Official RED Scarlet (video/still camera) Thread

So as many of you may know, RED is going to release all the info for the Scarlet and the Epic on Oct 30 2009. The press release will include pricing, release schedule, order info, accessories, etc...

I've found a great site that has up to the minute updates and threads all about the Scarlet:


It's a great site and the members are very helpful.


In case you don't know what the Scarlet is, here is some info in a nutshell:

- 4 different camera brains

1. fixed lens 2/3" sensor @ 3K 1-120 FPS price ~2500$
2. red mini, b4 or c mount 2/3" sensor @ 3K 1-120 FPS~2500$?
3. Nikon, PL, Canon, etc mount S35 sensor @ 5K 1-30 FPS ~5000$?
4. Nikon, PL, Canon, etc mount FF35 sensor @ 6K 1-30 FPS ~7000$?

THE RED SCARLET CAN ALSO BE USED AS A STILL CAMERA

There is also a shit ton of accessories, but, the estimated price for the Fixed Lens Kit is around 3750$. That's pretty damn good for a ready to film camera if you don't require amazing DOF.

I'm personally looking into getting the Nikon Mount with the 5K camera and accessories for a total of about $8K.

Let's use this thread as a discussion are for the camera and everyone's general thoughts on RED's very first PRO-Sumer camera packages.

The whole concept is real sick, but if you want to have an slr setup, it's gonna still cost a lot (correct me if im wrong). But shit, 120fps fixed lens at 3k? sounds pretty baller to me. We'll see if it's worth it, i mean 60fps is pretty slow already, i feel like i would rarely use 120, but the 3k could be nice, other than how much harddrive space it would take up. The single sensor thing is also kind of gettin at me but 2/3" is baller as fuck, altho 2/3" 3cmos/ccd would be even more baller.

When they announce the prices of everything, then we will know how legit it really is.

the sensors they use are their own Mysterium sensors, they go from 2/3" to 6x17cm...they are leaps and bounds ahead of cmos sensors

People think having 3 sensors is better, but not necessarily, 3CCD existed because of the need to channel the colors Red, Green and Blue through each of their own CCD...The introduction of the CMOS combined those colors into a pixel format (not necessarily better quality however) and it also made the cameras smaller and used less energy to save battery life, it also made them more affordable since cmos costs less to make, it also solved image lag issues

having 3 cmos chips, you can actually lose quality, especially in low light conditions, because you're splitting the light to the three sensors(if you make the sensors smaller)

RED has decided to focus on one sensor for their cameras...but it also happens to be the most bad ass sensor the camera world has seen!

imagine having 3 2/3" sensors, yes it would be baller, but the camera body would have to be 2-3 times the size

and after all, they are trying to mimic 35mm film to the max, so one sensor sounds like it makes the most sense right?

And yes, to mimic 35mm a single senor makes sense. It all sounds real sick and im stoked to see what prices are gonna be.

Excuse my ignorance, but could someone explain to me what this company does and how it works?

I get the impression that you buy all of the parts of your camera (SLR / Video) and put it together how you want? Looks very legit...

red is a new company created by the oakley guy and theyre trying to make cameras to rival film cameras. their cameras are modular design, meaning instead of buying one camera you buy each individual piece (probs in a package) so if you decide you want a bigger sensor, upgrade, you need a bigger drive, better display, audio, it all can be switched out.

so far theyve released only one camera, the red one. its a pretty narsty camera but just the body is 17000, plus all the other shit you need. its been used in a good number of recent films and tgr and i think one other company have one. basically a badass expensive camera

they plan on releasing two more cameras: the red scarlet and epic. the epic is for the same people who would buy a red one; its gonna be sick but probs out of anyone heres price range

the red scarlet is whats getting people really excited. for around the price of a 5d you get 3-5K video (hd is a little less than 2k i think) with 30-120fps. read above for more stats

I wouldn't sweat it too much, film making is more producing than anything else, the latest and greatest camera isn't going to make or break anything. Use what you have, it's better than what 99% of every production with your budget has ever used. That being said the camera seems sick, it's about time RED.

Unless you're a indepentent film maker, don't worry about it, the hvx will be a legit camera for years in the ski industry. A RED is overkill unless you are a professional company. And as an amature, unless you want 120fps, the RED will almost be too much for you anyway.

ya, im really not to worried about it at all. Nothing i'm working on and none of my clients would require anything that i would need the RED for. I mean, it would sure be fun to use, but I don't need it. I'm loving the hvx so far anyways.

The real question is do i put my next big investment into a 35 adapter and lenses, or just save up for a RED?

With And the scarlet dream continues.  I'm not holding my breath on the release.  I still think it's going to be a while until people can get their hands on these.  Unless RED has a killer production plan that can crank these things out, it's going to be a while until you see them popping up.

My whole take on the scarlet is this.  I see so many people saying "oh I gotta wait for the scarlet so I wont buy a camera until Scarlet comes out."  If you're holding off on buying a camera because you're waiting on the scarlet, chances are you don't need a scarlet.  In this day and age with new cameras coming out left and right, people are so damn worried about what they are shooting with, which is a bit sad.  It seems like having the latest and greatest gear is becoming more and more of an obsession.

That being said, I am really looking forward to the announcement, and as soon as I can I'll probably pre-order.  If this camera does offer what they have been saying, it's going to change a lot of things.  But, at the same time I'm going to go out and continue to shoot with my hpx, which is still a killer camera.

In the end, the Scarlet is just another camera, nothing more.

yeah im excited for that too.

also, yeah, 120fps is sick. I've shot some skateboarding with the RedONE and it is actually rad.

but so much of it is hype hype hype. ive talked to several kids who are so hyped on the Scarlet, who have no idea what theyre talking about. woopdie-fucking-doo you can shoot in 3k. are you going to be transfering to 35mm? doubt it.

PL mounts are lovely though.

Yeah, honestly, unless you plan on projecting your ski film onto a screen at IF3, then there is no point, an HVX will do you just fine

I'm looking into it as an indy camera to use for actual production, essentially me and my friend are gonna buy it, then offer our services as cinematographers, pay it off, and do our own projects for film fests

I think a lot of people don't realize that the Scarlet bodies may be priced relatively low, but you then have to figure that you'll need to drop at least $5,000 minimum to get into a well kitted 2/3" fixed lens setup.  You'll spend more on accessories and storage than you will on the camera.  It will get up there in price very quickly.

Good call Alex, thats how it always goes.

But I still want one!

Then again I know I probably dont need it and it probably wont look any better in my hands than the 7D... Its just a tool, and like any tool its only as good as the person using it.

Just something to keep in mind.
