if price is a big factor, you might want to consider a hardtail, as you will get a way better bike for the same price. plus they are a lot less mantinence. if you want a good all around full sus, here are some good options

-Kona Coiler
-Wetless XP (not fancy, but suposedly a great bike)
-Iron Horse Hollowpoint
-Giant NRS


something you want to look for is a stable valve suspension (manitou SPV, Fox pro pedal, Ect.), a good drive train, and geometry. it gets kinda complicated, but the bikes geometry is gonna affect the ride more than anything bolted onto it.

Chinstay lenght- Shorter length will equal faster acceraltion and better turning, but less stability.

Wheel base- the longer it is the more stable it will be, but it will be harder to move the bike around. This becomes very evident when you star riding skinny bridges and such.

Head angle- steeper will give you a faster ride (it soaks up bumps better) and more stability, but it also slows steering response and lengthens the wheelbase

toptube- the longer it is, the easier it will be to climb (puts your weight farther forward). however, it also makes the bike harder to wheelie/jump ect.

thats about it. if you do it often, mt biking will get you in great shape for skiing and its ridiculously fun.

it's rad that you want to buy a decent bike but if you're just getting into it all, you may want to look at rides that are a couple hundred less...it's always a good idea to have some $ for replacing parts and stuff, especially if you are going to do a lot of different riding...try to get something that is a solid ride, can handle the abuse, but doesn't empty your wallet...it's hard to get a bike that is suitable for smooth xc riding, some downhill and urban drops...

ds (dual supension) works great in both xc and minor downhill but you usually have to ride an air shock if you want to be able to really roll in the hills...air shocks are great for xc and light downhill cuz they give you a good 3+ inches of travel in the back, travel that isn't bobbing up and down when you pedal...pay attention to the pivot points of the ds bikes that you check out and test ride to see how effective they are at neutralizing play in the rear suspension...so ds with an air shock is great for xc and light downhill, avoid a coil (an actual spring for rear suspension) if you plan on doing a good deal of xc (which i assume you may cuz it keeps you in great shape for the winter)...airshocks, however, are not good at taking the big hits...3 inches of air travel blows out pretty easy and seals bust on any substantial drops...i'm not saying that they don't suck up the hits and rollers in xc (cuz you can find spots to go pretty big) and that they won't hold up in dirt jumps and rythm sections but they aren't built to withstand a six footer to cement tranny...so air shock ds isn't the best way to go for urban...
you might rule out ds based on all that and decide to go hardtail but keep in mind that downhill riding on a hardtail can be rough and it likely won't feel as flowy as a ds would downhilling...solid hardtails are ridiculous in xc (they're super fast and tend to be lighter than a ds xc bike, unless you get a heavy bombproof ht) and a sturdy ht will handle urban and dj (dirtjump)...a hardtail is a good option for doing both xc and urban cuz while you may wants a heavier hardtail to withstand hard landings in urban, you'll still be able to ride xc pretty well...like he said ^ pay attention to geometry and how the measurements of the bike will suit what you want to do...you may want to get a ht that has dimensions in between the ideals for xc and jumping/drops...

so you have a bit of a toss up...i'm not saying that you can't ride everything on one bike but your bike will def do better in a couple respects and not well in another...i'd get a really solid ht if you want to ride xc and urban...you could even get a ds with airshock and just have to pump up the rear shock sometimes to repressurize it...downhill is best with a big bike so you may want to compromise and gear towards more xc and urban/dj...if xc and urban are the most accessible for you as well then try not to consider downhill too much when you are looking at bikes...

as for the bikes...the p3 is a great ride and holds up pretty well as a sturdy ht...you might also want to look at norco cuz they have some great ht's also...i haven't heard much about the enduro ht that you're looking at so i can't help you there...if you are going to look into air shocks for ds, check out specialized, trek, and santa cruz (though they are pretty pricey)...try to test ride as much as you can and check out a bunch of different rides...there are tons of companies out there that make great bikes, a lot of it is just finding the right one for you...good luck and come with more questions if you have them...i'm sure there are a good deal of people on the forum that ride also...lates

the P3 is a solid urban bike, but not too great for XC or downhill.

The P3 is a pretty good all round bike, especially for urban and DJs, it's actually one of the rental bikes here at the Fort William World Cup DH, Scotland, so it can't be that bad at DH. Good all round bike, it'd be my choice out of those three anyways :) Hardtail pride.

I have a Surly 1x1 - great for XC and Urban, but tough for DH. The singlespeed gearing makes it fun sometimes, but a bitch at others. I built it up myself, so I might be a little biased towards it.

in your position i'd buy a santa cruz bullit. it's a very solid bike and it's not that heavy...rocky mtn switch is also a nice ride but it's somewhat expencive

As for people hating on Canondale, I completely understand. They're a bitch to build out of the box(nothing is right, you need to fix EVERYTHING)especially when compared to a Rocky Mtn. Canondale frames have a sketchy reputation, and to top it all off, their bikes are usually ugly(which sucks when you drop $3000 on a ride. I don't care what you say, it should look nice.)BUT their new stuff, especially the gemini and chase hardtail(freeride stuff) is looking REALLY REALLY nice this year. And when 1.5 inch steer-tube forks become commonplace, your frame won't be out of date.

um yeah i race xcountry mtbs and i would definitely have to say i prefer hardtails more..it challenges you with more technicallity and you know your doing the work. i ride cannondale f900..not bad but could do better. and hopefully next year ill get sponsored by TREK so i can get some free bikes and shit.

i'm pretty sure i mentioned norco in my long ass post in the beginning of this thread^^^^^...as for the bullit, i agree...it's a solid ride but may not handle as well as you'd like in the hills during xc...it's heavier then you might want...it'll def handle downhill like a beast and urban drops too...santa cruz can be pretty expensive though so if you want to check them out try and look through the classifieds and stuff on pinkbike.com...you can find a lot of nice rides for decent $...

whats the deal on the norco 4x4? any comments on that frame?

norcos blow dick. the jeckylls are sick though, whoever said leftys suck is a complete douche bag. its the stiffest fork onthe market and now since they got rid of that fuckin air cartridge and use manitous tpc cartridge it kicks ass. i mean fuck if it works for boeing on the planes why the fuck wouldnt it work on a bicycle. and all the jeckylls come with either the fox propedal shock or the manitou swingers on the higher end jeckylls which makes the single pivot work just as well as any 4 bar linkage.

i have a jekyll 800 and i love it, i think the 600 is almost the same except it has cable disc brakes instead of hydraul so i'd go with that.

aoe you are obviously a dumbass also. considering cannondale stands behind there bicycles with a lifetime warranty, i have yet to see any cannondale within the past 5 or 6 years fail. i have worked in shops my whole life, as a matter of fact i work in a shop that is the second biggest cannondale and specialized dealer in the US. i would ride anything as long as it wasnt a norco.

jizack, at our shop we had carried norco, kona, specialized, pegeut (sp?), cannondale, giant, brodie, schwinn, mongoose, basically everything and we have dropped everything but norco specialized and kona. canondales break..alot. honestlyi dont know how their new stuff is like the gemini or the chase but we have a broken raven and jeckil (sp) frame at the shop right now. We only picked up norco 3 years ago but they have grown by leaps and bounds. since about 98 when the freeride scene started and norco jumped on boear they have been progressing more than any company out there...at a phonominal rate. they actually listen to what people want and make affordable bikes (they already sold out of the atomics for the year). So dont tell me I'm a dumbass, especially when it comes to bikes

^ oh and about the lefty. i will agree with you that they are suprisingly stiff compared to what you think. but they arnt really that stiff. compared to say a sherman (which i hate) or similar. but for a 4.5lbs fork they are one of the stiffest
