Moment Bibby vs. Surface One Life

Let me start off with, I have done plenty of research here and narrowed my choices down to one of these lovely skis here. Which one will it be?

I'm looking for a ski that will survive my last season before I head out to school. I have twisted and warped my 183cm Blends last year and the season before I destroyed and blew apart my 181 Thugs. So I'm hoping that one of these will survive. I am 6'2", around 170lbs. I live in Golden and ski Kicking Horse, so the ski is going to be everything, Big Mountain, Powder and just playing around of the drought days.
I'm heading out on plenty of road trips this year, so this ski will also take on the great abyss of different terrain.

This year I'm going with a rocker, I'm rather excited about it.

I want to hear about what people think about these two skis.
The Bibby would be the 186cm, and the One Life will be the 189cm. Both skis seem like they can handle anything.

Those are two really good skis to compare. I personally would go with One Life's for a few reasons. (1) I've never skied moment, so I am biased (2) the One Life's are cheaper (3) I believe 3-stage rocker is more versatile than traditional rocker (4) the One Life looks cooler (5) I like the construction of the ski better than Bibby's (6) they are stiffer, and I like stiff skis. ive got ll2s and they are the same as the one life and i must say. ive skied em twice so far. This season, loveland opening weekend and this past saturday. Man made groomers. They were awesome. it  takes getting used to but after a few runs i felt like i could rip on these. now let me say that they dont ski like cambered park skis but they will rip on groomers. due to the 3 stage rocker you have alot more ski in contact with snow meaning you can get alot more edge hold. Not to mention the one lifes are absurdly light. I cant testify to the powder shredding ability but i hope this can clear up some thoughts you might have on there off pow performance.

Ok, well it seems like you guys have skied the LL2's, and I never made that connection that its the same ski as the one life. Now I know that Surface is marketing the One Life as the everything ski, and their flex meter is at 70% for stiffness. Which I like! I went back and did the reasearch on the LL2's. Everything says its around 50% softer than the original LL's. What's would you guys say the comparison, flex wise, is to other skis. Examples would be awesome. Perfect flex I've skied on is the Line Blend 183, is it like that?

To the first person that responded. Your points were exact. I've heard nothing but honest and positive reviews from people who have skied Surface. Moment on the other hand, I'm going out on a limb there with them. Surface does have that price point, but the extra 25 bones won't kill me. Right now, I'm at 75:25 for Surface:Moment.

I haven't skied my ll2s yet and I am getting some moments. I haven't skied either but I can honestly say that I have never heard anything less than glowing reviews for either companies. So I think either way you'll be golden

I got ll2's half way through last season.. 3 stage rocker absolutely kills it..they were going to be my pow only ski..then I rode like one lap in the park..and never went back, I they feel lighter than my park ski too..They are super fun everywhere, and really floaty and fun in the pow. I haven't ridden moment though, they defiantly look good too.

I'd look at the 190 bibbys.  They be stiffer and more of a Mason ski.

and Moments are fuckin bomb proof, i can tell you that.

I could imagine so, Have you skied the Bibby's in either size? I'd also like to know how big the rocker is in either of them. I've seen the Surfaces and I like the rocker they have.

the rocker in the Bibbys is quite a bit smaller than the One Life, far less pronounced
But like most people have said both companies are awesome and I have heard really great things about both skis, I have Bibbys though I've yet to ride them but had I not got such a good deal on them I probably would have snatched a pair of One Lifes

When the 190 is decambered, the tip starts 42cm from the tip and 32cm from the tail (take about 4cm off each number for when the ski's relaxed).

I have only skied the 186.  It was a fun ski for sure, it's not really a charging ski though, more on the softer playful side.  The 190 on the other hand I have heard is much more of a charging ski with the camber and stiffer flex, but still retains its pivoting capabilities through rocker and slight taper.

Knowing you, I would say 190 Bibby.

i ended up trying to decide between these two skis too.

i went with the bibby cause i wanted a more "playful" ski

Whats the flex like? compared to some other ski out there? Anything like that Comi? I love that flex

190 bibbys have 7.25cm tip rise when not de-cambered, my LL2s have about 6.5cm tip rise.  The LL2 tip rise goes a few cm farther into the ski and is straighter(probably slices through chop great).  The bibby tail rocker is sharper and shorter.  190 Bibbys would be a better all around and powder ski than 186 bibbys in my opinion...  Comparing LL2s and Bibbys is going to be hard, my guess is that Bibbys are snappier from the camber and rocker shape...but no idea which is better.  SUrface from my experience has great customer service, I've heard the same for Moment.  Lastly, One Lifes are cheaper than Bibbys if that matters, so if you can't decide and like extra money than maby that's your decider.

As much as the 190 sounds like the perfect powder ski.... This is my everything ski, and Kicking Horse does have its drought spells...And this is why I'm going to want a ski that can face these drought spells and still be playful enough to mess around the hill.. This is why I want a playful flexed ski that can still charge it when it comes to the ever so lovely powder days.

If it makes any sense to anyone, I'm skiing practically everyday this year, gotta love no school.

I Skied the Bibby's (1styr) last season and they Were awesome, they did everything from charging to Jibbing, they feel like a big surfy ski in the pow but they still had great edge control when it was firm. they drifted on the Ice but it was easy to mob, one of the best days I had was on icy days mobbing around going as fast as possible sideways and drifting around everything. This season has some camber so I'd imagine It would be different. I've decided on getting some night trains as a repacement ski the Bibbys.

I have ridden just about every rockered ski on the market and can honestly say the surface LL2/one life was my favorite i chose them because of the three stage rocker i wanted something different and am sooo glad i went that way!

Amazing float and control in soft snow
stiff enough to still charge crud and chopped snow
REALLY light the 189 feels so much smaller
and i realy like the way the rocker feels to me its almost like a skate deck on snow you can really load up and POP of the tip's and tails"
i rode mine over 100 days last year in every condition but ice and dont have a single complaint!

Flex is stiff underfoot and medium-ish in the tip and tail. Definitely no noodle, but also not something a 160lb expert would have trouble controlling. The 190 is still plenty playful such that you can slash your turns with ease and slide sideways faster than most can with their skis pointed downhill. Regarding comparison to the Comi, I've only been on the first production model (3 years ago) and the stiff 08/09 version so I can't really offer an opinion. For what it's worth, I spent the other weekend at Loveland skiing groomers on the 190 and had no trouble on them. Flex on the tail is just soft enough to help you engage/disengage your turns rather easily.

i aggree. i have one lifes and they are super light, can handle just about anything and are surprisingly playful for a stiffer ski.  they are also the bomb to charge on.

Good choice, 190 Bibbys I am guessing would be a much more fun one ski quiver than 186 Bibbys.  Tha stiffer cambered part should do good on groomers, stiffer(than 186 I think) flex will be better in crud and pretty much anywhere..and rocker will make them easy to turn in any conditions.  oh and 190 isn't very long anyways.  I can't wait to ski my LL2s, but damn these look fucking amazing too.  If they made a 197ish Bibby I would have gotten it for my fatty charger tourer.

They won't feel huge at all. the running surface of the 190 is only 152cm... She'll feel short.

When I gave it thought, I looked back at the last season, there was no jibbin, I don't do jumps much often. The One Lifes and Bibbys @ 186 are both marketed as jibbing skis. Kicking Horse has powder, steeps, chutes, cliffs and some secret spots with here and there with little hits. Thats where I was sold on the 190's. Gotta love Big Mountain over Powder Jibbing

WIN.  And yeah, short running length plus a directional all mountain/charger/pow ski(I know these can ski switch great though) in general shouldn't really be under 190 for good skiers IMO anyways.  My 195 333s are somewhat like these, but with a straighter rocker with a bit less rise, and a lot less tail rocker, and it's tapered.

You're lucky you get kicking horse.  That was where my trip would most likely have been this year if my parents didn't blow all our money on my brothers rehab.  REHABS FOR QUITTERS!  still hoping for a weekend in a cheap hotel though..

Mason, it sounds like you need more than one ski.
Jeff's right, 190 Bibby and add in something like a Blend again.

ah, here's the kicker. My blends probablly won't last the season. Luckily I can get a pair of blends or something like that used from the shop in Lake Louise.

And I forgot about the new Live Life people pointed out.. holy sidecut!  but that's another good one most likely.  The straight(ish) rocker they have should be nice.  Anybody got a review to compare to the Bibby 190's good reviews?

I'm not a fan of the One Life rocker, it looks like I would get on top of their nose, and snap them.

Anyone know the turning radius of the Live Life? or running surface?
It seems that as much as I want a ski around 112mm in the waist, I'm not going to be satisfied. So I might as well move on to something bigger. The Bibby at 190 is still what I'm looking for. If I can find out more info on the Live Life, since I can't find that much on the websites.

you wont. the tip rocker is the best part of the ski. Ive also emailed surface a few times about turning radius and running surface of the Live Life because i want to get some for my dad, still haven't got back to me so keep trying...

Bibby at 190: 143-118-134 Radius: 26.7m

Live Life at 191: 152-120-135 Radius (at 181 sorry i don't have 191) : 20.5m, so the 191 will probably be about 24m (this is an (un)educated guess. Running length i don't know for the Live Life. I know the One Life is 100cm at 189. The Live Life has a regular twin tail, and so add approx 40cm to that gives in the ballpark of 140cm. Effective edge will be fairly long given the mellow-ish rocker profile, longer than the Bibby, which has tail rocker. This isn't accurate info but I hope it helps give you an idea at least, both are gonna be great skis for sure. I'd imagine that the LL will be more stable for charging, while the Bibby even in 190 will be easier to slash turns, depends what you are looking for.

First off, I can`t thank all of you enough, this is an amazing thread and the responses are amazing and very informational..

Twigski, thank you for your educated guesses, they make sense for me. The running surface of the One Life kind of cancles the ski out for me, thats a bit to much rocker, I almost want to say stupid rocker based on the pictures, but it seems to be working for some people.. I`m still more sold on the Bibbys at 190cm. I`ll give it acouple more days of thought though since I still need to come up with the money.
So I will continue to use this thread and its informational value to make my desicion.

This was a solid guess however the Surface Live Life DOES have rocker in the tail! it is not nearly as abrubt as the one life so it will have a lot more effective edge!

I've got the Live Life's in a 191 and it has become my favorite ski and I have a bunch... Huge Trubs, Double Helix, Praxis Pow Rx, LL2's, MSP's, High Society Freerides, Hellbents and ON3P billies on the way. I've also demoed the S7's. I haven't had them out in pow yet though, super easy to ski and decent edge hold on harder conditions.

I bought the One Life LAE Jeff Brown at 189cm.
Love them, nice and stiff, perfect waist, can hold an edge on groomers and crap. Only downside is the soft bases. Gouged them good

Damn, I realized they weren't the same material as the bulletproof 09 LL2s but was hoping they would be just as durable.  Oh well, I get to ski my One Lifes this weekend, and I'm thinking they are a much better ski than LL2s for all around(being stiffer, a little camber, better sidewalls, slightly improved rocker).  Where'd you mount?  I'm .5 past the "boot center" line, which should put me at -2 of true center.

yea, its stiffer and everything.no chatter, top sheets chip a bit. I got mine -2 from center. perfect.


Prepare for a BOMBARDMENT of comments on the skis, I was just in Rossland, 60+ comments and questions about the skis, 30+ in Kicking Horse, 10+ in Whitewater today.

Hah, I was just on them yesterday.  Mine are at -2 too, and I love them there, but I'll probably recommend to everybody that they mount at the recommended mark(-2.5) since this year Surface has that mark meaning something(center of running surface or -1 of it or somethin).

And they were great, lots of cliffs and pillows and open pow fields with plenty of snow covered trees and wind knolly stuff, and on some of the billy-goating type stuff they are much easier than 202 Lotus 138s(and all around, these take less effort to ski).  Obviously on some cliffs I would want 10cm more tip(but..the past 3 pow days before this I've been on 202s mounted at -14) but they are great for what I wanted them for(everything on a day with any decent conditions somewhere).

You're right, 9/10 of chairs I get asked.  The people who seem to like them most here(stevens pass) seem to be lifties and patrollers.  At the end of the day I was dropping through the park to get to the car and some guy yells "look at that guys skis!" to his kid as I was skiing to the first hit.

Me and a friend were out one day, me and my LL2's and him on his Hellbents and I got sooooo many double takes it was ridiculous.  Not a lot of comments, just lots of stares, points and double takes.  It was kinda awesome.

Moments have ridiculousy good construction, so beastly. I've never ridden Bibby's, but I have a pair of Donner Parties and I've ridden Night Trains.

Personally, I would choose the Bibby Pros.
