No, it's not hunting based. I'm pretty sure it may have something to do the Winter War between The Soviet Union and Finland in 1939. The Soviets, allied with the Nazie, rolled into Finland with tanks and infantry to take the country, and the Finns kicked major ass on skis. I am pretty sure the Finns used ski-based infantry before anyone else in this war. Anyway, the tenth mountain division in the US was formed after hearing about how awesome the Finns fought on skis. This biathalon shit could be a training technique the Finns and other countries used to keep their winter forces ready for battle. It could also be a celebration of Finland standing up to the Russkies.
hahah sometimes I pretend to do so when I bomb groomers. It appears, after doing a little research, the biathalon started as a training regimen for Norwegian soldiers in the late 1800s. People there formed ski and rifle clubs to promote national defense. Pretty badass.
