Haha I find it hilarious that people are shocked by this. Let's not make this political but be real here. America really doesn't have such a good world image anymore. It could change, but I really don't see a bunch of foreigners trying their best to come here for the games. It's too soon.
Stoked on Rio though. I would have liked it to be Madrid since I'll probably be in Europe around that time but if I can, I'd like to go to Brazil.
I don't know, maybe I'm getting skewed answers. But I really enjoy talking to all the foreign people on my campus and the majority of them acknowledge that America isn't looked upon very fondly in the rest of the world. They're here for the education and then bookin it out.
I love all the foreigners I work with at school but GOD this shit pisses me off, most of them openly talk about how they send ALL of their money they've gotten in the US to offshore bank accounts with their families, do not put any money back into the local economy and to top it off they always get their schooling for free here.
Have you ever asked a foreigner why they go to school in America? A lot of them go here simply for the experience. If you go back to your home country with a degree from a U.S. university you have a much higher chance of getting a job. The world is becoming more western and most of the world acknowledges this. Companies in other countries jerk off to American degrees. It doesn't necessarily mean we have better academics, it could just mean we have a different experience to offer.
Seems like Rio got it because it'll be the first south american city to host, plus it offered one hell of a budget. Quite frankly, Rio and Madrid were the coolest choices, and I'll be stoked to see it in brazil. Chicago is such a boring big city. Rio and Madrid, not so much.
They see it's from the U.S. man, jeez my logic isn't hard to follow. I go to Purdue University. Most of the Asians are in the business school here, they have better business schools over in Asia, especially Japan, yet they still come here. They do it because we are undoubtedly the most "western" country in the entire world. They don't really learn anything they couldn't over in their home country, it's just location. It's a resume thing, not an education thing.
i think it really has a lot more to do with brazil hosting the 2014 world cup, if anything the worlds take on america is on the up. world leaders and people who really have a say in the vote on the location, are so stoked with obama
In most polls you can possibly find on world rankings, you'll find that universities and colleges in the US are predominant in those rankings. US higher education can be super excellent, and that is why many people go to schools in the US, aside from just the notion of having a degree from a western institution.
well, Spain already had Olympics in 1992 Barcelona, the US had Atlanta 96 and SLC 02...
they made a good choice picking Rio, probably it'll be hella fun down there
exactly, but it really depends on the degree. Business, yeah, you come to the US, animal science -> africa. Anthropology, any second world country. If you are an american regardless of where you go in the world, it helps you. Same goes for other countries, but tons of foreigners also go to japan and mexico (mexico city has a great uni) canada, australia... So don't think they are just coming here. And you also need to look a the fact that the US has a lot more schools than any other country. If you looked at all the european countries as one entity, you would see that we probably have as many students going there as they have coming here. (If there are more, it is because studying abroad is a lot more common place in other nations than here).
Hahah and they are pretty much ALL Ivy-League schools. No shit those are the best, but explain why hella people still come over to go to the average state school please.
I'm pretty sure this is a big reason why they didn't get the bid. There are plenty of tourists that would happily pay big money to go watch the Olympics in the US year after year. But this is an international competition and where it gets hosted needs to represent that.
It was the right choice. Brazil is a country teetering on becoming a developed nation. Most cities that host the Olympics have huge economic benefits for years to come, it will do Rio good.
Obama, Michelle, and Oprah failed. HAHAHAHHAHAHAHHA!!!!!!! Serves him right for jetting off to Copenhagen. He obviously felt this was the most important issue or else he wouldn't have gone. Meanwhile, he hasn't talked to the commanding General in Afganistan in almost 3 months. Ya, the olympics are realllly important.
Yeah, but then I would have to drop out of school and the parentals would get pissed so there is another problem PLUS I turn 21 in like 20 days so why not just wait?
