if youre looking ONLY for transportation, obviously get a longboard

if you actually want to learn new stuff, meaning flip tricks and the like im assuming, you obviously cant do this on a longboard.

in summary, i think skateboardings a lot more fun.

buy a longboard, talk to your friends who skate, and i guarantee that between them theyll be able to throw you a decent skateboard together using their old stuff. i havent bought a deck in the longest, because some kids just dont like to skate decks after a month or so.. this is where you attack

if you want to use it for transportation get a longboard, commuting on skateboards sucks unbelievable amounts. you have to push like every 5 feet and its even worse than walking, and if you try to go down any hills on a skateboard you're going to get speedwobbles like a mofo and get thrown off your board and eat shit. longboards keep speed really well and can cruise forever, so hands down i would definitely get a longboard

skateboarding is no more challenging than longboarding.
of course just pushing down the street on either isnt challenging.

but downhill, dancing, and sliding, takes tonnes of skill.
just as much as riding a park on a shortboard

from what you said I really doubt youve been on a longboard or even pushed it to its limits.
I was skateboarding for 4 years before I picked up a longboard
and taking a longboard down a hill at 60mph hour is A LOT tougher than kickflipping a set

just get both, they do different things. a buddy of mine has both (i have just a longboard), he does tricks on his skateboard and bombs hills and gets around places on his longboard.

im not the one in here telling kids they dont know how to longboard or arnt pushing it to its limits. makeing bold claims to go 60mph.

anyways to the OP try out both see what feels right to you. id reccomend a skateboard in most situations but if your in a place like salt lake with great public transit in TRAX making the U of U campus and the streets of salt lake a ski resort of sortsand the ability to do longboard laps much like ski laps id go for a longboard for sure.
