Nine Reasons why Bad Grades Don't Matter

I'm doing pretty roughly in 2 courses (Chinese, and math) and i was just looking on the internet for a little background knowledge on grading, and the importance of grades. I do not believe that grades don't matter, but i do believe they are less consequential than we think they are.

I found it very informative, and it made me quite upset about some aspects of the educational system.

However, this isn't saying that you should drop out of school, simply pointing out that you can be successful and be a drop-out.

I would also like to say that Apple Computing revolutionized the computer industry, both by inventing the visual desktop we use today and the mouse, while microsoft was stuck with a keyboard and MS-DOS. Early macs also had export issues because at the time there were very tight export laws on supercomputers, and macs passed the tests to be included in that category. Seriously though, computations to be done in science? I can't think of something remotely close to complicated enough that a mac couldn't handle it. Besides, do you think a comparable PC is what anyone uses? The standard at NASA is linux, not windows, not mac.

this isn't 9 reasons grades don't matter it's 9 reasons the grading systems are flawed, but they will always matter.

(i didnt read the whole thread sorry if someone said this already)

this makes me feel better cause i have two papers due friday and i haven't started either one. so im pretty much screwed but i did just get the best gpa ive ever gotten in a quarter. 3.6 baby YA

to bad there isn't any evidence substantial enough for the argument. Learning itself is objective, teachers lives are what create bull shit or awesomness in the system.

That article was absolutely horribly written, raised no pertinent points, and was more of a critique of the grading system than of grades themselves. Grades do matter. Sure, after school they may not, in and of themselves, count for anything. They are, however, a means to an end. Good grades in high school get you into better colleges, which allow you access to better grad schools, to better careers. The argument raised here carries no weight and is simply false. It may be true, in certain circumstances, that grades may not have added to or detracted from people's successes, but these individuals are the exception to the rule.

The problem I have with this article, is that it takes the responsibility of learning away from the student.  How well you do in a class is entirely up to you and no one else.  If you are willing to put forth the effort to learn the material, then you will do well.  If you do badly in the class, chances are you either didn't learn the material, or you studied the wrong material.  For the most part it's pretty easy to do well, but every now and then a class can suck ass.  One bad grade won't really hurt you that bad.

i agree with you, i think everyone in school needs to make sure they are learning and work, but i believe that the article also raises good points on how that work might not necessarily pay off.
