Music piracy and the industry

Im curious to know what all of you think about the music industry currently. One one side we have the free downloading community, and on the other side with have the record labels suing people left and right. A war between them is constantly being raged. This is obviously not the way to combat an unstoppable force of technology that is changing the industry forever. What are your thoughts on the future of the music industry and the involvement of the internet? Will we always still go to record stores and pick up a CD? will we constantly always be downloading free music when we can? Do you think we should get rid of labels all together?
Thoughts please.

i think it can be an enormous problem for the artist depending on the type of performer they are. for large touring acts, cd sales mean nothing, its the concerts that bring in the cashmoney - if you disagree take a look at the most consistently successful touring act in america right now: dave matthews (who openly encouraged downloading). but for other artists, especially young fresh groups that can't consecutively sell out football stadiums across the country, it can be a problem. i suppose in some ways you could see this as a survival of the fittest. worthless one hit wonder bands will lose almost all record sales - perhaps this downloading business will force bands as well as labels to release more consistently good albums. but its hard to feel bad for musicians complaining about downloaders when they are flippin their bling on mtv. lately however, even rappers and hip hop artists seem to be recognizing the fact that there are billions of downloaders and there isn't much that can be done to stop them - in an interview on mtv2, kanye west told viewers to download his music in the hopes that it would lead to album purchases. despite what artists are saying, i think that all of us who pay close attention to music know by now that record company big whigs are usually money hoarding bastards - so the whole thing is fucked really. don't mind me i'm just ranting... my opinion: most mainstream music is formulated garbage anyway, so i'll take my undergound non spotlight shit anyday. besides, most of the people who support my favorite bands would agree that there is a beauty in record shopping that one cannot find in double clicking amid kazaa pop ups.

I think the music labels need to stop being dumbasses. One of the main reasons I will download songs is because I want to see what the rest of the songs on the cd are like before I wast $18 on some piece of crap. If it is good I will almost always go buy the cd. At least for me and a lot of people I know the reason they download is because cd's are a rip off. If everyone would sell cd's for like 8 or 10 dollars than a lot fewer people would download, and they could make a larger profit. Just my thoughts on the whole thing.

e pol, yeah i hear what you're saying, in fact a few (and a very few) record labels are trying this maneuver, and its kind of been working - that is selling cd's for less money in the hopes that they will yield the same profit margins due to buyers purchasing on impulse...although it needs to be tested more to gage whether it can be successful...

if an album is good, I'll buy it. If I'm checking out someone new, I'll download, if they lots of good shit, I'll buy it. If its a single specific song, I'll dowload.
Record labels are unnesesary and music is an 'alternative' career. If you wanna make the big bucks, get a job like everybody else. I couldnt care less if every band and label fell off the earth today, more talent is always there.

When the industry lowers the price of a CD to an affordable price and makes a concert ticket so everyone can affort it with out having to take out a loan. Until then i'll down loat stuff i don't even listen to just to piss them off.

if people really like the artist and want to support them they will buy the album, downloading music just gives you more options on wether you want to support the artist. Kanye West has the right idea and im sure he'll do a huge tour over the summer to make up for people not buying his record even though its been out for 2 years.

Unfortunately the way the music industry works labels are a must at this point, however with ever evolving technology they are realizing they are not needed anymore, this is why they are combatting downloading so much, it is their jobs on the line. For a small price the average joe can go and record a decent quality digital recording in their basement, and then to distribute this to the proper channels is very easy whether it be on cds or downloading, for club owners to listen to because any good band starts playing small clubs and getting a following eventually making onto the latenight local radio stations local spotlight show and so on and so forth.

^ no. downloading is one kind of copyright infringement and uploading is another kind. And contrary to popular belief it is also illegal to download even if you own the album. Trust me i had to do research on this for a pamphlet for all incoming freshmen to my university

^while you are right that downloading a song or album that you already have is technically illegal, it is the closest thing to legal motives right now. Technically, if you purchase the cd, and it is lost, stolen, damaged, or otherwise unusable, the producer (record company) is supposed to (by copyright law) replace it. Once you purchase the licensing (sp?) rights to a piece of digital media, you are not required to buy it again. Your license is your original purchase, and it does not expire. However good luck getting the record companies to obey the same laws they are attacking people with. Perfect example came from Jack Valenti of the MPAA in regards to DVD downloading, and he made a comment that if a DVD gets damaged, just buy a new one, well, per copyright laws the consumer doesn't need to buy a new copy, the producer is supposed to supply the customer with a new one (without charge, obviously shipping can be incurred). The only solution to this will be for the RIAA/MPAA and consumers to work together, not against eachother.

wow are you serious about them replacing a product?!?!?!! thats fuckin amazing. I think we should all start taking advantage of that and then we will see how pissed off they actually get when we stop downloading and demand their shit in hard, solid form. they'd be furious

i didnt read any of the posts above and dont intend to, while i was scrolling, though, i saw something about product replacement. this is very true, CDs will be gone (gasp!) its called progression. as for the music industry, i dont buy all their whining and complaining. i look on MTV and see the show cribs, see the houses of brand new artists, producers, and label execs... i do NOT think the industry is hurting. in fact, its the biggest its ever been. but wait, what would that mean? MP3 and piracy are the biggest they have ever been... oooooo could it be the two are actually related? yes i think so. the ability to download music has increased the music industry revenue beyond count...

Drpepper, you are so smart. Seriously. I'm glad someone brought that up. I don't buy all the complaning the music and the film industry do. These people are discustingly welthy. Them make more money on one movie than I will see in 20 years. If they try to argue that the 'little' people are the ones getting the shaft then stop paying these duches (celebs) all of this money for what ever it is they do.

I download loads of music, but luckily you can't get sued in the UK...yet. However i doubt that'd stop me, i download because cd's are a rip off, and i have little money. I'll buy a CD if the band's music is outstanding, otherwise i'll just download it or copy it.
