Jeep Cherokee Sport

When did the CEL (Check Engine Light) come on? Were you just driving?  Was the car acting normal?  I don't know much about Jeeps so I don't know how you check the codes, whether it be odometer trick or whatever.  The one thing you can do is take it to Autozone or similar tomorrow and tell them you want your CEL checked, they will take an OBD2 reader and read your code to you as well as what it means.

Its a Jeep. Trust me, you'll never find the problem.

yo my check engine light has been on basically since i bought my 98 cherokee. its probably just a O2 sensor. how many miles are on it and whens the last time you changed your sensors?

and ill agree with the previous post, drive it to autozone or something, and have them read the code. i wouldnt worry about your jeep stranding you, that only happens when your off road haha.

If it just came on when you turned your car on it probably isn't a misfire or anything like that, though it is possible.  Did you try and drive it at all when you the CEL came on?  Did you idle it at all, how did it idle?

It is most likely a sensor or something like that.  I dunno about Jeeps but O2 sensors can be mad expensive if that is the problem, and it is something that needs to be fixed.  I don't know if this will work or not but you can try disconnecting the negative terminal of your battery and then get in your car and hold your brakes for like 30 seconds.  This will completely drain everything of power.  Reconnect your batter and start your car up again, see if you still have the CEL.

Being a previous Jeep owner, Id say take it to autozone and have them pull the codes. Its free and then you can tell us what the problem is. Chances are its an O2 sensor if the Jeep is still running and acting normal.

I drove it around the campus, I'm at college, and it was fine. I think I'm going to drive it to the nearest Autozone tonight, just see where it is, and see how the Jeep runs. Then just bring the Jeep in tomorrow and see what Autozone has to say.

You could do it with a pliers...but anyways good luck, let us know what you hear tomorrow.

It could also be that you need an oil change. Sometime happens with somw jeeps

Gotta 99 Cherokee Sport as well, had the same problem about 3 months ago, changed the O2 sensor and it was wine.
