Calling all Military men and women (US onry, sorry Canada)

Alright guys, I need some input. I'm extremely interested in joining the Military (leaning towards Air Force) but I have one rather large obstacle in my way. Unfortunately, I have asthma which is a dis-qualification to join any branch and in order to get in needs to be medically waivered. I've been seeing an Asthma physician since I was 8 (still do to this day at 19). So basically I have a few questions that still haven't been 100% answered.

1. Do you know/seen people with Asthma in the Military who got it waivered (seeing Doc past age 13 + Inhaler)

2. If you do get waivered, do they give you an inhaler just in case?

3. Say I do lie about my Asthma, and in Basic I tell the doc's that I need an inhaler -- Is this grounds for getting kicked out?

4. Is there anything to improve my stock? I scored a 76 on the Practice ASVAB and am sure with a little studying I can get mid 80's to 90 on the test.

the only reason there is any threat towards the united states is the way our government and peoples act on a day to day basis, as well as past foreign relations playing world police. period. theres a reason people hate our people and everything we stand for.

the american mindset to foreign relations is on the same level as mankinds mindset in relation to the greater animal kingdom. that we are some sort of above all gift to the world, better than anything in existence anywhere. grow up. mankind are a bunch of apes with ipods and billboards, and 'mericas more "evil and corrupt" than the majority of the world leaders bad sides put together. wars are fought to put money into weaponry corporation and hired guns pockets (see: halliburton).

yes kim jong il and ahmadinejad are some scary people. they do some fucked up things to their citizens. the only harm they have towards us, (remember the defense you are all using as defending our people, defending me when i rest my head on my pillow at night?) are nukes. what sizable army is really planning on walking up to our doorstep right now? internal civil war is far more likely than a domestic invasion. why is it so difficult to take a pacifist view on this subject and deal with this over peace talks?

america suffers from a serious case of kick everyones asses then attempt to build mini americas after. when will humankind transcend above different monkey tribes beating each other over the head with sticks and bones. now we have automatic machine guns and nuclear weaponry.

this viscous cycle will never end if wars continue to be fought. every war has adverse consequences which spark future wars. what is mankinds destiny? to quarrel with each other on this tiny third rock from our sun until one of us has the balls to launch a nuke and start world war 3 and extinguish the candle of our microscopic presence in this universe and beyond? we must transcend this bullshit into a peaceful equal society. kicking peoples asses only takes us in steps towards the end of man kind. we must move into an enlightened unified peaceful society. there is no other option besides the end of our human race.imagine if a QUARTER of the money were put into our space programs instead of our militaries. i'd much rather be exploring the cosmos then sitting around getting in little bitchfits with our 100th cousins. no matter what religion you prescribe to we are all brothers and sisters, our ancestry dates back to the same people. one love.

i am against military action because i actually take a millisecond and consider the world and peoples around me.

i really really wish the world was in a state of peace and equality,hell, if communism were a realistic and feasible theory that was actually possible to achieve i would be all for it. but that isn't our current reality, and it will not be for a very long time (or probably ever) so stop smoking so much weed, and take an ACTUAL REALISTIC look at the world and its current state, and at very LEAST don't hate people for dealing with it for what it is.

thats all ive got for this thread, if you want to believe that America is evil in all cases and that the world should just be great and perfect and at peace, fine...enjoy your sheltered life as best you can.

If you actually did take that millisecond to think you would realize that the world is what it is, the peoples around you consist of people who are willing to kill and go to war for many reasons and it will always be that way. that is why absolute power corrupts absolutely and that is why diplomacy will always fail eventually in most cases, people are assholes. no one is ever going to agree to just spend our money on playing nice and exploring.

Flight clearances are more strict, and Air Force spec ops is just about as intense as it gets.  Look up Combat Rescue Officers, PJ, TACP, etc.  They all work joint with Marines, Navy, and Army, but they do stuff like freefall from 25,000 feet with SEALs so they can call in air strikes under fire.  Ever seen Transformers?  Basically for real, those guys were all AF.

As for the Asthma, if you get the waiver you are good to go but that one is pretty dependent on the severity and type of asthma you have.

You are basically just repeating all the worst attitudes in history.  One easy to remember and understand example:  Europe allows Hitler to very slowly violate minor pieces of the Treaty of Versailles.  You realize that he peacefully "annexed" both Austria and Czechoslovakia without anyone doing anything more than wagging a finger at him?  With no opposition and nothing but diplomacy in his way he planned to take over Europe, which he was only 9 days from doing at one point.  If he wasn't such a strategic goon, he would have likely steamrolled Europe.  He plotted against the US (who wanted NOTHING TO DO WITH IT) simply because we posed a threat by existing. 

The main point is that ignoring those who do pose a danger to the world (not just the US, don't be so close minded) must be at the least kept at a safe distance.  I'm not saying war is the answer, but you better believe that the mere presence of a powerful military is the only reason we haven't had to fend off an invasion since Britain decided we were to independent.  Once again, whether or not we should flex those muscles today is left to your own opinion, but to denounce the existence of the military is simply idiotic and naive.  It's a necessary evil until everyone in the world can agree to drop their sword at the same time (which isn't going to happen).


Sorry that was so long, probably won't change anything but I just felt like writing tonight.

That's politics fault, not the Army's.  Trust me, people in the military don't enjoy heading to the sand pit for 18 months to get shot at.  Not at all.  I understand where you anger is coming from, but you should probably target your local congressman with an intelligent letter rather than the person who volunteered to go so that others don't have to.

you do realize the US has several peacefully annexed nations and invades countries with zero proven basis. if you took a poll of which countries foreign relations best model the third reich in todays society most fingers would be pointed at america and george w bush. government leaders have called the bush hitler and the devil for christ sakes. under your logic aren't we the ones who should be kept in check?

the reason diplomacy doesn't work now is because we didn't use it in the past. cause and effect, its very very very simple. every single war ever fought poses settings for new conflict down the road. always. we've been using military action our entire existence and look where thats taken us.

there are two paths to be taken. steps towards world peace, and steps towards nuclear obliteration. every war fought takes us the wrong way. if we took 1% of the trillions of dollars we put forth for the military and put it towards humanitarian efforts and peace talks the possibilities would be endless.

we cannot forever play out this stupid beating your neighbor over the head with a club action. the first step in the right direction is to stop "flexing our muscles" and start real initiative for a changed mentality in our world community.

we need wars to keep the population down. I love it when people complain about wars and the military, and how that money should be spent on humanitarian efforts, and saving children in africa etc, but then go and say that the human race has to act and do something about the population problem.

and to some of you-we get it, you don't like the military. Then don't join!

the way i see it, there are 3 types of people

-those that hate the military until they need it for their personal good
-those that accept that military as a necessity, for better or worse
-those that enjoy having a military, and either support it or join it

I'd definitely consider myself the 3rd type since i'm most likely going to join in a few years after i finish school. (gotta finish to get that officer position)

and no, just because we dont hate the military doesn't mean we are sheep. If anything, it shows that you are. What, do you think you're being original, unique, and creative in not liking the military? No, instead you're being an idiot. I'd love to see what people like valley would say if one day we woke up, and chinese tanks were rolling in through mexico, and their ships were off our coasts. (hypothetical situation obviously, i doubt it'll happen)


so here's what it comes down to:

countries without militaries are the easiest targets, and on a large scale, do not exist. If you think the US could abandon our military and live on in peace, you're sorely mistaken. I'd give it less than a year until some russians, chinese, maybe even south americans or europeans come knocking. And then what?


oh, and to answer the original question, i believe in the air force you can get a waiver easily, unless  you wish to be a pilot. but even if you do, i think there may still be some hope. good luck to you, however you decide.

i was just using those as ridiculous examples, including the population bit. of course the military's primary purpose would be to eliminate dictators etc, but i was just giving the more outrageous side of things. I apologize if my arguments are not the best, i'm currently working on some papers from classes so my mind isn't completely on this.

and i agree with you. peace is a fantastic thing, and we should strive for it. but at the moment it just isn't feasible. And it likely never will. Diplomacy will not always work, the politicians won't always figure things out, and sometimes fighting just needs to happen. It's unfortunate, but it happens.

hate the principles and the idea, not the people fighting.

Lol @ some of the kids in this thread.

First off half of you kids are mixing up our countries politics to the individual members of the military. Just because someone joins the military it doesn't necessarily mean they agree with with the decisions Washington is making. Given you could argue why would you join a company (the military) if you don't agree with your boss's(the government) commands/decisions. But honestly the armed forces gives some really great benefits that some really need; in addition i personally think those benefits should be increased cause I think our troops deserve better. Not to mention the military teaches skills and traits that no other experience could teach you.

The majority of this site, myself included, really do not understand how well off they are. Just because your parents pay for your 40k a year tuition and health/car insurance doesn't mean everyone else can. So to simply say why would you want to join the military, cause i disagree with our countries politics is a real ignorant statement.

Lastly some of you kids need get your fucking ethics right. Our armed forces do serve our country; so  yes maybe they are fighting someone else's war today, and you may not even agree with it. But if needed, tomorrow they will be fighting our war without hesitation. Pretty much pay respect to the military, they deserve it.

Sorry for that rant, and i have no clue to the OP question.

the military does provide an awesome opportunity for someone looking to get an education. stated that the first thing i posted in this thread.

You do realize, some people join the military because, oh let' see, our economy is so FUCKED that they can't get a job. They also join the military, cause even if they could pay for college, they don't know what they want to do. Some people, like two of my best friends, they joined cause it would be their only opportunity to travel. And to be frank, most members who have been shipped to Iraq and Afghanistan realize what they are doing isn't really helping, but they are still willing to try.


And hurry the fuck up on leaving, but, by god, don't go to Canada, they have a military too. Oh shit, um, let's see, who doesn't have a military of some form. OH YEAH!!!! GO TO A FUCKING THIRD WORLD NATION IF YOU DON'T WANT TO DEAL WITH PEOPLE IN A MILITARY! Like, Somalia, they don't even have a fucking government.

son you can travel at any point in your life. misconceived notions of societies grip on us is all that holds us back. i know two homies, one with $500 in his pocket, one with $50 in his pocket have traveled the globe.

costa rica doesn't have a military. and you see canada uses a military for defense. along with every single other first world country besides america. quit using the argument omg waht if those commie chinese or those russians, they used to be commies rightz, come with tankz and gunz and shit. thats what military should be used for. defense. america really has not gotten that through their thick skulls somehow.

The majority of the world used to look to the United States to do something cause they can't rely on the UN with their Baby Blue helmets anymore. That's why the US Rangers and Delta Force ended up in Somalia, that's why we were in the first Gulf War (Here is what the UN does, "Oh Saddam, you, um, can't invade Kuwait, can you please leave?")...

I understand that you do not war, and I think most of the people here and elsewhere agree. Unfortunately, this is our condition; there will always be war and conflict. With your pessimistic responses, I would have thought you knew this. Do you honestly think people will ever live in peace?

How can you not appreciate what the men and women of the armed services do for you everyday? While the reasons behind our current conflicts are questionable, we, as Americans are responsible whether you like it or not. That is the way democracy works. If you don't like it, please leave. Soldiers are needed in these conflict whether they like it or not. If it wasn't for them it would be people like you and I fighting in conflicts we don't fully believe in.


So please, next time you think about shit talking the US Military, quell your ungrateful, naive thoughts, for just a moment (it will be hard I know), and think about how much you would like getting shot at, in a fucking hellhole, 25 hours a day. Thanks.

look at it in the context of any job. For example, i used to work for Sears. Periodically our upper management would do or release something that people didn't agree with. (union issues) Does that mean a customer should come in, and yell at me, a lowly cashier for it? The military is a job, and soldiers are it's employees. They don't always agree or like what they do, but they don't very well have much of a choice. And someone said that they are not volunteers awhile ago because they got paid. That's using something like a high school definition of volunteer. They voluntarily join, then get paid for their service. So yes, in theory, they are hired guns. But once again, comparing it to another job, thats like saying i voluntarily joined sears holdings  corporation to become a hired cashier. No one forces them to join, and so it's voluntary.


and as you said, if people don't think the military would drop iraq/afghanistan in a second to return to defend the US, then you are very mistaken.
