Yo, anyone remember when Line put snowboard rivets in their skis so you could mount a pair of reactor bindings yourself?

A buddy (who works at a shop) and i are going to try to do this, but with a new motive...

So i guess snowboarders like to mount their bindings on the nose and tail of their boards, and places will widen the stance on a snowboard to accomidate.

Bindings cost a $hit load of money, so we want to try to take off the bindings on a pair of my old POS AR5s and put in these rivits so that, if this works on this trial pair which we dont care about, you could potentialy drill the patern for one pair of bindings on multiple pairs of skis, put rivets in the holes, and only have one pair of bindings shared by multiple skis.

I want to know, has anyone tried this, BESIDES LINE, and what was your degree of sucess, if any?

Before you shoot this down because it didnt work out for Line, keep in mind that the reactor bindings, for the most part, were total $hit, and not many people had the actual rivets pull out, much like snowboarders.

A lot of people do this. It makes traveling with 3-4 pairs of skis a lot easier

i think K2 is trying something similar this year with the schizo or whatever its called..

marker makes them, and yea, kinda

they just move around, like go from center to traditional with a flip of a switch instead of redrilling

they rock. super simple, adjustments can be made with out even taking your boot out. i did a review on them from this summer, check it out.

i liked them enough to put them on my new fujas

In theory it sounds a little well dumb...

However if the snowboard industries has adopted this as the one and only way of mounting snowboard bindings. I'm interested to see how this works. Keep me posted.

so you are gonna dril skis and heli coil the holes so that you can take the bindings off easily?

do you know how rivets work? you need some kind of cavity in the ski itself in order for the rivet to do anything. so once you figure out how to do that, now youve got cavities in your skis. this could potentially result in the ski breaking. now say the ski doesnt brake, oops. you totaly meant inserts. that was your own fault. and this has been discussed MANY TIMES. search bar.

Yeah use heli coils. My local shop did this with their demo rockers, they have heli 2 different sets of heli coils so you can have different boots fit. (the bindings were px12's so the heel slid a bit)

Or T nuts if you want to get extreme.

no, i meant rivets, like threaded on both sides that screw into an epoxy coated hole, kinda like a snowboard, with a threaded washer on the top to hold them in. Don't be a d bag, searchbar a rivet

kinda, but with a reenforced and better secured hole, its a rivet with the exact inside bore and diameter of a screw, that also has a bore like that of a typical binding screw on the outside. you then put some type of washer or loctight over the top tip to keep water out. in theory, it works the same as a screw, just minus the useless hole when you remove the screws.

the purpose is to use one pair of bindings on many pairs of skis, because unlike skis, you dont really buy different bindings for different conditions unless you race, freeski, and AT

Hmmm, if the holes are sealed good you could have multiple mounts on your skis. That would be sick, center mount one day. Next day, oh shit pow day, move that shit back a little. Damn that would be cool. And if all bindings had the same screw pattern. fap fap fap

I'm astounded nobody brought up Blizzard's IQ system:

The skis themselves have a mini grand canyon in them, with walls slanted inward, as shown in the above picture. The canyon walls hold the binding down and then a helicoil holds the bindings from fore/aft movement. You can put as many helicoils as you want in one ski, so you can have a ski center mount for park, but move back the bindings for a pow day, or you can have multiple pairs of skis, but one pair of bindings between them.


Sorry, but it looks like not only is this more simple than your idea, it already exists.

my apologies, the tech i talked to said it was a rivet, not a helicoil

we're going to test it out on a pair of old AR5s with P12s

the purpose of the experiment was to allow a pair of skis like volkl mantras, which might be used either on or off the mountain, to have an AT binding when doing backcountry and a traditional binding when on hill, with the same hole patern, like Dukes and Jesters

yeah, its a great idea, you should def. do it. fuck, i should too, ive kinda thought about it, but never really took up the initiative. but yea, traveling without bindings on is MONEY. plus adjust ability and all. i usually just toss epoxy in screw holes when i remount, which works fine. and on snowboards, they usually cut out the base, and install T nuts up through the core, and re epoxy ptex down. it might get a lil sketch on narrow skis (so those AR5s will be a good test), but yea, good idea man.
