Colleges in good skiing areas?

I'm basically having a breakdown right now because i came to the bitter realization that it's october of my senior year, and all my years of dreaming of living out west and skiing big mountains everyday could be a reality, but im slowly letting it slip away. I live in cleveland and had almost given up on the hope of skiing pow more than 2 days per year bc my two major (ski related) college choices, CU Boulder and UVM are 40 grand out of state, and even with possible scholarships for 29 act and 3.9 accum, theres no way i could afford that. Then i heard an old friend of mine enrolled at msu in bozeman last year, being mid 20s out of state tuiton, and i realized that i dont have to be stuck at Miami University in Ohio just because CU and UVM are out of the question.

i realize college is so much more than skiing, and i feel that no matter where i go (as long as its not community college etc.) i can succeed. so no need criticizing me on this point. Im just asking for some universities that are cheaper out of state tuition, yet still academically respectable, that are close to mountains with more than 500 ft vertical. That way i can apply to several places and keep my options open.

CSMT is a decent engineering school 90 minutes from Breck

Idk how accurate that is but It says around 20k...

check out western state in colorado. in state its 14000 a year or around that and out of state is just over 20 i think... its in gunison which is like 10 min away from crested butte which has incredible bc and pow

unm definitley is not your best choice, but im sure its cheaper than some colorado collages and my home mountain is about an hour away and is 1750 vert. also, taos ski valley is 2-3 hours from unm and is 3300 vert. basically they would both be much better skiing than the ice coast if your willing to drive, and there may be collages closer to them that im not aware of.

Hey I am from Ohio too, Cincinnati but I was the same as you I didn't want to go to some shitty ass Ohio college that I wouldn't get to ski fun mountains or be around things I love, outdoors, hiking, etc.

I choose to go to college at MSU Bozeman and I fucking love it here. It is awesome, surrounded by mountains, 20ish minutes from Bridger and hourish from Big Sky. We have already had some snow and it's amazing.

I recommend researching colleges around that are around things you like to do. Because you only get to college once so might as well have fun and do what you love.

check out western state college in Gunnision CO. 35 min drive to Crested butte mtn, and a bit over two hrs to the front range resorts(vail, break, key ect..) & insane back country skiing. its a fairly inexpensive school.

Utah sounds like a perfect fit for you. A good school and its really cheap and its under an hour to like 9 awesome ski areas.  Im heading out there next semester and im so stoked.

thatsss not helping his money issue..

check out st. michaels in VT i honeslty don't know about tuition but my dad went there and he wasn't loaded also Siena, it's pretty cheap and is about and hr from mt snow, 2 to killington, whiteface

Yo man i go to MSU bozeman and tuiton isnt 20 grand. Its 12 total. Skiing is 1/2 an hour away, and then theres big sky which is now americas biggest ski resort 45 minutes away. Its sick, no crowds, ridiculous snow. Best choice i ever made.

University Of Nevada, Reno.  30-40 minutes to all the resorts on the north shore of Tahoe... Northstar, Boreal, Squaw, Alpine Meadows, etc.  Only like $15k out of state.

as said above western washington is awesome. awesome school and close to baker. i knew one guy that came all the way from vermont for the skiing there. also, (admittedly, definately not big time skiing as with some of the other schools mentioned but maybe worth a look), but how about boise state? i don't think it's expensive out of state and bogus basin is close (35-40 min), and a little more than 2 hrs away is brundage which always has good snow, plus its a pretty short road trip to grand targhee and jackson hole (5hrs). schweitzer and sun valley become possibilities as well (if your into schweitzer u of idaho could be a consideration too).

it's Colorado School of Mines, btw. It's a mining engineering school; very specialized, but also pretty good. As far as out of state schools near skiing...I'd say U British Columbia (UBC) would be good if you can get in. It's cheaper than US schools and is just as good as, say, University of Washington. Perhaps better in some areas.

As Mr. Heath mentioned above, U of U is a good school for out of state as well. After 12 months in school there you automatically get in-state tuition, I believe. Good deal, great skiing.

and whoever mentioned Bowdoin, that school is expensive as fuck.

Um. Do NOT check out St. Mike's. It's making me broke as fuck. Maybe I'm just ignorant about money and shit, but it isn't as cheap as schools that are mentioned in here, that are closer to bigger mountatins. It's private and expensive, so I really don't think it's what you're looking for.

smc is ~42K a  year. right up there, if not a little more, than CU and UVM. it's a small school though. I think I'm getting my money's worth. cause it's private you don't have to pay $500 to join a ski club.

weigh your options. private may be a bit more, but you might get better scholarships and less fees to participate in activities. everything exrtacurricular is free here

im at Union College and its fucking sick.  its the best ski club where you never pay more than twenty a trip and its free on weekdays.  It is the 13th best party school in the nation and 26 best overall.  we get mad snow and we go ski mount snow 4 days a week.  pretty dope

Don't give up on CU and UVM - I would say to apply and wait until you get your financial package. Some public universities give grants, which you don't have to pay back.

yo check out weber state university in ogden utah. its 30 minutes from snowbasin and powder mountain. if you want pow this is the spot ive been here for a year and a half and i know the snow is gonna be good. i had a pass to powder cuz there park is sick but this year im gettiing one to basin because its got more vert and more areas for pow. i suggest this school

school of mines, is pretty cool, but not so cheap.
Its about 30K a year for me before scholarships, but its a really good engineering school. 
skiing is half an hour (echo mt) to like an hour and a half (vail, breck, other stuff) but there is so much damn work that its hard to get in a lot of mt time (maybe like 60 days, only because of long season).
but its a good school.

OSU cascades in bend, oregon.  not sure what the outta state tuition is but all of the lower division courses are billed at community college rate which is pretty fuckin sexy. all those bullshit classes that you dont wanna take you only have to pay like 1/5 of what the 300-400 level courses cost. and its about 20 minutes from bachelor

dude check out Montana State in Bozeman. 15 minutes from Bridger Bowl. Just got about a foot and a half of snow yesterday and today! skiing is sick if you like backcountry. 45 minutes from Big Sky/Moonlight. Bridger cuts pretty nice deals on Season Passes. Full time student that's 18 skis for $320! We get a ton of snow and its a good school and a great town!

Here is how to convince your parents to let you go out of state. first, you must show them that Ohio has the 3rd highest in-state tuition. second, show them a school such as the u of u or msu bozeman. third show them that you can get in-state residency after the first year. the first year will cost you as much as going to a private school in ohio such case western or kenyon (bc they are real pricey). after that show them all the out of state scholarships that you will apply for and sit down and put time into writing these because they will pay off in the long run. Another thing about Ohio schools in comparison to school out west is the cost of living in the dorms. at univ. of akron (the cheapest is 8k) in comparison to u of u which is 5. The last point you need to hit on is how you are mature enough to be 2000 miles and you want to experience something new and diverse. DON'T talk about how great the skiing is because they will think that you will not attend class and fail out. So there you go, i hope that helps and if you have any question let me know.

If you want to ski then go ski.
If you want to go to college then go to college.
If you are serous about college skiing should not be a priority. Ski during your winter and spring break.
If you are not serous about college, don't waist your money and time, you won't get anything out of the other end.

UC Boulder is one of the most expensive out of state tuitions in the US. i plan on going to Colorado Community college for a year after my snr year to establish residency and then get in-state tuition the following year.

WESTERN STATE!!!! im a freshman here and its mad awesome we are skiing on Saturday yes the 10th of october, and i just got done with a month and a half straight of riding the best mountain biking trails in the world. with you grade point average and act score you could get in here for cheap. its definatley worth it man best place to go to college and best place to go skiing CRESTED BUTTE! but this sounds like an ad so illl give you the down sides its fucking balls cold here (dosen't matter because you will be skiing) and there are seriously like six girls here.

yo bozeman mt is where its at, just come out here next year ski for a year and work at one of the resorts get residency, then your tuition will be like 3000 a semester and you can get a really amazing education while getting some even better skiing, MSU is way underrated check it out its really a great school we dont have some of the best professors because they want to make alot of money most of them are here for the outdoors too!

University of Utah is the best shit you can ever do. 
7 of the best resorts in the world within 45 minutes of campus.
500+ inches of snow a year.
Amazing Dorms... like I want to move back into them.
Huge ski/snowboard culture.
AND...... Out of state tuition is like $13,000 a year, and you get instate after just ONE year.  And instate tuition is only about $2500 a semester.  It's super cheap and your parents/you will save money, and it's an ill school.
If you go to CU boulder you're fucking up.

University of Utah, Utah state, western state colorado, fort lewis college(CO), MSU, university of Montana, Lyndon state college(VT), Johnson State(VT), Castleton(VT) etc. dude i was in the same boat as you! i was even enrolled at uvm and then last minute my parents realized that they couldn't afford it anymore!!!! I am now at community college stuck in PA for atleast this year. research dude there are soo many other cheaper schools out there. keep your head up you'll be fine

If you aren't scared of leaving the country, University of British Columbia is a good option. Whistler is 1 and a half hours away, and 3 local mountains in Vancouver within 30-45 minutes off the campus.

Wicked Whistler university student pass. Unlimited access including Peak 2 Peak gondy for 399 as long as you are taking a full-time course load (min of 3 courses).

Vancouver is one amazing city. Kind of expensive to live in but still one of the most liveable and best cities on the planet.

International tuition at UBC i believe is around 20k canadian, but Im not entirely sure.

It's worth looking into.
