El Nino Predictions?

So this year is an El Nino year, and that means (hopefully) lots of snow for everyone. I ride out of Squaw Valley, CA so I'm definitely stoked for larger amounts of pow this year. What are your predictions? How do you think your seasons will turn out! :D

hate to break it to you, but this event's probably going to be pretty effin weak. maybe next year we will have a 1998.. but this season? nope. expect more averageness like last season and the year before.

doesnt suck, but doesnt mean epic pow either..

yeah... they were weird el ninos that slammed southern california instead... until the big droughts of the late 80's-early 90's that is.

it looks like Colorado go the hook up this time. we've gotten around 1-2 FEET in denver last night and today and it's still snowing hard

to bad the el nino is weak and may not even be around by december.  last time there was an el nino in the northwest was the worst winter ever!

its all about la nina! 8 feet in 6 days and well over 600" of snow 2 years ago in Washington. El nino tends to fuck us up here in the corner though...

hmm...I wonder if Duhamelski is Matt Duhamel.....and yeah, we had el nino seasons in 98 and 99 and it was dope, and I think again in 2005, which was dope-er-er. Pyramid rock was almost completely buried. So, I'm gonna stick with the predicted epicness of this season.

Representing Taos and I believe that our season is going to be fucking EPIC! Hopefully we get a shit ton of snow. El Nino has never failed us. Pray to the snow gods for tons of snow.

Someone posted up some website with cool info about El Nino years and what it means for snowfall. Taos definitely gets clobbered by El Nino, Tahoe, not so much. I wish I had bookmarked it.

All I can say is. CA needs snow BADLY. The last time we had an average or above average amount of snow was back in the 2005-2006 season. I want MOAR POW! Central CA needs to get slammed this year.

98-99 was an El Nino year and that is the year Mt. Baker broke the record for snowfall...  Just saying.

I'm just hoping for another 2005-2006 season. Kirkwood had what.. around 900 inches of snow? I think it might have beat out baker that season... and Squaw had one of the most epic seasons of all time. So glad that was my senior year of high school and I could just ditch up to lake tahoe all the time. so sweet.

pretty cool, but try independent study coupled with living in an olympic valley studio next to Dave's ski shop that season. Wake up in the morning and cross country over to the lift with my two best homies, no responsibilities, just pure fun. I think I left a piece of my soul behind, easily the greatest highlight of my life thus far. The kids at davis high must have truly hated us that year. I'd donate a kidney to go back and do it again. Riding demoed spatulas through that deep deep snow, and getting the chance to meet and ride the lift with the legend Shane McConkey. There was so much snow that season we drilled a pair of water skis and made them work.

Last time we had El Nino; Ruidoso, New Mexico got 35 feet of snow.  While that's not a lot by West standards, that made for a great year down south.  We've already seen a couple of good size dumps so I'm optimistic for this year.

You Lucky Bastard. I'm lucky enough to be blessed with a family with a house in Squaw. And its nice to be able to drive about a minute down the road and be at Squaw, but I'd definitely be stoked on being right in front of KT as well.

Everyone has their amazing tales of amazingness from Tahoe that season...

I had a cabin at Alpine that season. Skied 4 times a week, and got in 74 days or so whilst also somehow going to my HS classes down in the valley from time to time. Worked in a shop extremely part time. Got a pair of Prophet 130's for cheap, and used the fuck out of them. It, was, awesome. We had a 4.5 week spring break, because there was a bomb scare that closed the school for an entire week 1/2 longer than it should have been... I skied pow in dumping storms every available day from early march-mid april. It killed.

That logic fails.

This year is unlike any other El Nino year before that we have record of. The pattern has been very anti-El Nino. There are very few analogs (years that meteorologists use to compare to upcoming winters) that fit well. In fact, many of the analog years are... La Nina years. I have word that one of the top analogs right now is 1968-1969. My point is this: It's foolish to place your "trust" in El Nino. Especially a year like this--expect this year to be full of surprises all across the board.
