the JVC Everio series of cameras shoot in full HD (1080i) and are all reasonably affordable - like $500 to $1500

Only problem with the Everio series is that JVC created some proprietery bull shit where you have to use the editing software that comes with the camera.  The software isn't horrible, but most people would rather use imovie or final cut.  I think there is a way around the software though, JVC may have developed some device.  google it!

If you adjust the setting on the camera so it shoots in AVCHD rather than MPEG3 that it's fully importable into iMovie and Final Cut. That's what I use
