Schrodingers cat

Should be pretty interesting.  Quantum Mechanics is very interesting, taking it right now.  Definitely some crazy shit that can be fun to wrap your head around.

Wow, that's cool. I've heard a lot about the idea, but I didn't think it could be physically done to something living. I still don't really understand how. Good find, though.

One time in like fourth grade i tried to learn quantum mechanics. I've since forgotten what i learned, but it sounds cool so maybe i'll start reading up on it.  I don't really understand the Schrodinger's cat thing though. What does it mean the cat is both live and dead in a "superposition"? Is it because they don't know if it's alive?

They are doing it in a vacuum. The reason it couldn't be done on a cat(yet) is because a cat needs air and is big leading to too many variables. The flu virus can live in a vacuum and so can the bug they are trying it on.

For those who don't know schrodingers cat is a thought experiment(meaning it can't actually happen right now) in which a cat is placed in a box sealed off from anybody and inside with it is a very small amount of radioactive material. So much material that there is a 50-50 chance that an atom will decay in the time the cat is in the box. This radioactive decay is sort of random because of quantum mechanics. There is a device which can tell if an atom decayed and it is connected to a hammer which will bust open a container of cyanide(or any poison) if an atom decays. Since no one knows what is going on in the box the cat is considered dead and alive at the same time.

That may not be 100% correct but I think it covers the gist. I can't believe I wrote a fucking paragraph on that and I can't bring myself to finish a lab report for ap chem. I guess dead cats are more interesting.

To me the fact that is alive or not seems relatively trivial and it seems as though schrodinger's theory has about as much supporting evidence as it can possibly get given that by directly observing a particle in superposition you will in fact remove it from that state. Feel free to correct me if im wrong, im hardly an expert, but those are my thoughts~

You know..funny thing about that. I have like one of those eyewitness picture books that explains this. Such weird shit, cause I thought eyewitness books were for little kids.

Schrodinger's Cat has become a hipster trend here at the U of Utah. I've seen about 5 shirts that sport the image, and all of them are sociology majors. Fucking kids.

Ya pretty much because of Heisenberg's uncertainty principles.  However, there is quite a bit of supporting evidence for a lot of Schrodingers equations and his wave function and stuff.  It's pretty interesting.  What I find more interesting is that there isn't really any direct supporting evidence, but over the last 100 years with hundreds of experiments designed just to disprove him, they have all failed.

Haha I bought a DK book about the brain the other day. I thought they were for little kids too, but despite pretty pictures there is a lot of jargon and information in them. Maybe not a neurology textbook, but still a good introduction if you are interested in those things.
