Replying to Children left behind
My friend wrote this to our fine vice president. it is great!
Dear Mr. Cheney:
I am writing you today because of a terrible injustice which I know
you will correct if you knew about it.
My mother is a Head Start teacher and has been teaching all-day
Head Start at a local elementary school for several years now. As
four-year-olds graduate from her class, they move on to kindergarten.
But, you see, Mr. Vice President, there is a problem. If my mother's
students want to continue to attend all-day school, they must pay
$2,000 for a year of all-day kindergarten (As I'm sure you know,
to qualify for Head Start, a family's income must fall, at maximum,
just above the poverty line). These families cannot afford to pay
for a quality education for their children (this in a country where
quality education is supposed to be free).
My mother needs $18,000 to send her nine students through full-day
kindergarten and I was wondering if you could help. I know that,
on a recent fundraising trip to Colorado, you raised over $300,000.
Perhaps you could give only $18,000 of that to fund quality education
for a group of students in need? And I'm not just saying this for
the sake of these children; think how well this would play in the
press-- The vice president cares so much about quality education
that he's willing to pay for it out of his own coffers!
You may have noticed my rather paritsan e-mail address, but let
me assure you: although I am generally extremely left-wing, there
is no political motivation whatsoever in the request that I now
make of you. I hope that we can overcome our personal political
viewpoints to reach a solution that best benefits these children
(how about a few of those vouchers? I'm sure they would be well-received).
When you decide to do the right thing and help out these children, please get back to me.
Sincerely,
Andrew **********
