GEORGETOWN - Loveland Ski Area is set to win this year's race to be the first ski area to open for the season in North America.
Loveland announced on Tuesday afternoon that Chair 1 will start up at 9 a.m. on Wednesday.
The ski area started making snow in preparation for the opening day on Sept. 21.
Each year, Loveland and Arapahoe Basin race to be the first ski area to open. A-Basin said on Tuesday it had 19 snow guns running, but had not set an opening day.
Loveland says Wednesday will mark its earliest opening day in 40 years.
"Skiers and riders have been waiting all summer for this day and we are anxious to fire up the lifts," Loveland Director of Business Operations Rob Goodell said in a statement.
Loveland will let skiers and snowboarders have access to a top-to-bottom run via Chair 1.
