Radar Detectors

Already searched and looked through a few threads that were a year or older.

Just wanted to see what everyone has right now and how they like the one they have. Im looking to get one and i wanted some opinions on one thats in the 300 dollar range. Thanks for the help.

What is the cheapest undetectable radar detector?

I want to get one, but only for my motorcycle...so I don't want to spend $600 if I can get away with spending >300...

Also, does anyone know if there's a source that you can tap into, to run a light to the dash? Radar detectors are damned illegal here, so a little led on the dash would be best...

V1 or don't waste your time.

You also still need to be halfway intelligent about speeding too. Most speed traps are setup with lasers which only set-off your detector once you've been tagged.

While they are nice to have, I wouldnt suggest spending to much on them, especially if you live in a urban area as many police forces are moving to lasers which unfortunately, do not get detected by a radar detector.

i travel long distances a lot, i have never gotten a ticket while using the passport 9500i. its worth the money. you can get one off the internet or used for under 400 im sure.

well they do get detected by them, but lasers are so fast that they already have a fix on you by the time your detector goes off. basically, if you're speeding and you get a laser alert, you're screwed.

a laser beam is also far, far narrower than a radar gun so there is next to no chance of your detector picking up scatter from someone else getting speed checked.

I hardly use my detector at all now I just stick to under 115 and there's little chance of getting pulled over anyway

Jammers are usually illegal, check your local laws before picking one up.
Radar detectors are illegal in a few states as well, so also check on that. (Such BS, all they do is report certain electromagnetic frequencies, they don't tamper with them.)

Anyway, look into the Escort line, they're pretty sweet. I have an old Cobra at the moment. It works decently, but is nothing amazing. Also learn how to use them, when to slow down anyway, how the different bands work, all of that stuff. Don't expect to buy one and be safe right off the bat, or to ever be truly safe, but if you're smart about it then they can definitely be worthwhile.

Agreed, this is where just being a smart, vigilant driver comes into play.
I'm assuming you're talking about km/h in which case I would agree that staying around or under the 70mph mark likely won't get you pulled over.

Oh, and randomly it will pick up train signals and emergency signals from ambulances, which I suppose is convenient so you know when either one of those is somewhere near.

Also, around town or in a city you will pick up so much more than just speed traps. Basically it could be a cop, or it could be a sliding door. Or a home security system. Or anything else. You get the idea.

Was looking at the 8500x50 and the 9500. Is the 9500 really that much better? My friend was teaching me about the different bands the other day on our 3 hour drive so I learned alot about them.

See this is where you've got me, I have no idea. My friend has an 8500 he bought used and it's worked out really well for him. I'd assume the 9500 would be better because it's a newer, but I have no idea how much better it is or if it justifies the price difference because I have zero experience with it.

Radar Jammers are illegal in all states due to FCC regs
Laser Jammers are legal in almost all states but if a cop ever finds out that you have one they'll be pissed
i'm also rocking an older cobra right now and while it works ok if i had the money I'd get an escort 9500 or a v1

go with a 9500, cheaping out on radar detectors is just a waste of hundreds of dollars, even from the 8500 to the 9500 i noticed a huge improvement.
if you want a jammer, i think they sell a jammer/9500 kit together. its over 1000 bucks. radar jammers dont work, laser jammers do, and pretty effectively. so if your safe from laser, and can detect radar, your pretty damn safe. and you can rig them up so the jammers are very well hidden, and have an on off switch, so right after you slow down to speed you can turn the jammer off, then they get a reading of you going the speed limit instead of staying on an error reading, then it doesnt look like you have a jammer. they are illegal in quite a few states, but you dont get in much trouble if you have one, a confiscation maybe a small fine if anything.

i know im an idiot but i got tagged goin ~140 in a 65 (nobody except my buddy on road and we were dragging) but an undercover pulled up next to me, looked at me, pulled behind me, then flew off the highway.. almost pissed my pants like 6 times.. but my jammer/detector didnt do shit for me there

radar jammers which dont work are illegal. laser jammers which do work are legal, but illegal in some states, and punishment for having one is next to nothing, and im pretty sure the 9500 is supposed to be better than the v1

I have this. Real cheap, like 80 bucks, but it gets the job done. You gotta realize it's not a failsafe, it's just a tool to help you a) not get pulled over and b) get out of it if you do get pulled over. ie if you get pulled over without the RD going off, and the cop says he radar'ed you, you can use that. If It does go off and you get pulled over, you know he had your exact speed and can change your strategy for talking your way out of it. That said, it has saved me more than once, making it worth it.
