Replying to Transferring colleges after one semester? Help please

Right now I'm attending a community college. I graduated from high school last year. I applied a few months ago to a university(Michigan State) and I just called them today, and they said that not many students with one semester of college under there belt make it in. I'm doing real well at my community college, which isn't too bad but anyways, does anyone know anything more about this? Has anybody transfered there freshmen year of college after first semester to a university?
