looking for .wav player

ive been searching around for a portable audio player and i have realized most of them dont play .wav files. most of my music and live shows are all in .wav format and i dont want to convert it due to quality loss. so far i have only found the ipod that plays .wav. can anyone suggest another player that can play mutiple formats and is cheaper then the ipod? also looking for a player with atleast 10gb or more

you won't find one thats much cheaper than the iPod with that kind of storage. Check out the Samsung Napster player and the Dell Digital jukebox.

or get a converter and learn how to convert, it's not that hard to do it without losing quality.

yah seiously there is NO way you can tell teh difference between 192Hz MP3 and a WAV man...thats why MP3 is so popular.. cause is really high quality and really small size..

Run a search on 'Yamp'... If it's still around. It works well for just converting .wav to .mp3.

wow you have to be kidding, there is a huge different from mp3 to .wav. i have a lot of live shows and the number one thing that everyone knows it to not decode into mp3 because you do loss alot of quality

There's a big difference between wav and MP3. Even the best MP3 encodes are still lossy where as wav is completely lossless. You might want to check out MPC if you are looking for a really highquality lossy encode. I don't know if any players support it. You might also look into getting a good MP3 encoder such as lame and encode at a smart VBR setting.

alright, gimme a break. how much of a quality loss do you notice when you convert a .wav to a 228 or 192 mp3? seriosuly, I hear nothing different. Quit your bitching, sack up, and give it a try. You'll see then.

your being like the homos who think they can hear a difference between using gold audio wiring and silver audio wiring...

ur gonna listen to it all thru headphones anyways, so unless u wanna scarf up another 200$ for REAL studio monitor headphones too to save on 'quality' might as well just bring the band with you.

you might get lower qual when you hoock up a portable up to a stereo. that is just becuase the volumes are off. mess around with the vol on the amp and the vol on the portable untill you get somthing that sounds better. it your portable has a line out, use that!

If you encode at 256 (or even 192)kbps, it's pretty much impossible for the human ear to tell the difference on anything but the best audio equipment, costing tens of thousands of dollars.

I was going to try to correct everything here that's wrong with explanations to each. Then I realised I'd be typing for a long, long time. The ignorance here is mind-numbing. Here are just a few points:

-Gold Plated connections do not affect quality, they only last longer and prevent corrosion.

-There is a considerable difference between a 128, a 192 and a 256 ecoded MP3. However, the real difference comes when its the TYPE of encode that is done. Lame is the best free MP3 encoder. Anyone who knows anything about encoding uses a Variable bitrate anyway.

-One of the most common reasons people can't tell the difference in file types is because their stereo or headphones suck. Headphones are the best for picking up on sound quality.

-Yes, AAC does kick ass, 192 AAC is very nice.

I myself am not a huge audio geek but I have a friend who is the paragon of one. I'm sick of the idiots on here who talk out of their ass.

One more quick thing, if you have nice headphones and are listening to a shitty encode, it will still sound like garbage. If you have a shitty pair of headphones and are listening to a lossless file, it will still sound like garbage. It's completely pointless to have the best headphones out there when you have a shitty source.

^ thank you for stating that, i am glad that there are accually a few people in this site with knowledge and understanding of audio quality. they reason for no converting to mp3 is not because of listening to it from my headphones when skiing, i aditt it doesnt matter if you are listening to it when skiing. but you do losse quality if you try to listen to the music through other speakers when quality does matter. i also beleave that when converting to MP3 you loss that suround sound effect that plays out of numerous speakers and the distinction of your bass and mp3 only has the capability to distinc 2 speaker sources. just trying to remember what people have told me.

ok man, i have knowledge of audio quality, i have been doin auto stereos for a while now, but u said u wanted a HANDHELD. If u conveter WAV to properly compressed mp3, ur really not gonna notice it thru headphones.. i donno what ur doin with it, mabey ur gonna go hook it up to a stereo (why would you?) but for handhelds, there isnt gonna be any real difference you can notice unless u have some sort of superhearing..

Dear Moe,
Headphones are better for noticing audio quality. This is why recording studios use them. A big factor is that they cut out ambient noise. One of my roomates is in audiotech. He says you're an idiot. Sorry.

hence, i agree with ur freind, but shitty headphones are cheap, and shit, and good headphones are really expensive, defeating the purpose of this thread completely.
