so, in that case, if a small-town attorney who's REALLY REALLY good at practicing law is picked up by a large firm in a large city and chooses to work with them to make more money and be involved in law on a much larger scale, that's "selling out"?

changing one's self happens on a daily basis- i'm nowhere near the kid i was four, five years ago. and i can honestly say i've done a lot to change my image to promote my DJing. just as execs put on suits to impress others as being "professional", entertainers change their image to appeal to the audience they're trying to attract. it's done in EVERY line of work.

Can you not hold true to your values, while gaining your prized "success?" Why should we have to lose the values to accomplish anything? Is that really what you are trying to say here?

Your not really making any points there hombre. You can not argue that what she is doing is not solely for the purpose of marketing herself to the masses. Yes, she may be making a living from this, but thats the end, not the action.

it blows my mind that we're surrounded by commercialism, yet musicians who become pop stars are "sell outs"... right.... they're just better at marketing themselves than you, but that's not "selling out".

Anyone with a mind can clearly see that thats not how she wants to be perceived. She does this to because she knows it will sell, every move she makes is calculated.

Now listen okay, when an artist changes oneself once they become a "pop star" they are selling out. Many artists don't sell out however, Kid cudi has not sold out (yet.) Hes still saying the same lines he was before Day n Nite. He didn't go out and get dressed up in some freaky as shit and act like he has a vagina. Gaga, however did.

But really kid, why are you now taking my arguments, agreeing with them, then arguing back. Earlier you felt it wasn't marketing. You felt it was a "career."

But Im done, because well I don't really give a fuck about a troll who is just trying to raise their post count. Go back to ladies men if thats all your going to do.

on second thought, maybe i don't agree with you.. if she's not making the music she wants to make, then yes it could be called selling out. but if she enjoys making the music she does, than all the more power to her and her penor.

i know exactly what you're saying. why wouldnt she want to be famous and have her music heard across the whole globe? isnt that the whole idea? just like making it pro as a skier? actually, you know what, im sure if she could do it again she would just keep playing low paying gigs in shitty bars, just so people (who obviously aren't in the same level as her) won't call her a 'sell out'. its funny to watch kids call something thats popular, talentless and say the artist sold out. if you were in the same situation, and someone wanted to sign you and market you around the world (not to mention all the money you'd get), would you say "fuck you and your record label, i'm no sell out!"?...didn't think so, kids.

completely different... selling out is when a musician or whatever changes their art so that it will be in accordance with what the masses want. and if your willing to do that, most of the time, it means you were in it for all the wrong reasons. This is why most good music comes from artists who did not sell out, as they are in it for all the right reasons (their art, not exclusively money). Assuming your logic that only the REALLY REALLY good musicians sell out, please enlighten on your taste in music.

so according to you, success is measured solely on how much money you make. I would consider a real artist like Brother Ali way more successful than Lady Gaga, even though she probably  makes 100x as much as he does. I think selling out is when you put money over the quality of the content you distribute. The bills you make is no reflection of how well you are doing in life, which is what I call success.

You know I could claim that this isnt my first user name, and that i had one from at least 2 years before this, but whats the point. Even though its true.


What I find sad is that you know I am right, but wont be mature enough to answer the question so you divert to personal attacks. Also while were at the personal attacks, do you know what this was like 10 years gago? Because Im pretty sure your member number would have to be 1-10 for that to happen. But the real question is why the fuck are you still here if you have been on since '99. Shouldn't you be out in the real world growing up? I said in order for you to have been a member in '99 you would of had to be the first member. I never said you had to stop skiing, I said when I'm 30 my life will have more purpose than to troll online forums.  You totally need to stop man, why can't someone who is "grown up" in life support a ski website and for the same matter play video games or do what ever the fuck they want. My dad is a very successful person in life and manages multiple grain elevators in southern minnesota pulls in about 120k a year. He loves to "troll" online forums about cars and the NFL. Right now I can see you living a very one dimensional life and being a stressed out person. I think you need to step back and chill.
