with the exception of 1 or 2 posts in that forum I dont think there is anything wrong with what they are saying. they are saying that WME films have gone to shit over the years, and that Level 1 is more in touch with the ski community which is the exact same shit we have been saying. Shit, one guy even says his favorite movie is by TGR.
and i wouldnt really consider those guys gapers. yeah they aint rocking full tilts and G-Suits but if you look around their website they aint fucking around. heli trips, hucking cliffs in the alps, videos, geat talk.
heres what i posted on the gaper thread:
I'm blanking in the name but the same company that owns WME owns both SKI and SKIING magazines, so they can use his name.
Also, to all the people talking about everything wrong with freeskiing,
1 We are not foul mouthed little kids, the only people I yell/swear at are the idiots that have no idea what they are doin in the park, or people that poach lines on pow days. If you don't know what you're doin in the park, read the signs. They're there for a reason. If you're gonna hit a jump, call your drop. Don't cut the entire line waiting to hit the jump. Also, don't cut people off when they're dropping. It ruins the entire run for the person. And don't sit on landings. A guy at my mtn almost died cuz he was standing on a landing and was hit by a kid that couldn't see him. And if you're gonna drop for a jump, hit it. If you just roll over it it ruins the lip.
2 Everyone hatin on baggy clothes, stop. they trap more air which insulates better, and I personally think they are way more comfortable than a spyder suit.
3 Theres a much easier phrase than "flippy spinny things" to describe our type of skiing. Its called freestyle. And also, big mtn/back country skiing is included in freestyle, so everyone that loves a bluebird pow day should remember that you're in the same category as us. Also, "flippy spinny things" was one of the funniest gaper quotes I've ever heard.
4 I'd turn down a good day of park to hike for 2 hours and get just 1 pow run any day.
5 You should be happy for freestyle skiing. Its like art, you are allowed to be creative, unlike in racing, when you have a preset course and must strictly follow where the gates tell you to go. Also its progression. Although I dislike certain types of skiing, like olympic aerials, I accept them as progressing the sport and helping it reach a wider audience, which is good for the sport.
6 I'm a ski patroller. If you have a problem with me, then you have a problem with all of patrol.
7 Many of the greatest big mtn/back country segs I've seen have been in the so called "Hip, rude, and foul mouthed" movies. Shane McConkey's part in claim is one of my favorite of all time. He was a hero to all freeskiers and one of the most innovative skiers out there. RIP Shane. We miss you.
8 You might classify level 1 as one of theose "Hip, rude, and foul mouthed" production companies. Warren Miller is great friends with Josh Berman, the owner, so if you have a problem with level 1, you have a problem with Warren.
Read these statements from warren and josh
“I consider Josh my friend and I have been very impressed with his
efforts as a film maker, and more so as a human being. He is a very
nice young man, and I was honored to oblige his request to participate
in Refresh. I have been invigorated by working with his group, whose
passion for skiing matches my own. WME made clear to me long ago that they did not want me involved
in their films – so I’ve essentially cut all of my ties to them. I have
a legal and moral right to freely use my name, voice, and likeness as I
choose. By suing Josh, I feel that WME is challenging my rights as a
person and public figure. I will not stand by and let a young, talented
artist like Josh get shoved around by a group that, in my opinion, has
no genuine regard for the fans.”
-Warren MIller
JOSH BERMAN RESPONSE
“Since the lawsuit was filed, the support from every level of the ski
industry has been overwhelming. Skiing as a whole is a global but
tight-knit community, and it’s sincerely flattering to see so many
people rallying behind our cause. To have Warren personally file a
motion to intervene is a tremendous vote of confidence—it means a lot
to me personally to have his support.”
-Josh Berman
9 Since Warren sold the company, it has become a bunch of rich guys in suits trying to maximize profits. They don't care about skiing like many of the smaller companies do. Their recent films are a disgrace to skiing. I grew up on warren miller films and I can honestly say that what they've done to the company is just wrong. A skier who has filmed with WME posted on NS that almost all members of the film and editing crew had no idea what they were doing. They were rude and didn't allow him to ski how he wanted to.
Anyways, I hope this helps educate some of you as you seem to know nothing about freeskiing. We are not rude little brats, we are people who dedicate every waking moment of our lives to skiing. Many of the things that have been said in this thread are the reasons why we make fun of you. Just because you don't understand freesking doesn't mean you should hate us. Many of us ski 7 days a week from october to april, work the entire year to get enough money to spend a week skiing in the summer, and will drive 3 hours to an ice rink, just to get enough snow to hit a rail on a free day in the summer. I personally am a ski patroller, an ex racer and ex competetive mogul skiier, I'm willing to risk my life driving through some of the worst weather imaginable for hours, just to get first tracks in the pow the next day. I'm one of the first ones on the mtn, and one of the last off. And after the mountain closes, I'll grab a shovel and go hit a rail with my friends. We freeskiers live skiing. Its all we do.
And to all the "Purists" out there that think we are "contaminating" skiing, what do you even mean by purist? Most people I know that consider themselves "Purists" are really just weekend warriors, most of whom could't ski a mogul line, much less hit a jump. If you really wanna call yourself a skier, learn what its like to be a freeskier, or really, every type of skiier. I know what its like to race, to ride the park, to ski bumps, and to ski the pow. I've hiked tuckermans ravine and hit urban rails in the same day and I've saved lives on patrol. If you really wanna talk about us the way that you do, lean what we're really like. We freeskiersare some of the most dedicated skiiers out there and I'm proud to be one of us.

Second, If WME had not filed against Level 1, I'm not sure how many people 'out there' would have heard about Refresh who have been made aware of it because of this action. - There is no such thing as bad publicity? Level 1 just got a heapin bunch of publicity!
/facepalm
