Sweden introduces carbon footprint label on food products

Sweden just introduced a system in which food products will not only have nutritional information on them, but will also have a carbon footprint label, which will show the carbon emissions produced by that item.

I think this is definitely a step in the right direction, Sweden seems to be doing a pretty good job of it recently, introducing a "congestion charge" in August of 2007.

I am tired, and going to bed so I didn't read the link.  WHY does FOOD need a carbon footprint label?  For the gas that is expelled when people fart, burp, or shit?  Or is the footprint coming from what it takes to make it?

I'll give this a good read when I'm not fucking shittered. Global warming is a big deal so I thnk is sounds like a good idea. I'll watch the lingk later though.

No, I figure it is coming from the pollution created when they process and make it but it just seems strange that they will need to put the carbon footprint info on a bag of Doritos.  The bag could quite honestly create a bigger footprint in the process of making the bag than the making of the chips in it.


I am still tired as fuck.  Midterms this week, haven't had a full night sleep in like 4 days.  Been on average 3 hours a night.

Ah, I see.

Yea I would assume its from transportation. It would help for the more simple stuff, but I agree on what you said about packaging and what not. In reality, its impossible to track the carbon footprint of anything really, since you can go forever counting the stuff the truck transporting it's made of, how that material was transported, etc.

Its a step though, and every bit counts.

I hope all that studying pays off, good luck on your midterms.

Shouldn't be much since it'll be added on to the already existing nutritional label; they're not making another individual label to stick on the products.

It takes people time and a process to calculate the carbon footprint, these people eat processed food which causes pollution.  Yes, I am trying to connect everything in a really REALLY long shot.

I like the idea for sure, i'm just not positive about the effect it will make.  Doesn't hurt to try.  Bottom line is we need to find ways to limit our impact.  Once we decide to stop being so fat that will help in a lot of ways.

well you can like whatever the hell you want,  just don't feel obligated to down 10 burgers a day.  moderation is key, although since you're turning 21 i shouldn't be speaking to you of moderation. (where'd your bday thread go?)

and as for the Australian's comment above, you can't tell them anything.  I've never trusted any of those convicts.
