Discussion - shifty/sideways landings

A few of the edits as of late (especially from some of the more progressive pro’s) have featured the newest park rat trend – shifty landings. I’m not sure what to think of them. Sometimes I think they look like complete shit and ruin a trick, otherwise I’m kind of indifferent to them.. I have yet to see a trick really made by the shifty landing.

Here is the edit that got me thinking about the trick – Dane’s edit from the latest NS article. The shifty landings that throw me off are at 1:14, ,2:19 and 2:25. (Overall though, this edit is amazing)

yeah idk if i like them either. i agree it can ruin tricks but that first one looked nice in my mind. overall just no though

Well the three you pointed out are obviously not up to there full potential.  In my mind, for a push/dead lung to be legit it has to be quick and concise.  No slow buttering around.

I personally think sometimes they look really steezy, but other times really stupid. Brogan does really steezy ones in my opinion, and I think Dane's look fine with the exception of the last one which I think ruined the trick.

I'm gonna go ahead and say they were all no suppose to be there, the first one it looked like he might have wanted more spin out and just did that cause he was frustrated, the second one is obviously just him stopping his momentum after landing and the third looks to be like he landed sideways by accident and just tried to make it funny.

is skiing coming up with new names for tricks that already have a name again?

tip dives = nollies
kangaroo flips = dub flat
deadlung = landing off a rail
whiskey flip = double back in the pipe

huh to me those arent even real deadlungs
hornbeck, max hill and coal drexler do them really good and Im sure there are some others who do them just as good

I like the trick better when guys spin backside off and have their tips smack against the side of the box and then it sends their momentum back around the other way and they land regular. Like 90-tip smack-180. I am too lazy to find an example of one right now.

I guess if people think that dead lungs or whatever look cool thats their business, but whenever I do that I think that I didn't get the full spin around. Some can look pretty cool though, I suppose you can consider it the counterpart to when people butter around before hitting a rail.

well as far as this specifically, the deadlung is named after a snowboarder who helped start it a few years back, and was cited by max hill and c.a.s.g. recently. push was just what a few people on here started calling it, in my opinion revert seems more relevant

i think it looks terrible. pros may do it well when they were actually trying to do it, but this just gives kids an excuse to not fully bring their spins around. you know these "deadlungs" are going to be in just about every edit this winter, and they'll all look like shit.

not to mention they bomb out landings...

I think it's legit if it's completely obvious that you're doing it, for example if you were to throw and spin and not get the full rotation and land sideways and push it through and then claim deadlung I think that's lame, but if it's completely obvious (like Hornbeck and Tudor) then its dope, it also leads to new possibilities of tricks - imagine a blind 4 coming up short (so blind 3 off) and then deadlunging back the way you came (pretzel style) so you land face forward, I think that would be dope if done properly. It all depends on how they're done, sometimes it looks sick, sometimes it just looks like you fucked up and are trying to save it.

I see them as just another little tweak to show some more control, a little more steez if youre into 'em.

Personally I think they look alright, nothing special but not really harming the sport.

If you don't like them, don't do them, its pretty easy. We can all ride our own way, as long as you're shredding its all good.

Yeah, that looked pretty good.

I completely agree with everyone who says it looks better when you can tell the skier is completely in control and its intentional. I feel like Dane is good enough and has enough banger shots to fill his edits that if he didn't mean to do those, he wouldn't have put tricks into his edit that he didn't get all the way around and stomp.. Hence my assuming that those were supposed to be deadlungs.

To add to the baller list of pushes, hornbeck in refresh does some urban to what looks like switch but he lands and just pushes it forward its sooo baller, he also does it on the lift tower canon rail too i cant remember what trick he did though.

Personally, I'm gonna leave them up to Hornbeck. He's got them on lock and they're fun to watch. I'm not even gonna bother trying them because if you don't do them right it just looks like you under rotated and didn't stomp your trick. As mentioned above, just ANOTHER reason to go buy Refresh.

honestly, they don't really give anything to skiing. I mean, you can only do them off of rails cuz you will eat shit if you do them on a jump. Its just another fad that will be over as soon as it came

well that's not a very good attitude if you want to progress.. If I didn't try a trick because I thought it would look bad while I was learning it then I wouldn't learn many tricks at all.

Oh and I think deadlungs have great potential. Coal's in one of the casg edits where he almost 270 out but then brings it back and lands forward is sick, no time to find the vid now though

I wouldn't even count those ones in the Dane Tudor edit, I think he is just turning around.  Hornbeck had some seriously killer ones in Refresh though, very steeze.
