i live in canada
we have no major cricket leagues, it doesnt have widespread popularity, and no one really likes it
but most of the people still know how to play it, its not that confusing strange or new of a game
its been around forever and its wildly popular some places

yeah, duh it's hugely popular someplace, it's like the biggest sport in india, im not trying to be a close-minded asshole, im just saying i have noooooooo idea how it works and neither do 95% of americans, we have enough trouble trying to remember how baseball works, or whether or not actual "intent of deliberate forward motion" is a factor under consideration when deciding whether or not that last play was an incomplete pass or a fumble

i mean, i get the basics of cricket, but then they start throwing in terms like "limited overs" and "googly-style bowlers" and a bunch of acronyms and i just get lost...

i had a guy from India explain it to me a few weeks ago while watching it on tv in a bar.  I probably stopped him 20 times to say "well that's fucking stupid".  I can't imagine spending 5 days playing a boring-ass game.

that's the fucked up thing, the short kind is called "speed cricket" and has a limited number of overs so that the games "dont last more than a day"...but the fucked up thing is that everyone from hardcore cricket countries HATES speed cricket...they would literally rather stand around and watch teams place serious week-long test matches

cricket with limited overs is designed to makes cricket matches last no longer than, say, a long baseball game...and long baseball games make me want to kill myself

Haha its so funny watching Americans and countries try and understand cricket.

Basically, the 3 forms of cricket are just how long the games are.

20/20, twenty overs each. One innings per team.
One dayers, 50 overs each. One innings per team.
Tests, how ever many overs are needed, but there is a limit of 5 days. 2 innings per team.

Each game is just 20/50/however many overs of 6 balls per team where the teams have to try to score as many runs as possible. Highest score wins.

Bowlers bowl the ball and try to hit the wickets or get the batsmen to hit it to a fielder. Batsmen try to get as many runs as possible before they are out.

If anyone wants more explanation just ask.

An over is 6 balls from the bowler towards the batsman.

A one dayer is a one day long match, where 50 overs per team are bowled.

A test is a match that goes on for up to 5 days, for as long as both teams need to get each other out.

An inning is all the batsmen getting to play once. (until they're out / until the overs are finished). Each time does this, then swaps.

A wicket is behind the batsman (there is also a wicket opposite, at the other end of the strip), and it is what the bowler tries to hit with the ball. A wicket consists of 3 wooden posts (stumps) in the ground, with 2 small pieces of wood (bails) resting on top of it. If the bails come off the batsman is out.

(it's not quite that simple, but that's how it works.)

Let me try:

There are 10 batsmen per team (lets call them batters to make it easier).
There is a bowler (lets call him a pitcher to make it easier)
There are 2 batters on the pitch (lets call it a field) at a time, but thats not really relevant, so just pretend that there is 1 at a time.
The pitcher throws the ball towards the batter to try and hit the wickets behind him. Think of it like baseball except instead of just a plate, there are sticks in the ground the pitcher is trying to hit.
The batter is trying to hit the ball, it can go in any direction. He can chose not to run when he hits it. If he does chose to run, he can run from his wicket to where the pitcher threw from and back. Each time he runs there and back he gets 2 runs.
If the batter hits the ball out of the field without the ball bouncing, he gets 6 runs. If it goes out of the field but it touches the ground 1st he gets 4 runs.

The batting team plays either until every batter is out (either the pitcher hits the wicket, or a ball they hit is caught), and then the teams switch. The team with the most runs at the end wins.
There are also games where instead of going until everyone is out, the pitcher throws a certain amount of pitches, and then the teams switch. Again, the team with the most amount of runs at the end wins.



^That is a very simple explanation. If you dont understand it still you are mentally retarded. Obviously i have left out a lot of details, but none of which are really necessary when it comes to understanding how the game works.

One time my mom crashed her car into a ditch, and it was in the middle of NOWHERE, dirt roads, no one around, no cell cervice. 

My dads an aussie and took it upon himself to teach us how to play cricket, there was magibally some of the bats and a wicket and balls in the back.

Its a game of tactics.

On the fielding side the captain has to pick what type of bowling is needed (e.g spin, medium pace, fast bowling etc), to outwit the batter. He also has to set his players that are out in the field, in positions where he thinks the batter may like to place the ball. The bowler then bowls, varying his bowling to try an fool the batter.

On the batting side the batter has to be patient and pick his shots carefully. If hes got alot of overs, he wont want to get out too quickly.  Also if he knows one of the fielders is worse than the rest he can try and place the ball into space near that fielder.

Meh, theres so much more to know.

cricket isn't that confusing, the only thing that makes it confusing is all the stupid ass words they use for the positions and batters and runs and stuff. I still don't know half the rules yet though, theres way too many

My whole family is english and I still don't know how to play it because even the english think its the most boring thing in the world.  Only Australians, Pakistanis, and Indians like cricket.

More like, baseball is similar to cricket, with half the size of the field... 4 times as many wicket zones or whatever the fuck you want to call them, almost as many players, way shorter games, more racous fans (i've watched a good bit of it on espn360 to try to understand it and it's basically like tennis), you actually know who won after the game is over, Oh, and when we hit a home run... shit hit's the fan.

Basically I hate on cricket the same way as other people hate on US football... Baseball is way more badass. You dont dress up like a hockey goalie to bat... you take it like a man and fuckin kill it.

oh, and in baseball, you dont run up and throw the ball like a monkey to pitch, or 'BOWL' as cricketeers call it.

I know I'm  hating hardcore, but one last thing - cricket is a retarded name for a sport.
