Who beleives in this? Its one of my most strongest beliefs that we as 'superior' beings should live and let live. Anyone else agree?

i agree to an extent. i dont like how animals are treated for the most part. as far as animal farming goes, how they keep chickens and other animals cooped up all day until they are old enough to be killed for food. but if you're saying we shouldnt kill animals to eat for food, thats ridiculos since we were made to eat meat.

Ive heard bothe arguments, people saying by no means were we 'meant' to eat meat, but iveheard that its natural too, but so is getting angry with people and fighting, but they are 'natural feelings' that we (most of the time) suppress, so why not suppress the eating meat one? Because it is living of misery and violence, the torture of living, breathing, thinking beings.
And think about milk, do you see any other species apart from us that drink milk beyong infancy (thats natural) and do you see any other species drinking another species milk?

vegetables are living things too. Lagwagon just pointed out the vegetarian achillies heel: they think people are 'superior' while at the same time preaching equality and 'live and let live'. Vegetarianism is cop-out to make people 'think' they are saving the world and look down on other people. The only way you could possibly validate not killing anything for food is to eat inorganic material that is free from bacteria, which is not possible. Therefore, the only realistic solution stems from hunter-gatherer practises: be one with the land and animals, take only what you need, use everything and respect the animals that died to feed you because it is an INESCAPABLE fact of life, to say otherwise is hypocritical and foolish. Furthermore, fruit and vegetable farming is FAR MORE devastating to farmland than animal farming.

221, i agree with a lot of that, but i dont think hunter-gathering is the only way to live, i think that there are manyways to live that dont hurt the earth, or our chances of survival, the problem with our culture is not that we live in a way that is harmfull to the earth, its that we insist on making everybody live this way, i.e. when we found the new world, we decided that the people that had been living there for hundreds, maybe thousands of years happily werent living the way god meant them too, so they converted the ones they could and killed the rest, another example is missionarys

the modern farm animal has evolved to live in captivity and would die if left unattended to itself. There are examples where this isnt true like beef cattle but as far as chickens go theres no way. If youve ever worked on a chicken farm then you would know why their in cages. The pecking order isnt just a figure of speech. Chickens will peck each other to death if they arent confined.
My opinions are biased though because i am a farmer.

vegetables are organisms too? that is true on a cellular level, but as far as we know vegetables have no neural receptors and no neural system, therefor they are not in a concious state and feel no pain. what a worthless statement.

i went to a murder city devils concert once and like all good seattle punk shows, there was a strong presence of activism. the animal rights crew were there and were showing a highlights video of animal cruelty and animal testing. i've seen a lot of horrible shit in my lifetime, but what i saw on this video is burned into my brain. have you ever seen how they slaughter cows in slaughter houses, are you aware that a lot of testing for cancer is done on animals, and that because anesthesia is too expensive they do full operations on animals without it. can you imagine what its like to be strapped down and cut open and have your organs worked on while you are concious, most animals die of shock because the pain is too intense. the worst by far that i saw on the video was a pig that was being held down and burned alive by a blowtorch. the point of this was to test skin treatments for burn victims. i have never seen anything like that before - fucking horrible. yes its all in the name of science, but can you really feel all that good about it when things like this are going on? if you want to rationalize these sorts of procedures, then you can also rationalize what WWII japan did to the chinese and what nazi germany did to its subjects in the holocaust. a lot of what we know about human science these days is founded by studies performed during the wwII era. you ever seen a pictures of that shit? horrible huh? well its the same damn thing. the point is that no organism should have to undergo that sort of excruciating pain...

Your animals rights videos showing animals being operated on without anestesia are from the very few people that break the law. Using anestetics while operating has been required by law for a long time now and yes it does cost a lot so it does lead to nowadays a lot of people will kill the animal in a humane manner rather than perform surgery. Also the killing methods in slaughter plants I would find much more humane than back in the days of hunter/gatherers because it is a slow painful death for an animal being shot by an arrow. Also the popular mad cow video that you always see on tv is actually a healthy cow but it slipped on the wet cement and was having problems standing up so don't believe everything that you see on tv.

yes obviously your going to see horrible things like that from the activists, but in reality as the guy above me said, the shit they do really isnt that bad, the activists just find the worst of it and show it to you but mostly they use anisthetics, and my dad is a doctor and he runs an expieriment when they intibate pigs every year and they are completely knocked out

i didn't make any reference to any mad cow disease footage. as for regulations on anesthetics, yes things may very well have improved since i saw that video (6 years ago). as for cows in slaughter houses, last i learned an enromus probe is shoved through the neck behind the cows skull, or spinal cord and is then charged with an electric pulse to fry the cows nervous system - if am incorrect please tell me otherwise. regardless of anesthetics, animals are killed frequently due to testing of products and procedures. ever read the hot zone, thats a classic example. the author speaks about walking down the isles of laboratory cages where monkeys infected with ebola lie in pools of their own hemorraged blood, with glazed over eyes and open jaws. don't think that just because congress passed a few laws that keep johnson and johnson from rubbing soap in rabbits eyes, means that all is fine and dandy now.

i'm not so sure that chickens couldn't survive on their own, unlike humans and some of our primate relatives, chickens are born with instincts. pretty much they just need to fuck and eat. yes you can breed an animal to be docile and whatnot, but a house cat still has the instinctual knowledge to hunt for itself.

Hey guess what I enjoy eating meat! Am i gonna stop because someone thinks its cruel or wrong, HELL NO. Humans are at the top of the food chain because guess what we have the ability to reason. Our bodies digest meat and vegetables meaning we are omnivores. Are omnivores and carnivores natural on this planet? YES, so get off your high horse and stop preaching.

If you are talking animal cruelty then you have some valid points, but just because some of the methods may SEEM inhumane that does not necessarily mean they are and it sure isnt gonna make me stop eating meat. In fact I may go cook up some venison right now, which was shot by my family, personally i would rather be shot that hit by a car. you wanna talk problems talk over development and humans inablity to use our resources reponsibly!

Im am thinking about cuttingback on beef. For two main reasons. Beef is unhealthy, plain and simple, its one of the reason Americans, Brits, and Austrlians have a relativley high rates of heart disease.
And number 2, I love to ski, hike, and enjoy the outdoors. To raise ONE pound of beef it requiers 40 acres, over 1000 gallons of water (in contrast, a pound of wheat only needs 40 gallons ) and thousands of pounds of grain, and hay and whatever else cows eat.
To not eat beef you would be saving acres of land (that could be returned to its natural habitat or used for other crops), thousnds of gallons of water and vegetarian food. PLus cows create a lot of methane ect.
I still eat fish and poultry, its healtier and less damaging to the world.

just because animals that are bred have instincts, it doesn't mean that they have the ability to survive. Think of a stray cat, most straty cats end dying because of lack of food. Chickens will probably have the same problem. \

Its in our nature to eat other animals, and although we don't need to to survive, there are lots of other more harmful things that we dont need to survive that we still use like cars. Killing animals for eating in my opinion isn't wrong in itself, i just think that it's unfortunate the process that the animals we eat go through to get on the dinner table.

As it is, the world is our resource for humans to live off of just like any other animal. The problem is that we are living off of the world in a way that is going to prevent other species ability to live, which i think, along with most people is wrong. Unfortunately, i dont think that at this point, we can really prevent this disaster. The world is growing at an incredible rate, and the resources are constantly getting chewed up.

Eventually, evolution will take its course, we will probably all die out because of war or starvation, and either become extinct or move off to other planets. The world will slowly decompose and more forms of life will arise and any evidence of humans will disappear. That's my one condolence when i think about us destory this world.

Well right there you just created a class system for living things. So, you are saying that abortions are ok because the fetus doesnt feel pain? thats pretty gruesome too, but you probably dont care because you just want to be a vegetarian because its 'cool' and you want on the bandwagon, even though your beliefs aren't consistent. Since the human body is made to break down meat for energy and protein, I think that it is pefectly acceptable to eat meat.

As far as vegetarians saying that eating meat takes up too many resources, there is more than enough food to feed everyone on this planet at the moment. The problem is with politics and shipping.

And for animal testing, if animals are treated humanely, I believe that it is a neccesilty for the improvement of science and the entire ecosystem welfare. For those who think that animals are cuddly and more humane than we are, just remember that almost any animal will eat their offspring or each other not just to survive. And to the PETA activists, releasing caged animals does not solve anything. It only costs those animals' lives when they cannot survive on their own.

Oh yeah, and doing things to prisoners is not the answer. There have been death row volunteers to participate in experiments, you cannot do this against their will. The Nazi's did this to the Jews during the holocost and rightly, that information is not used my scientists.

I wa svegeterian much longer before i saw any videos on animal cruelty and so, so dont judge me label like that.

I once saw this dude with a 'meat is murder' patch on his shorts a few years back and remember thinking 'what the fuck, he cant be serious,theyre only animals' but as my mind has opened open to many types of oppresson, i realised that we as one people, are all ok with treating animals, creatures like machines and seem even happy when we eat meat, so i didnt wanna be part of the lethargic 'happy' accepted cruetly. Fucken bullshit.

what do you all think of the 'life feeds on life' statement? i always think of animal farm and george orwell. he said that the only utopia was nature. that it was neccessary for life to feed on life, and that nature didn't kill with cruelty. that's what humans do.

in my opinion there's no reason to eat something that tastes like grass, just because the good stuff supposedly had a consciousness

I mean no disrespect, but have any of you that think animals raised for consumption actually ever been to a farm? Sure there are the few exceptions, but for the most part farmers love their animals. They do not disrespect them, but just like a child, if the animal is acting up it will be put in its place.

Oddly enough, the fact that not enough people were consuming beef had Canadian farmers almost euthanizing up to 10000 head. It never happened, but some animals did starve to death. This is linked to a different issue and more bullshit that comes with all the mad cow hype, but it is related.

I think that if you are a vegetarian because you have intolerance to meat then it is understandable, but if it is purely because you want to 'Liberate' animals you might need to take a second look, but if you continue to feel that way that is your choice. However, starting this thread, whether you realize it or not, was essentially telling others that eating meat is not right.
