University and skiing in Canada

Hey guys

I am currentlyenlisted at Copenhagen University in Denmark. I was hooping to take a semesterabroad and combine it with some deep powder and heavy park skiing.

I studyeconomics here in Denmark, but as long as it has something to do with socialstudy, it should be fine.

Can anyone recommenda university in Canada? The only criteria are, that it is close to a mountain.

im also looking into this. I know grousse is like just outside of vancouver, any idea how long it takes to get there from ubc? do they have busses? and is there night skiing?

my top choices are theat or university of calgary and id ski COP and like banff or sunshine or something

grouse has night skiing im not sure how far from ubc it is and wether there are buses or not but since people hike grouse in under an hour it shouldnt be too far of a drive

Another option could be U of Calgary ski cop and sunshine. Or if you come the the interior of BC theres UBCO and TRU that have multiple mountains within three hours

UBC and UoC For out west. If you happen to go to a university on the east coast, try bishops in the eastrern townships of Quebec or Carleton (ottawa) I did two years at Carleton and as Brutal as it was, 2 hours away was Mt. Tramblant which is pretty good for an eastern resort. (Amazing apres ski there as well)

There was a ski club that went up there every weekend so it was easy to get to.

I heard UBC is a pretty intense university though, i go to uvic, its super nice but i dont get to ski much so it sucks

if you can get in, got to UBC.

buses straight to grouse (10 mins)

buses straight to whistler (2 hrs)

legit ski culture with a HUGE skii and board club

do it if you can man, you wont regret it

10 minutes to grouse by bus? Its like half an hour drive, by bus it would be ATLEAST an hour.

But having said that UBC is a good option for skiing, sick school I love the vibes here.

If skiing is your #1 priority on this exchange, SFU is another good option, its actually closer to the mountains then UBC.

I did my first year at SFU and I'm in my 3rd year at UBC, both are good schools but personally I like UBC more.

Grouse is in North Vancouver, just across Lions Gate Bridge. It takes like 1.5-2 hours to bus there. By car it will be much less if you get good traffic. And yes there is night skiing, open till 10pm every night.

Also in Capilano University in North Van would be the best option for skiing in the Van area but its not nearly the size of school of UBC or SFU, and they probably wouldn't have your program

and Quest univeristy in Squamish, but tuition is insane there, and they might not have your program either

It's not as good skiing as out west, but I go to Sir Wilfred Grenfell College in Corner Brook, Newfoundland, which is a 10 minute drive from Marble Mountain, I've actually ridden my bike there in the winter it's so close. Also tuition and season passes are dirt cheap- an early-bird student season pass to Marble is $170 CAD. Tuition rates in Newfoundland have been frozen since 1995 I believe, and courses at Grenfell are $250 for me, I know it's more for International Students, but still cheaper than anywhere else I can think of. SWGC has lots of sociology/anthro courses, also business, English, Visual Arts, Environmental studies, Environmental Science, Classics, Religious studies and a few others. It's part of Memorial University, which is the largest University in the Maritimes.
As far as skiing goes, marble Mountain has 1700' of vertical and the average snowfall I think is around 6'. Last year it snowed almost every day for three weeks in late January/early february, so there were some great pow days, and it's hardly a busy mountain anyway, but there is always powder to be found in the trees, because no one ever goes there. There is also catskiing an hour's drive away in the Blow-me down mountains, and more backcountry an hour in the other direction, in Gros Morne National Park. Meathead productions filmed BC there in 2006/07. There are a lot of opportunities for urban jibbing, and you won't often get shut down by the cops. The park at Marble mountain isn't great (see some of my more recent videos for examples) but it has been improving over the last few seasons, and there are some fun jibs. Marble also has some very nice steeps and bumps.

Cliff Notes: Not as big or snowy as the rockies, but it's some of the best skiing in the Canadian east, Skiing is dirt cheap, tuition is cheap for a good selection of courses with small class sizes. Also housing and food are cheap and the people are generally really nice. There's not as much crime and drugs as Vancouver or Calgary. Night life is not the most exciting, but it's not hard to make your own fun.

no one mentioned MCGILL. Check out 2 hours from over 10 large resorts. You can hit Tremblant, Jay, Stowe. Within 45min you can ski st.sauveur, its even open now!

Yeah Grouse is a good mountain except the line ups on weekends are huge.  If you had a car it takes around 30min but there are buses that go right to the mountain.  Cypress and Seymour are also close to UBC but Cypress is having the olympics this year so they'll be shut down for awhile.

doesn't the copenhagen university have an direct exchange program with ubc ... you should probs go to ubc then you get to pay regular tuiton that you woulda pay in denmark instead of international fees

Skiingis my primary purpose of the stay. Needles to say, it doesn’t have to be a highprofiled university. As I see it, the easier the learning, the easier it is toget into, and the more spare time I have left to ski in.

i just got my degree from University of Calgary, really good school, i quite enjoyed it there. also COP has a great park and is maybe 5-10 mins from the uni, plus your only an hour or so away from banff where u can ski park at norquay, sunshine park and pow, and louise is a bit farther but expanding their park again this year

u of c is great, nice and close to all the skiing you could ask for, plus about a 3 hour drive to kicking horse, fernie and some other good mountains in bc

the only other schools i would say would be in vancouver casue of the few hills in the van area, and whis is about 2 hours away

ubc okanagan is another great one, but didnt look to be on your list, has hills like big white and silver star very close and super fun parks

Haha i thought someone might ask that. The simple answer is, that a year of study abroad looks good on the CV. And since tuision isn't that big a deal (you get the money the "state" safes by not having you enlisted at the home university, and furthermore you get different Scholarships).

Don't get me wrong, a have thought about taking a season abroad, but if i could combine it with my studies I would safe some money, and especially a lot of time.

BTW, I found out what SFU is, it looks pretty legit. I can't really figure out how high your average has to be to get in (our grades are different than yours), but no worries, ill figure it out.

few questions about ubc vancouver
how hard is it to get in? i don't know what the canadian high school grading scale is but is a 3.2 gpa good enough?
also i heard that once you get your canadian student residence that you can get the canadian tuition cost. is this true at all?

i was looking at that earlier but all i see is the requirement for my program and i meet all those, but it doesn't really give any info on how your sat/act scores and gpa play into the admission or anything like that

Definently do not go to anywhere in Toronto, the closest decent montain is blue/MSLM and they are generally packed and a good long drive away if you don't care about the academics then go west either Calgary or Vancouver though I'm guessing Whistler is better than sunshine/lousie/cop (which I have been to).  You could get away with Montreal but if you want the best skiing go west

Ummm thats a tough one, Whister is sick but gets super crowded and skied out,their  park is way better though. Sunshine, Lakelouise and Norquay are smaller but if you add them together this skiing is almost as good, they get less snow but the quality is of snow is better.
