snow (it would build up under the body and lift the front tires off the ground lmao (i had blizzacs though)

do it, having a car that handles like a dream as a first car made me a better driver. i say go for it. if you get sick of it, you can always trade it for something of equal value

Are you willing to work on it or learn to work on it?  My bro has a mk2 gti and a mk1 jetta and he is always tinkering with them.  Not that they aren't great cars, but if you want them to run well they take a bit of work.

get something more reliable and practical. It will be "mint" until you hit your first pothole and bam, there goes your axels, control arms, tie-rods ETC.  Take it from me, I have an a4 w/ rigged ass sport suspension and it's a major pita...expensive one too, cost me about $2000 to fix the control arms tie rods and front axel

I've built a few from the ground up and ill tell you MK2's are super easy to fix so don't listen to these clowns on that front. you wont "blow your axles out" if you hit a pothole. New springs are cheap and take a couple hours to put on, if you REALLY don't like the stiff spring rate change em,stupid reason not to buy a nice Mk2. they're going extinct. Is it an 8v or 16v and how much is it?

dude dont get a v-dub. especially in maine. where are the skis going to go? where's all your gear going? get a wagon and throw a rack on top. but for the other 6 months of the year it would be dirty.

I always wanted a pimppp ass car with 20 inch rims and all that shit so I did one up. And now its just a whatever. You don't even think of it anymore, and yuo more or less think how it was a waste to spend so much on some stereos and rims and other mods because you could use to scrilla for lift tickets now.

Never ever ever EVER buy a car that is already modded.  In 1/10 cases it might work out for you, in the other 9/10 cases you have NO IDEA how it will perform.  92k miles on a modded car?  You are asking for trouble.  How do you know the guy didn't go out and drag it every weekend?  Keep looking, believe me.

I am keeping my options open, but i've always wanted a mk2 gti and now may be my only chance to own one. I have more than half the money saved up, my dad just made a deal with me that if i got straight A's he'd buy me a car (within reason). I've told him that I'll pay him back 100% but he's stuck on the fact that it has a stiff suspension THAT'S ALL. I just can't get him around that fact.

Doesn't matter it is modded.  Don't get it, you can find another one.  9/10 of the time it will only lead to massive problems especially at that mileage.  I have seen it happen over and over again.

I would say try and find a stock, or close to stock GTI, most of these other guys are right with the part about you don't know how its been driven.
My only example is one of my good friends family is into modding their VW's. He has a 01 wolfsburg with like 15g's worth of APR tuning in the suspension and some in the motor, and his dad has a 25th aniversary GTI thats APR Stage 2 and his mom has a slightly modded 08' GTI R32 and they drive them all pretty hard. chances are, if its been modded, its been ripped on, on the road.

I'm not doubting this was driven hard. When I drove it the guy let me open it up and it's fast to say the least...=) I know i would drive it hard if I get it.

Don't do it engine is chipped and has been rebuilt or at least the heads, and you don't know by who.  If he rebuilt the engine then you have no idea if it was done correctly or if it will last.

No front sway bar?  That is retarded for street driving, so dumb.  All it is doing is damaging the suspension.  Definitely stay away from this car in my opinion.

this guy has owned the car for 4 years and only put 15k miles on it. He doesn't have to set it up for street driving. I'm fully prepared to do so though.

man i would not waste 3grand on that car! buy a old vdub from a some grandma then mod it yourself. that car i would not trust. plus ground control coils are ok, they are bouncy as fuck and ride like shit for daily driving, i had them on my teggy for two months. my car would literally bounce. dont do it that car is poorly put together, and hes trying to get rid of it before something else breaks IMO...

Yep exactly.

4 years and only put 15k on it?  Probably cause he was tracking it or something similar.  Even worse for a car you are trying to reconvert to street.  Definitely do not go for this one, keep looking.

yeah man, if a car isnt set up for street, its set up for track. whether thats auto-x or circuit racing, or drag. it beats the living piss out of your car. i auto-xed my integra, and would take it to nelsons ledges. that car had mad problems and turned out to be a money pit for me, so i sold it after my second motor blew. AND i built that car from the ground up myself and still had issues, and it was a honda...
