Is it possible to slide a tree on skis? i no snowboarders do it but my friend just chopped down a tree and made it into a pretty sweet down rail. now the upper-sode of the rail is prett smoothed out (no more bark and shit) but im still a bit worried about catching an edge. any tips on how to properly smooth out a tree jib?
make sure there is nothing extra to catch your edges on; bumps, knots, etc. The planer idea works, you could also sand it down with an electric sander.
Most importantly though is to wax it like CrAzY!!
It'll work fine, even not sanded at all. It'll just be really gnarly, and it might be funny to watch. I've seen people sliding fallen trees with the bark stripped off them, so it isn't all that big a deal.
Also, Alpine Meadows set up a tree grind two seasons ago, and it was far, far easier for me to do than a regular rail. However, I didn't know how to slide a regular rail at the time, and the added resistance of the wood makes it more like sliding on snow than metal or polyurethane/whatever goes on boxes.
exercise caution on wooden rails. if you don't plan on icing it, wax it for sure, and detune your edges. unless you really prepare it right, i would say its not worth the risk of eating absolute shit
