i had the same idea when i moved here from wisco. i wanted to call it "sconnies" and have bar dice nights and flip cup tournaments. obviously it was just a pipe dream, but i have found a few dive-type bars that would fit in well on a corner in a small wisco town
there is a sweet ass beer only (for now anyway) bar on 3s and 5e called andy's. you can't get lenies on tap, but they always have beer specials (pbr often), jukebox is usually playing good tunes especially if we are there, it is never really busy, you can always get a pool table, and sometimes is full of crazy ass people that love to talk about crazy ass things.
it is a fucking hole in the wall that has to have a sign in the ladies room that reads something like " no sex for money in the bathroom" because a tranny hooker used to go in there and blow or fuck dudes for beer money. and she was GROSS, but gave good head.
andy's is my favorite bar in slc. tues- sat the bartender is andy. he is an awesome bartender, and very laid back. also a skier of sorts. he lets us pretty much do whatever we want there as long as we don't break anything expensive, i go there a few times a week usually. if you go in there, ask him if mark is there (that is me). we can play some bottoms up.
x wives is also a fun place to get loaded, two of the 4 bartenders there are big skiers, super cool guys.
cheers to you is right downtown, main and 3rd s, the bartenders are cool, have good drink specials, but there is karaoke on friday's so watch out. can be busy, but often has hot chicks there.
juniors is right near cheers, like 50e 3rd south, more calm, usually have jazz or something on the stereo, but it is a nice place to have a beer or two. can be full of hipsters though. check the bike rack outside to see if they have invaded yet or not.
green street (at trolley square) sucks on the weekends unless you want a hot dance club with skanks and bros, but on a weeknight it is laid back and tap beers ar $1.50 all day every day.
there are a bunch more, but those are the ones i go to the most.
what can i say? stick with what you know, right?
we don't get out to sugarhood and beyond much only becasue we live right downtown and end up walking to close bars instead of cabbing it out there. a bar named sue is a lot of fun though, and i hear so much about the vfw i'm going to have to check it out.
on a somber note, we got a suprise announcement from Andy's (the greatest bar in salt lake city with the best bartender i have ever met)- the sale to new owners has gone through and andy's is closed for an undetermined amount of time for a remodel.
on the plus side they are allegedly getting a liquor license, but instead of a cheap dive bar it is probably going to be a three story super club with a new name and most likely a new staff entirely.
it will be interesting to see how it shakes down, but it was a sad night at andy's when we got the news friday. at least we went out in style, having full pitcher bopttoms up races at 2:30 as andy said "mark, you guys need to finish your pitchers and get the fuck out of here, you drunks"
and to the question about scanning id's, if the bar sells liquor they scan every id for everyone in the bar as soon as you walk in without exception. when they reformed the liquor code to get rid of the private clubs this past year, that was one of the new stipulations in the bill. if your id doesn't scan or you have a passport, they usually just copy all the info down, but i've seen them refuse people for that alone. using a homemade id in slc does not seem like a good idea, but if you have an actual id from a friend that looks enough like you and you can play it off, the night is your oyster.
