Calling all Military men and women (US onry, sorry Canada)

Alright guys, I need some input. I'm extremely interested in joining the Military (leaning towards Air Force) but I have one rather large obstacle in my way. Unfortunately, I have asthma which is a dis-qualification to join any branch and in order to get in needs to be medically waivered. I've been seeing an Asthma physician since I was 8 (still do to this day at 19). So basically I have a few questions that still haven't been 100% answered.

1. Do you know/seen people with Asthma in the Military who got it waivered (seeing Doc past age 13 + Inhaler)

2. If you do get waivered, do they give you an inhaler just in case?

3. Say I do lie about my Asthma, and in Basic I tell the doc's that I need an inhaler -- Is this grounds for getting kicked out?

4. Is there anything to improve my stock? I scored a 76 on the Practice ASVAB and am sure with a little studying I can get mid 80's to 90 on the test.

Unbelievable..

There's not too much that pisses me off more than people disrespecting our military. You don't have to fucking agree with it. If it weren't for them, maybe you wouldn't have the option. But at least RESPECT it.

I don't give a shit where you stand as far as politics go. These guys are out there serving for us so you sure as hell should support them, whether you agree with the war or not.

Youre saying we, with the right of free speech and free ideas, should support something we dont agree with because 50+ years ago they fought a war defending these ideas rather than voicing our opinions on the matter?

I do not support any war after WWII. I do not support the military. I support the troops by suggesting that they shouldn't be out there risking their lives for other people's financial gain.

Outside the "fucking tool" comment, you are saying the same thing the person you quoted said. You don't agree with the war, neither do I. I do however hope that our troops who are fighting and risking their lives come home safely and want them home very soon. Calm yourself down and read what the person you quoted said. It is essentially the same thing.

Yeah.

And on account of your asthma thing, yeah, the Air Force won't want to touch you. Navy or Army is probably your best bet.

The military has defended no freedoms of mine during my life time. Not once has any of my civil rights been violated by another country.

If anyone here honestly believes that bullshit about "oh wow those troops are dying over there to fight for your freedom of speech and you talk shit about omg ur horrible" you are an ignorant mother fucker.

they do not defend anything, the U.S. military plays an offensive strategy seizing territory in the middle east that can be used for financial gains. Nothing less nothing more.

People sign up for varying reasons, it doesn't mean they are stupid and don't know what is going on. Saying that is incredibly arrogant and if you hate it, then go protest the war at a base and spit on the troops.

And I defend the so called according to you "mindless drones" because, my dad served in Vietnam, his dad served in WWII, my mom had three uncles all die in WWII for the Japanese side, my 4 best friends from high school signed up. I hope you go to a base and call them mindless drones, I really do. Knowing how if you are like most people that act this way you will just sit by your computer mouthing off and never actually do anything.

And yes, I am. I am thinking about signing up for the Marine Corps when I go home for Christmas to get shipped out when I finish my undergraduate degree.

Asthma pretty much screws you man :[
Disqualifies you from ROTC which is a really good route. If you have had treatment post 13yso, they will find out, and even if they don't your gonna get caught sometime. A kid in my ROTC Battalion tried to slip by and he made until about the 2nd week of PT and pretty much had an Asthma attack which got him booted. I don't think you can get waived for it but if you really want me to i can look into it through DODMERB and let you know.

I'm reading Black Hawk Down and the Army takes people with Asthma cause the guy that uses the inhaler in the movie, really actually DID have an inhaler with him in Somalia.

im not taking anythign out on the troops im just saying the majority of them would help our economy better if they put their low iqs to good use at say maybe mcdonalds or something along those lines. anyone who has some sort of intellegence that is involved in the military certainly isn't going to be on the front lines.

Not every person in the military agrees with the current government and it's actions. Not every person in the military is a storm trooper for the U.S. government. I'm not gonna sit here and even argue politics with you. But i'm serving my country because. . .
A. It's a good thing to do for your country.
B. It's a solid financial move for me right now.
C. I can maximize my skiing in college because of my financial situation.
D. I won't have debt and will always be able to have a job.
and
E. There are reserve units all across the mountainous areas of the U.S.

So respect peoples decisions to defend our country no matter what, disrespecting people in the military is a low blow.
I think you should tell your feelings to your local American Legionnaires or active duty soldiers.
Just down right ass hole bro.

and to the creator, don't give up on any one branch (especially Air Force) cause they might not give you a waiver for your condition right now but you can always work out a deal with the U.S. Government, rules change every day too. Plus DODMERB might pass you considering the fact that you have a rare condition.

That was in the early 90's bro. The military is actually selective now, i know it's a suprise but they aren't taking every person that signs up like people think they are.
Just talk to multiple recruiters from the same branch. Don't get suckered into a shitty deal with the Army either cause the recruiters will promise you that $20,000 signing bonus and you'll get it but it will be a tour or two in the middle east for $19,000 a year before it will change and you gotta be willing to do that.

ACTUALLY, I am two years into a Political Science degree and want to go to Law School but feel that once I finish my degree I will be so burnt out on school I will want to take some time off. Once I get to this point, the economy will probably be so fucked up most decent paying jobs won't be around so I feel the military is something that is pretty much always available so why not do that for 4 years and then see what I want to do from there.

THIS IS A POST TO THE OP NOT A RESPONSE TO ANY OF YOU THAT DOWNTALK THE MILITARY

I can not count how many times this thread has made me throw up in my mouth. However out of respect to the OP I am not going to argue against all the military haters out there.

To the OP, when I joined the Marines (5 years ago) they were very strict on asthma. I do not forsee how anyone with asthma could ever make it through boot camp. Sorry I just dont think it would be possible. Also as far as I know they dont issue out asthma inhalers in boot camp.

I dont know if this has been said before since I stopped reading after about 2 pages but your best bet is too TALK TO YOUR RECRUITER!!!!!!!!!!!!!! based on the needs of the service they can either be leniant or strict on handing out waivers.






p.s the Marines actually have more aircraft in their fleet than the Air Force or Navy. If you are set on the Airforce then thats cool as fuck man and more power to you brother.
I'm iin the Marines and my MOS is 6256 which is a C-130 airframe mechanic.

i'm just curious, how many aircraft do the marines have? Cause I remember seeing that the air force has nearly 5,500, and it just seems like that would be a bit of a stretch for the marines to have more aircraft than that. (though i know for certain the marines have a ton of helicopters, so perhaps thats where the difference is?)
