america is a great country, granted that it has some problems, some big ones at that. but every country has problems, and overall i think the us has done a good job in its short history making it the best place it can be.
as far as the war on terror goes, you canadians should imagine how you would feel if 9/11 had happened in your country. over 1,000 of my countrymen were killed in cold blood because some lunatics disagree with the way i live. how are we supposed to solve that without force, kamikaze? i really don't see a feasible way of changing al-queda's minds. changing france's mind, yes, but not al-queda, because their hatred is rooted in their extreme religious beliefs that conflict with ours. all we can do is build up our defense and try to take down their numbers and make them fear us, if that's possible. im not so sure iraq was the best way to do that, but afghanistan sure as shit was, and millions of people achieved greater freedom because of those wars either way.
that being said, i want to be in the cult, SUpilot.

if you're going to play the 911 card like every other conservative in the fall election, go ahead, but its such a pathetic argument. its like the secretary of ed. calling teachers terrorists. democrats felt probably more compassion and sorrow on 911 than any conservative out there. it was the democrats who were in the streets donating blood and supplies, while the conservatives bought stock in american flag companies. dubs a scrub, and the shits gunna hit the fan when america realizes that he has no substance.

^Probably not, but you just made his point... it's fairly obvious that you'll find more bleeding-heart sympathy-toters among liberals than republicans. The latter's platform being founded on the proposition of increased wealth (not that I have a problem with having more money...). The bland, factual, unemotional approach you adopt by asking for 'data' is completely reasonable, but it just goes to show...killy's right, although he doesn't really have a point; you'd have to look beyond the 911 scenario to what it's being used for in this election: the prospect of further attacks, and the need for defense. Basically, vote for me or you'll get killed...fear politics.

Oh, and Atlantaski, I'm putting you on a limit of 1 entry into the hall of fame... you could fill the damn thing up all by yourself. FYI, they're Inuit, not eskimos, and they comprise the vast minority of Canadian population. It may surprise you to know we don't all live in igloos, either...

Strange as it may seem to you of the 'America is the best at everything' mindset, the educational standards up here are just a bit higher, and there are actually people who have a clue what they're talking about to the same extent that you do (and further). It doesn't matter what the democrats would do, they're going to lose, and Bush maintains power by the following means:

'There were people who attacked. I counterattacked and won. Then I attacked another country, so I'm obviously willing to do more than just react to attacks, I'm going to take the initiative. There are other people who want to attack us. Better elect me, or they might kill you or someone you know!'

That's fear politics. Whether it's justified is a totally different argument.

To Me, Liberal-minded people are all about helping others, especially those in other countries, right? Didn't we help the INNOCENT people in Iraq by ousting an evil man who demanded crime on the streets and terror and torture to his own people? We are also building schools and teaching them skills to get back on their feet, isn't THAT help? You can't show up in Iraq with a couple of friends and bang on peace drums and expect to help anyone by handing them pamphlets, that's not rational. It takes an Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines, different countries play an important role and so do their armies. You can't fight fire without water, or you're going to get burned and let's face it, your way wasn't working... so in we went and we are accomplishing a lot there. The Iraqi people adore our soldiers and thank America and George W. Bush. What exactly is the point, rich people make their own money... than the crack heads without jobs and with about 8 kids are getting the rich peoples money from taxes... makes sense right?

In theory, your proposition sounds good, SuPilot...in practice, the costs might end up outweighing the potential benefits. And 'helping people' has nothing to do with liberalism. But I don't have time to go through Mill, Locke, dewey, bernstein, and a bunch of other people in this thread. I'll post it all in the DL sometime, and somewhere in NSG, it should help clear up a lot of this debate. You'd be surprised how many people hating on those 'God Damn Liberals' actually have a lot of liberal principles.

well heck i'm a conservative, but i still worry about cost as a secondary and sanctity of life as a primary. (strap on your skin) if you had two neurons to rub together then you would know that liberalism has MUCH to do with helping people. that makes absolutely no sense to say that it doesnt. even liberals will agree with me here.

kami...personal opinions are personal opinions. i feel safer with ashcroft and bush than i do with saddam and osama. i sense perhaps you were being sarcastic, right?

^No, no it doesn't. You have no idea what liberalism, or for that matter conservatism, is all about. you just associate witha particular end of the political ideological spectrum.

Liberalism associates liberty with primacy in human nature. Thus, the onus of power rests on the individual, while the government should do whatever it can to promote liberty, and no more. There's locke's state of nature and war. and mill's harm principle, and progressive theory (Dewey) that fit in there too, but that's a lot of writing to explain.

Conservatism emphasizes the primacy of human ignorance and fallibility, assuming since we're going to screw up inevitably, screw ups should have the least negative impact possible. Therefore, we should organize power into smaller enclaves; businesses, families, churches, and so on. Government, then, should promote the interests of these small groups.

Those are the bases of the two schools of thought. There's a lot more to go along with each, but like I said, I'm not going to explain it all. Suffice it to say that liberalism has nothing to o with 'helping people', at least not directly interpreted, thoguh that sort of thing could result.

By definition, helping people has shit all to do with liberalism or conservatism. Just because they coincide, or follow according to some interpretations, doesn't mean that helping people is a part of either doctrine. That's like saying having a teaching career is a part of liberalism because a lot of liberals think they can better the population by teaching. I say it again: just because you can associate one thing with another in certain examples does not mean one necessarily follows from the other. Horribly fallacious reasoning.

In 'The real world' (wherever these stats are coming from) people want to help others? Well DUH. No, I thought everyone was going around wishing they could have everyone else killed! Because that made more sense. Thanks for pointing out the obvious. That's not the point. The point is, wanting to help others does not make one either liberal or conservative.

All I was initially saying was that you can't associate ideologies with political groups without knowing the tenets of the ideologies involved. And you don't. You completely misdefined the very thing you were arguing against, and then tried to rationalize your mistake with circumstance. How very Bush-like. Summarily, you really don't have any business arguing about what you don't understand with people who do understand, because you're making a fool out of yourself in their eyes. But if you want to go ahead, then do so.

If there's one thing I've learned about you, it's that you always have the last word; you're like an angered bull, you won't back down no matter how weak your position is (among other similarities). Another thing I've noticed is that on these forums, people think the guy with the last word won the argument.So you're doing pretty well for yourself, as long as you don't ask the academics.

I don't have a problem with your position, in fact, they're usually defensible, but for God's sake, just once could you state it in some way that has some kind of logical progression?

Another reason for the ''Political quiz on every voting ballot to weed out the ignorant people'' idea...

And I'm saying they have nothing to do with each other necessarily, they just happen to coincide because a lot of people tend to like helping people. A lot of liberals do, a lot of conservatives do. So there's really no point in associating the two. It's basically an argument that you can't win in theory...but you've abandoned that objective theoretical view for a ''real world'' perspective, where this isn't even an argument; Of course many liberals like helping people. But it isn't limited to them, and therefore you can't say 'helping people' is a necessary subset of liberalism any more than it is of anyone else. If you can argue with that, then the conservatives and socialists, the major alternatives, are somewhat inhumane.

If you'er making a historical association, then I agree. Over time, liberals have been far more humane. They don't have to be, though; you can be a humane conservative. There's nothing in the conservative manifesto, as it were, that says otherwise. Isn't a more humane approach better?

wouldnt it be great if america took their hands out of every, country, market or comodity that they are dippeing their hands into and pulled back into the states to live solely dependant on themselves. Build massive walls around the entire border and not allow anyone to enter or leave the country...become a totally self sufficent country...imagine how fuckin sweet it would be to not have to deal with any stupid americans anymore...That would probably solve the whole terrorism isuue. Anytime an american comes in contact with some other country in trade, politics, travel, they end up saying or acting stupid thus the world hates them. Maybe if the americans just stayed in their own country and never left the world would be a better place...no one would have a reason to hate them. Food for thought.

OI american who is talking about ww2 you obviously dont know shit. although the americans were a good help, their help would have been useless if it wasnt for the russians. If the germans hadnt been busy dying with no winter equipment on the eastern front then they would have easily overpowered a few shitty tanks. but conviniently nobody talked about this after because those fucking soviets were commie bastards. they couldn't have helped.
