Just got the red ring on my xbox

So exactly a week before modern warfare 2 comes out my xbox decides to shit itself after 2+ years. Any other time I would be cool with waiting 2-3 weeks for the repair, HOWEVER that's not an option right now. My xbox still has the warranty so I can send it in for free and get it fixed. This leaves me with two realistic options:

1) Send my xbox in and buy a new one at walmart or wherever for $250. When I get the fixed xbox I can just sell it online for $200ish. This will leave me with a brand new xbox with 3 year warranty for a little over $50.

2) Just fix it myself. I looked up guides online and it's pretty easy to do (I work a lot with electronics so I know my shit). I'm pretty confident I could do it with no problems. I fix pretty everything by myself, however a free warranty is obviously the safe choice.

What have other people done? I've heard stories of people buying xboxes and then returning them when they get theirs back, where can you return an xbox you used for a month (if I felt inclined to do such a thing)

and to the OP, idk but you sound pretty confident in your fixing skills. if its not too bad to do that way, id try it out. i dont know about you but in my opinion selling things online is a pain in the ass

I'm good thank you very much.

Money's not too much an issue so I might just buy an elite and then sell the refurbished one when I get it. I think it might be kinda fun to open my xbox up and fix it myself but its gonna cost at least $20 for all the tools and parts. No guarantee that it's a heat sink failure either.

Don't they just give you a brand new one with the red ring?

And i guess if money isn't an issue the send it, i think you can take shit back to walmart for at least 30 days or try to find a place that has a longer return policy.

well usually they just give you a refurbished xbox aka one that got the red ring and some hack took it apart and fixed it. Not sure what they do to fix it but I'd probably rather do it myself then send it in.

ok, im modding my xbox right now. so i took it apart. if your really careful, you might be able to. you have to take a sticker off that connects the two plates together. that you need to use a blow dryer for to take off. next, in the back, when you have to push buttons to open it, make sure not to mess any plastic up. otherwise, if you do that correct you should be fine. i fixed my red rings by lookin at youtube tutorials.

OR... if you want to stick with your shitty xbox, my friend wraps in in a blanket and purposefully over heats it which somehow fixes shit for awhile...

I would just go get a game system that wasn't sold with a part they knew would break.

I really didn't want to start a war over the PS3 vs Xbox fight but to be completely honest, the fact that this is STILL happening so many years after it first started is something to be worried about is all I am saying.

theres a reason u can install games to ur harddrive... it stops the game from needing to be spun in the xbox, hence stopping the heat buildup for red rings

there are like 18 hours of time to do stuff per day, what makes you think playing video games and doing other stuff are mutually exclusive?

no i dont think you can do that with games like call of duty or halo.. something about them being too big and involved of a game (esp playing online i bet) to just run off your harddrive. i remember when that feature came out they specifically said not to do it with halo, and im sure its the same with COD

yea i tried to fix mine i failed. so i sent mine in and they sent it back saying it was opened before so they didnt accept it and my warrenty was gone...

honestly, I don't care if he ends up payiing only $50. He is still willing to pay $250 up front for a new xbox just to play a fuckin game on the day it comes out. maybe I'm just missing something but this seems seriously sad to me.

this wasn't an arguement about whether or not video games should be played. It was an argument about priorities.

Any activity can have a negative impact on your life. I smoke too much weed, im always high and its affecting me in much the same way video games affect other people. so why do ppl hate so much on video games but not weed?

I play about 4 hours of madden everyday. I smoke about 2 grams a day. Some would say I'm a total loser wasting opportunities.

But I also prioritize. I go out 4 nights a week, fuck plenty, maintain a 3.9, and contribute to my frat.

My point is, as long as you prioritize the important things, why not play video games?
