I agree that the artist should be able to retain rights. But it's not like T.J. or coreUPT is going to sell the design and make millions. It's a ski - 3 years from now it'll be considered old and the design will fade away. The only difference is that if you choose not to enter you won't get the potential exposure you'd get from your design being rocked by kids all over the world.
On the other hand - you could have the next swoosh logo in store.
Fortunately, I'm not a talented designer so even if I entered I wouldn't care if they kept the rights to my work or not.
