i have been having the same problem, i have narrowed down my 4 choices to the canon Gl2, the Panasonic DVX100 or either the Sony VX-2100 or the Sony PD-170, all are solid choices. i will prob end up going with the VX21k cuz it has amazing low light and i do a lot of filming off season and it always seems to get dark to quick, i have personally used all 4 cameras and have no complaints about the,. the PD 170 and the DVX have XLR audio inputs so if you are looking to record professional level sound, i wold aim for these cameras, but if you are strictly making edits and are not in need of super high quality audio, then the gl2 and the vx21k are cheaper alternatives that offer about the same picture quality.
hope this helps
