Finally watched L1P Refresh and realized...

Shanghai Six and Long Story Short definitely changed everything for me. Especially S6. I mean, I love all of L1's movies, don't get me wrong..but those two will always be my favorites.

Refresh was banger, I have found that during the last two weeks ive probly watched Delorme and Hornbeck's segments 43908453 times, the music combined with the riding is perfect

There weren't as many dresses in Shanghai Six.  Everybody's got their own style and I'm cool with that and the level of riding is pretty nuts in Refresh, but I still like the S6 better.

the leaps from propaganda to happy dayz to 1242 were insane.

the leap from 1242 to all movies released this year is nonexistent and arguably backward.

^ yeah the other thing back in those days is you weren't really exposed to any skiing throughout the course of the year. now with youtube, JOSS superunknown, KOS and the millions of other edits we see all year long we see so many locations/tricks/shots long before the movie ever comes out.

 Editing, skiing, and control are on a whole 'nother level compared to 1242. Sick movie for its time, but were in the middle of something amazing right now.

 The level of difficulty in shit being thrown these days is crazy, progression wise we are where snowboarding was like 15 years ago.

 Trust me, this is a good thing. It isn't that whole we are behind the times argument, just where the amount of things being invented is going crazy right now.

 I like this years stuff way better than any of the movies you mentioned... cept maybe happy dayz, it just was so happy. Refresh has some heart to it, its nice to see someone hand the torch down to the next generation. Kudos level1, best movie yet.

the internet is precisely what's made ski movies less interesting for me. i'm in the same boat as a few here, i've been skiing for 22 years (i'm now 25) and i've been finding random shit to jump off of, bonk, slide, whatever for the majority of that time. i first got into the whole freeride thing when i worked in the rental shop at my local hill and got a pair of the bright blue 1080s the year after the yellow ones came out. started getting into park more, got a job at my local family-run sporting goods store the next summer in the skate shop, and one of the dudes who worked in the skate shop with me skied too, so we'd just chill and watch 13 and the game pretty much every day we worked. i borrowed the game, copied the vhs (sorry pbp) and watched that movie so many times the tape wouldnt even play anymore. the next movie that really had that same effect was forward with crichton's segment. the urban stuff he was doing in that was so ahead of everyone else. now having new edits to watch pretty much every night throughout ski season, and instant media coverage, ski films just don't have the same impact for me. yeah, henrik's double cork whatever in refresh was sick, i'm sure it's super hard to do and i'll never do one, but how many times did we see that trick in edits from hood over the summer? when chrichton stomped the cab 10 in forward, when you saw that movie for the first time, that was the first you were seeing that trick. ski movies now just don't have that.

I think you are confusing Pep in 1242 with the whole of 1242 the movie. Yes, Pep's part set a high bar far ahead of it's time, I think few people will disagree that it could serve in a feature movie today and be just as inspiring, powerful, and "progressive". However if you really think 1242 was the high water mark for ski movies I will have to disagree with you there. Look at the big mtn, especially Tanner, compared to what we're seeing now, as well as urban, park, and general riding and style, etc. Sure that was an amazing time in skiing, but I don't think the ski movie genre is still stuck in 2003.

Big spins to switch in the bc... doubles to switch in the bc... swaps on everything... park shoots need to take a rest I think, but theyre still fun to watch. All of the urban this year is just like 10 levels above what it was even last year.. more guys doin it too. The wild stallions movie was nice with that, even whats in edis was super nice.

 We always look at the past and think it is better, I watch those 'older' movies all the time and think how rad it is that we have come so far. When the OG's of your sport are still mostly in their0's... I think we have a long way to go and things are going to get crazier.

 Rage always makes films like that, but it doesn't make it a bad movie, I liked pretty good a lot. Minus the lack of no name euro's it reminded me a lot of Junkshow Diaries, which I think is a super slept on movie. My fave movie of all time, but I dont think it compares at all to what is happening today. I just like it cause it was super fun and tanner hall farts stars in it.

 I think going forward the only thing I would like to see is some more raw footage, it doesnt have to be all glossy. MOre crews going out and making it happen. There are still only  a handful of good movies every year. Shit I have seen like 20 premiers for snowboard flics this year, and all of them have been sick. Some different music would be nice... been let down a little bit that way, lots of yawner parts that could have been better with some better music. But thats just my opinion on it.

 The movies are rad, and Ive said it before... If you don't like it, dont buy it, and go out and try to make it yourself.

 I am old and am starting to suck at skiing, so watching new people come out and crush it, especially in the last few seasons is just sick to see. And IMO the movies just keep gettin better.

i agree 100% but a movie that does that only comes around once every few years.  Its hard to compare apples to grapefruits.

I haven't seen either, and I was still a blue jeans and starter jacket wearing gaper on rentals when Shanghai Six came out. I tend to prefer short edits to full length movies. I think the shorts lend themselves to being a concise picture of the skiing and are not as draining to watch as a long movie. Also, Berman made some tight edits during the Long Story Short Period though. I.E.:

your mention of the crichton sw 10 really brought me back to when I first saw that. When he was at sw 7 and he had tonnes of air left and just spun that other 3 and it just blew your mind cause it was so fresh.
