Why are you guys so mean to us?

Just a question. I mean look we take tons of feedback and work our balls off to implement as many suggestions as is humanly possible.

So why then, do so many people feel that instead of making suggestions they need to make threads blatantly hating on us and telling us how shitty we are?

You can suggest things without being negative. Why so much hate when hidden by an alias?

We're completely open to discussion, and 100% can and do make changes for you guys.

Do your best to keep it mature and intelligent.

its because everyone on this site is now under the age of 16 and nothing matters to them but themselves so hating is natural.

i love how the site has progressed over the years. but the youngins are really making it hard for me to take ns serious and enjoy it like I used too, its making me not want to come on here anymore.

Seriously... people if you are nice its a lot easier to listen and a lot more motivation to do what you say.

Also there's a lot of people that think their opinion is the be all end all. Take the new logo... sure there's haters out there but there are a TON of people that love it. People think they are in graphic design school and that makes them an expert... well there's people in graphic design school who love it too.

There's opinions on everything out there, and especially different ones.

I just wish that people would take three seconds when they post to read over and say "am I being a complete fuckwad?"

Do people think they have a better chance of getting changes made if they insult us and say we don't do our jobs properly?

So much of the world thinks of NS as a bunch of immature children. We aren't that - we are the new movement in skiing.

We should prove to people that we're not just a bunch of stupid kids.

that unfortunately is the case with pretty much everything visual though. Thats what makes it tough for us designers.. I hate having to appease everyone at my job, and thats to people 30+ years old. I couldnt imagine pleasing Johnny High school who downloaded adobe photoshop off pirate bay.

Im definitely here to improve the sites form and function.. i even offered to help with some of the graphics, that too me, are blurry and could be cleaned up some for readability.

one suggestion i have and believe would help the site is to shorten the "Online" list by creating a fixed height div and setting overflow to scroll. I noticed how long it was when i took a screen shot of the whole window and it was huge because of that.

let me know if there is anything i can help with.

I agree with you that age is not an excuse, if this new upgrade would have come out 3 years ago when skiing was still all about fun to a lot of kids then I am sure the hate would not be here. But now there are so many kids on this site trying to be the next big thing and forgetting why we all ski, because we love it and because its the most fun thing in the world to do regardless on what you dress and ski like.

But now I feel like all these kids are hiding behind the screen of there computer and do not care what they are saying, because it is just a website. The majority of this site are young kids, and young kids do not care about what they say because they are young.

All the people who run this site are amazing and incredibly talented, but when your young you do not realize that. I think that many kids just do not care and only post on this site to get a high post count and karma...

I think if this site and the people on it want to be respected you should reach out to an older crowd of people and different groups in the action sport industry and maybe then the world will not think of nsers as a bunch of young inmmature kids. Because that is mostly what this site is made up of, young immature kids who are so obbsessed with pro skiers and becoming the next Tom.

I do not hate Ns, but I do not like what has become of this site. I miss how it was 3-4 years ago. I know it will never go back to how it was. I love all the new upgrades and how the site has changed cosmetically its amazing how far its come since the beggining. But the age group on this site is why I hardly ever post anymore or sign in...

The hate comes from the new kids, and there's nothing that can change that.

Because some people think they are cool behind their little e-wall and will hate on anything because they think they are "cool" by trying to piss people off.

I still don't understand how someone can just blantanly hate on something with no reason except to just hate or because they feel like pissing people off. And I agree it mostly is the new members (not saying I am an old member or anything) but still most of the people who joined during the summer seem like they have the intelligence of a 4 year old and think NS is the new 4chan or some shit.

I dunno about other people but I mostly see myself wanting to kill a baby whenever I read a idiotic thread by someone with 4posts who has been a member for a week making a thread called "lulz y r womun on a skiin sit shuldnt dey be in ta kitken???!?!? lulzzzz"

Sorry for double post but yes I completely agree with this...Even though everyone I have met from NS are probably the coolest and nicest people ever which is awesome. But some people love to talk shit when no one knows who they are.

I have only met a few Nsers, besides the group of people i ride with.

One of those kids tried to kill my friend with an ax becasue of something he said on NS.

I think there are many people who take everything on this site WAY to serious. First of all skiing has never been serious, look back at the 70s 80s and 90s. It was all about having fun with friends, doing stupid things that may get you in an awesome amount of trouble drinking beers slaying pow doing backflips and drinking beer.

Now its all about NS, I feel as if this site has litterly taken over and molded skiing, not saying its a bad thing, but in many ways this site has brought on a TON of posers and changed the entire aspect of skiing. It has also brought up some insane amount of talent, a great place to communicate with fellow athletes and get the insight on whats going on. Litterly because of NS someone completly unknown can become a pro overnight. Theres good and bad to this site.

There was a entire thread on what happened to us at mt hood this summer. your hating in a thread thats all about not hating.

My friend called someone a cunt on ns, we met that kid while camping, they thought it was funny to come to our campsite screaming murder with a huge ax and chase us down in our van as we were driving off.

I really appreciate everything you guys do. It seems like you guys work pretty hard to keep NS legit and I respect that. Hell, look at how much power NS has on the freeskiing community now. It's not as small as it used to be (good or bad) and I think you guys owe yourselves a pat on the back. The ONLY tweak I have with you guys (the admins) is the new logo and not really listening to anyone who doesn't like it. All you guys have said is "oh well, it's not changing." Other then that, great work, and keep it up!

I don't think it has anything to do with age, it just has to do with size. NS has grown to be such a huge forum that the community isn't as tight-knit as it was five years ago. People forget that NS isn't a giant internet company; it isn't run by rich people wearing suits on committees who don't care about anything except the bottom dollar.

I agree. I'm 15, and joined a few months ago. I'm no hater, and there's always things on here remind me that NS really is an amazing thing. The odds against such a small web site run by normal people growing so huge and not bought out are enormous. Thank god for NS

well there are a ton of us who really appreciate everything that you guys do. It sounds silly but many of us consider this to be much more than just a website, myself included.

Thanks for all your hard work, and i'm sorry that certain members have to be assholes.

The biggest problem is the anonymity of the internet.  It allows people to create a virtual self that they turn into the person they wish they were.  There's a lot of kids on this site that are probably extremely passive in real life and choose to compensate for it by coming on here and acting like the big tough boss and hating on everything.  It makes them feel powerful.

I've only been around on here for about 4 months but it isn't hard to see that the admins and mods get very little respect for the often thankless job that they do.  I love the changes to the site and I think as people get used to it the hate will calm down.  Keep up the good work and in my opinion swing the ban hammer as often as you like.  The people you might alienate contribute nothing and wont be missed.

I just have to say to Bishop, I am EXTREMELY impressed with this site. Being a snowboarder that found this site only a couple years ago, I spend a ton of time on here and really enjoy it. Being an "older" member at 25, I can definitely see the immaturity from a lot of people. I guess one thing that I have been SO close to doing (and this might sound extreme) but getting ahold of the parents of some of these kids and let them know what their kid is acting like on the internet, and the stuff they're saying. I've gone as far as finding the names of parents, but never said anything. With kids throwing around emails, photos, and personal info, it's pretty easy to do a background on someone. I just think it would help calm this place down if word got around that parents are finding out that little Jimmy is acting like an "internet thug". Especially in the privileged, white collar, middle class world that skiing is.

I'm a relatively new member of NS with just over a year and a half under my belt, and also being 16, in the "younging's" category...

But at the same time I feel like I've contributed a ton in my own way, and have done my part to keep the immaturity to a minimum. I think in the internet day and age we live in today, we should act almost the same or better than how we do in our physical lives. More and more people are realizing this, and we're starting to get over the initial excitement of anonymity of the internet. It'll take some time for everyone to realize this, but I think we'll get there eventually.

Hate is hate is hate. You know how it is. Whenever you do something new, someone will have a problem. You can't let that shit get to you, cause it is going to happen regardless. Noone cares about your hardwork as much as you, and they don't realize how much time and effort you put into something they shit on. This website is like a super god magnet for asshole trolls, not only is the website big with lots of new members added daily, but most of them are young spoiled dicks who have no idea what they are talking about.

I personally love all the changes, fuck everyone else. Go Bishop.

Let me also add, since new members are joining at a growing rate, can't you put like a idiot block on posting threads? Like you can't post a thread within your first two weeks on NS. Maybe add a spelling and grammar test when you go to create a thread?

there's always a few things about the site that i won't be a huge fan of, but i always figure....oh well, i'll survive. Afterall, we could all get pissed about it, and you guys could just tell us to fuck off and shut down. (doubt you guys would ever willingly shut down though)

if there's one thing i've learned, its don't hate on the mods/creators being that they completely control us.


as for the age thing, its quite strange actually, because when i join in 2005, i felt like everyone on here was older than me (i was 15) so i did my best to just stay in line, and not do anything to single me out. But now, it feels like i'm older than everyone. My question is how does the average age of ns'ers stay around 16? What happened to the rest who joined with me for example, do more kids around 16 join every year than any other age?


well, in any case, i love this site, and this update/redesign is fantastic. NS has come a long way just since 05 when i first started taking notice of what goes on here.

everyone feels entitled to NS, even though it's a privledge to have one website that encapsulates the entire freeskiing industry/community. Thats what they call our generation, "The Entitlement Generation", but with today's job market and the way the future is going, we'll wake up.

based on the maturity of most teens in the world today, i am fine with seeing hate on videos and pictures from other members but hating on NS in general? Thats just fucked up. Especially hating on the new layout or the creators of this site. this is a free site that brings together so many of us that have the same interest in freeskiing. if you hate the ads, get adblock plus. if you hate the new layout (and i dont see why you would) make a suggestion to bishop or in the site discussion forum on what you do and dont like. or, you could just think about how many hours of labor went into designing all the new features and the new layout of this site and realize that it is pointless for you to hate something that you have for free.

To be honest here. And I know I'm not the most active person on the site, nor have I made a name for myself on this site for someone to give a shit what I do.

But when I read peoples posts, I know who's mature, and with that I make the assumption that they are over 18 and know whats going on. I am going to say though, that probabbly from April till last week, I avoided this place. I hate the idea that I think of the newschooling community as these little rich kids from the city who all think smoking dope or sheesha or what ever is cool. Or the kids that all ride the Band wagon. I've met people from this site, and they are amazing people. I'm putting faith back into this site, I'm ignoring the threads that dont appeal to me or seem contreversal. I have nothing to prove on this website...

Don't let me down NS.

And to the administraters. I love the new design of the site. I can't imagine the stress you deal with the keep something like NS running.

oh....  and Doug...  written in my notes (you know where that is) from years ago (maybe 4?) it still applies today, I felt this excerpt about online personas,  be it "right" or wrong identifies the reason for what you are apparently hurting from.

read on:

People are much more comfortable shelling out the criticism from the safety of of their online identity rather than taking the time to put together a well constructed letter that includes name and contact info so as to give the representative a chance to respond. However, the respectul and proper thing to do is usually the hardest/most time consuming, therefore is the least popular.

I think a lot of people come to these boards because they want to feel like their opinion of "that rail/snowmaking/comp/UPGRADE sucked" will be respected by others like them. In actuality, it really does nothing except give you a medium through which to vent in the immediate aftermath of your good/bad experience, which in the long run only has a negative effect such as a company or mountain rep no longer posting due to the barrage of immature flaming............. If more people took 10 minutes to write respectful posts and help censor each other we'd probably see the board grow into a forum of much more credible information -

Don't fall into the trap - keep the faith.
