What do you see when you look at Canada?
Whats better in the States compared to us?

I need to write an essay about a Canadian issue from an American's point of view. We're essentially writing the opposite to Margaret Atwood's "A Letter to America", and I'm completely stumped for a topic.
I'm going to use this with my brainstorming, so anything goes as long as its not offensive to anyone.

If you get sick and spend a month in the hospital with mutiple treatments and dont have heath insurance... there goes the money for your post secondary education. If I break every bone in my body, get cancer, aids, bang my head and spend 3 years in a coma in the hospital it costs me and my family next to nothing

yeah dude, the only real "political/real issue" in Canada that Americans at least think they know about is socialized medicine. Outside of that it is the stereotypical posts you have seen so far. Igloos, hockey, maple syrup, and bears. And that damn Yukon license plate. IT'S THE SHAPE OF A DAMN BEAR!!!!

Dude, the Canadian Special Forces are some of the best in the world only really matched by the British SAS. And this is coming from someone that is seriously thinking about joining either the Navy to be a SEAL or the Marines. The SAS help train the SEALs and Recon Marines after they are done with hell week and are officially accepted. The only thing that the US military has on Canada and the SAS, is purely logistical stuff, meaning the technology they use, pure amount of weapons, ammuntion, and just, well, stuff.

for the most part we arent so different

my family has a cottage on lake erie in canada, and there anyways it isnt really any different from living in michigan

i'm surprised how into american politics our neighbors there are

and one time on a chairlift in whistler, a middle age guy was complaining to me about america as if everything was my fault, that was my only bad experience with a canadian, ever.

Well stereotypically...cold, people that say eh, french, skiing, maple syrup, tim hortons, mountains, emptiness, toronto, montreal.

And on a ski trip i planned in high school, we had a girl who talked to the Canadians we met and asked if they really lived in igloos and didn't know what hotdogs were...

And I'm at a military academy in Vermont, so we joke about the Canadian Army all the time. And we say how Canada's not really a country...just America's hat lol.

heres my response: break an arm in canada:

fixed in a day, doesnt cost a thing

break an arm in USA: fixed in a day... months of debt

Get a brain tumour in usa: your alive and kicking but you are covered in debts for ever

same brain tumour in canada: it may be curable with public and cost you next to nothing. if they say no... go to public hospital and you have the same debts as in america.

the point is that depending on the severity of your illness you can be refused public healthcare coverage but that just means your not getting a reduction on the price or time so you go to private and get the normal price.

Better big cities, beaches, 10X as many people (if that is good), pretty much all the pop culture comes from the US, Vegas, military.  Other than that I pretty much look at Canada as part of America.

As much as you Canadians want to be different we are pretty much the same people separated by a made up border.  I feel the exact same in Canada as I do in the US and you guys have the same percentage of racist, fat, stupid, people that we do so stop trying to be all arrogant all the time.

meh.. at least not around here. I live about 2 hours from the border and many Canadiens come here to shop because we are the closest populated area for many of them. Sure people joke about the stereotypes but most people realize they are basically the same people.

I think maybe Morrocco could be added to that list?? Im not too current on the events in Africa.

I do agree however that the Euros severly screwed that continent when drawing the borders.

On topic: Im not american, but when Americans come to Vancouver, they are always blown away when they see people smoking a joint infront of a Starbucks, The library or at the Art gallery. I have a friend who is a cop in South WA st, and he tells me some pretty hilarious stories about busting kids with drugs. Point Im trying to make is, drugs are looked at by the law much differently up here, in my opinion, maybe not the harder drugs, but Marijuana for sure...

Another thing, Do you americans have "safe injection sites" for heroin addicts? You could maybe do something on that.

There is this burrito place in Whistler, I am sure some of you guys know about it.  But we went there several times when I was out there.  Anyway the girl working there was so high that she never once charged us for anything.  Never made an attempt to.


We bought weed from her.
