Leaves???

so today my friend and I started working on our dropin for a quarterpipe. not with snow... but leaves. We went around and bagged leaves or stole other peoples bags of leaves and piled them up so we can put the bags against his garage so in the winter we need that much less snow to build a huge drop in. we are ready for winter.

well baisicly we are building a base so we dont need so much snow later buy piling bags of leaves. it shold work haha

Eh, unless they're really wet and already compressed it's not going to be be stable at all.  You can put snow on it, but it's not going to hold it's shape at all.  anytime weight hits it, it's going to just crack and ruin the shape.
Just unbag the leaves and spray them with a hose until they're compressed.

wont it all just move once you hit it? even if you pile snow on top it'll all just end up compressing and breaking you're jump/quarter pipe. It's worth a try I guess, if it works that's sick and a lot less work, if it doesn't then you just got a bunch of bags of leaving on your lawn. Good luck.

hes saying hes building a base for his starter with bags full of leaves to have less snow to pile up.

may be a good idea but leaves dont seem super solid lol youll just end up crushing all the bags and they will spread out everywhere and you can say goodbye to the oh so perfect leaf-based kicker!

tell us if it works when there will be snow

^^^ thanks for positive imput! plus k! haha i love when people are actually positive or have contructive crtisism (noy saying the other thread responses wernt because they were positive to) but i havent been a member long and have already realized that you cant expect people to be nice.

I don't think it's less work as much as it's permanent, if the snow melts then bags are still there and all they have to do is wait for/get more snow and cover it back up - it makes sense, I'm just not sure on how well it'll stay together, you may want to really pack it down and try and find a way to get it to stay put by framing it in with wood (just the back and sides).

that won't work at all, it'll be a huge negative effect. the leaves will decompose and stuff and they will get mushy and smell like complete shit(yes, it actually smells like horrible shit)

The only problem is that snow doesn't stick at all to garbage bags.  They would work better as a base for a jump maybe, but on something as steep as a q-pipe, I think you are just going to end up blowing it off.  If you find that the snow keeps sliding off, try putting carpet, old blanket or something similar over the bags of leaves, so that it will give the snow something to grip to.

altough this edit is wicked nice, and one of the best edits of the past year, this isn't about the thread...

the kid is planning on using bags with leaves as a base for his QP.
and even if he was planning on really skiing on leaves; when you watch the making of this movie, you'll see that they ski on snow/turf/other surfaces, but not on leaves; the leaves are there for pure cinematic effect...

skiing leaves doesn't work well....

on the same site as the leaf edit, there is a video of how they made it. i believe that they put snow under the leaves.

thats what i did 2 years ago. theres a condo parking next to my house so we asked the tractor guy who does the snow removal to blow everything on to our lawn

wish i had a slope to build something where i am.... closest thing would a be a local sledding hill.  people build some fun lil booters on it sometimes.

i have a flat backyard too. we actually built a pretty legit setup. it was a huge pile of snow that went down to an urban style down. and you could hit a flat down to the left. ill try and find pics of it

yeah, send pics

and to all you guys that have your own backyard set-ups... winter, summer, or both,  that's probably the quickest way to fine-tune your progression.  Minny-parks don't get enough credit in my opinion, it gives people a chance to fine tune some of the fundamentals of balance and rotation.

nothin like waking up, walking out to the backyard, and sliding some rails
