So around illinois near wisconsin its soo goddamn exoensive to get your skis mounted these days at ski shops. so i remebered my local dicks sporting goods having a small ski snowbaords section and remebered that they did mount and wax skis. so i called them and they said it was 30 bucks to both mount and wax. thats a good fuckin deal? but is it worth it? how can they possibly mess up drilling in some holes. plus im guna have them dead assymetrical mount my skis. hope they dont fuck up. thuoghts?

how much is it there? im sure its not more expensive than the 75 bucks just for a mount here...
still, just take them to a shop. youll be pissed when they mount them incorrectly which is a higher % of happening at dicks than a ski shop

Mark where you want your skis mounted with a line in permanent marker and explicitly tell them that's where you want it. $30 is a pretty good deal.

they should know what they're doing.
I brought mine to a local shop in portland, paid $50 to mount, left a note of the ski "-5cm back from chord center", told the people doing paper work, and they still mounted at -9cm!!!!! -2cm back from recommended. There went my comi's and after a week and bitching and calling twice a day I finally got my '10 comi's on pro form and split it with the shop (got fucked over).
just make sure you make it clear (even though that doesnt always work) where you want them mounted and if they dont sound confident I would go somewhere else

exactly. you might get lucky and have a legit skier as the tech. go and talk to the guy whos gonna mount them first to make sure he knows what hes doing, then bring your skis back after you get a feel for the tech

yeah he sounded like he knew what he was talking about on the phone. Here's another question i kno it might be a dumb one, but my t-halls (the skis tht im mounting) have a zero marking. and then there is a line tht says-2. it says zero tht means its dead center right? just makin sure.

^this to an extent.
If you're not going to a shop, I'd at least go to somewhere like REI that likely has veteran shop employees and people that are actually passionate about outdoor recreation. REI's just a lot better in my mind than a regular old sporting goods retailer--probably because of their excellent customer service and fair/reasonable shop work contract/policy. I dunno. I guess if I'm not giving my money to a ski shop, I'd rather give it to REI than hand it over to some typical big-box sporting goods retailer like Sports Authority, etc.

It's a good way to do it, i've mounted a couple pairs. Most people don't have access to the right jig and it's pretty easy to fuck up though.

my friend had his first skis mounted at dicks but he bought them their. they ended up mounting them at something like 4 or 5 back and he didnt say anything to the guy. but yea im sure if they screw it up theyll replace em or make it right. i didnt go to my regular shop for my anthems cuz they charge $75 and when i saked them if they would bend my turntable brakes they said "if we bend them they will no longer be touching the snow" so i knew they were idiots and went to a shope up the road and got them mounted and bent for $50. shop around. there are ski shops everywhere dont pay $75

Since you obviously don't understand how running a business works, let me lay a few things out for you.
When you bring in your skis, boots, and bindings you purchased somewhere else and pay your $40 to get "ass raped" on a mount, the shop is charging enough to cover their own costs and hopefully making a little money since it is their ass when something gets messed up. All the tools, jigs, glue, binding release testing equipment, etc. cost MONEY. That shop form you filled out...that costs money too. And they aren't cheap.
What about having a tech who has had enough training to know how to mount a ski? It's pretty damn easy to drill through the bottom of a ski. If your screws are too long, your base gets dimpled. If your holes aren't drilled deep enough, your base gets dimpled.
It's a higher risk mounting something that you didn't sell because you need to make sure everything the customer brings in will work together. And the fact that all you've sold someone is the $40 mount and not a $1000+ ski setup. If you or your employee screws up and something has to be replaced...you're out a LOT of money. Shit happens.
If you buy a ski and binding at my shop you'll probably get a free mount. Or you can pay for a mount and get $280 in tunes instead. You decide. If you bring in all your equipment that you decided to buy online or at Sniagrab, you'll get charged $40 for a mount and prep no questions asked.
If everyone doesn't learn that they need to support their local shops, they'll all be gone someday and I hope everyone gets good at mounting and tuning skis by hand. The internet is really hurting the ski business.
